Budhaditya Yoga: Sun and Mercury Together

Lesson 7 of AstroWord's free Vedic astrology course · about 5 minutes · Parashari system, Lahiri ayanamsa

By AstroWord · Updated 5 November 2026 · Based on Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra

Budhaditya yoga forms when the Sun (Aditya) and Mercury (Budha) are in the same sign of the birth chart. It is linked with intelligence, learning, clear speech, analytical skill and respect from authority. Because Mercury never moves more than about 28 degrees from the Sun, the two share a sign in a large share of charts, so the yoga's real strength depends on Mercury not being too close to the Sun (combust), on the sign and on the house where it forms. The Sun also forms its own yogas: Vesi, Vasi and Ubhayachari.

Budha is Mercury, Aditya is the Sun. When they sit together, they make the yoga of the sharp, bright mind.

Lesson notes

  • Budhaditya yoga forms when the Sun and Mercury are in the same sign. It is linked with intelligence, learning, good speech and respect.
  • Mercury never strays more than about 28° from the Sun, so the two are together in a large share of charts. Budhaditya is very common.
  • When Mercury is very close to the Sun it becomes combust (asta) and weaker. Budhaditya is strongest when Mercury is a little away from the Sun - and in a good house.
  • The house matters: Budhaditya in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 9th, 10th or 11th is a classic sign of a sharp mind and success in study, writing or business.
  • The Sun has its own yogas too: a planet (not the Moon) in the 2nd from the Sun is Vesi, in the 12th is Vasi, on both sides is Ubhayachari. They show steady effort and good standing.

Practice questions and answers

Which two grahas form Budhaditya yoga?
Answer: Sun and Mercury. Budha + Aditya.
True or false: Mercury can be on the opposite side of the zodiac from the Sun.
Answer: False. Mercury always stays within about 28° of the Sun.
When is Budhaditya yoga strongest?
Answer: When Mercury is not too close to the Sun. Too close = combust Mercury.
Budhaditya in which house is a classic sign of career success?
Answer: 10th. The 10th = career.
A planet in the 2nd from the Sun forms which yoga?
Answer: Vesi. Vesi = 2nd from the Sun; Vasi = 12th from the Sun.

Why the Sun and Mercury?

The Sun is the soul, authority, father and the light of awareness. Mercury is intellect, speech, logic, trade and learning. Together they describe a mind that is both bright (Sun) and sharp (Mercury): someone who learns quickly, speaks with confidence and is noticed by people in authority. Mercury is also the Sun's friend from Mercury's side, which helps the combination.

Why Budhaditya is so common

Seen from the Earth, Mercury always stays close to the Sun, never more than about 28 degrees away. That means Mercury is either in the same sign as the Sun or in the sign just before or after it. In a large share of charts, Mercury and the Sun share a sign. So simply "having" Budhaditya yoga is not unusual; the question is how strong it is.

Combustion: the key test

When Mercury is very close to the Sun, it becomes combust (asta): its own significations are overpowered by the Sun's glare. Commonly used combustion distances are about 14 degrees for direct Mercury and 12 degrees for retrograde Mercury.

Distance between Sun and MercuryEffect on Budhaditya
Within about 3 to 4 degreesDeeply combust; intellect may serve ego, or work behind the scenes
About 4 to 12 degreesCombust but workable; results are mixed
More than about 12 to 14 degreesNot combust; the strongest Budhaditya

Many astrologers are lenient with Mercury's combustion because it happens so often. Some even consider a mildly combust Mercury a sign of a mind that works closely with authority.

The Sun's own yogas: Vesi, Vasi and Ubhayachari

Just as the Moon has yogas formed by its neighbours, so does the Sun. The Moon, Rahu and Ketu are excluded.

YogaFormationResults
VesiA planet in the 2nd from the SunTruthful, balanced, steady effort; varies with the planet
VasiA planet in the 12th from the SunSkilful, prosperous, liked by authorities
UbhayachariPlanets in both the 2nd and 12th from the SunEloquent, wealthy, respected, like a king among peers

Mercury and Venus are very often in the 2nd or 12th from the Sun, so these yogas are common too. Benefics (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury) give the most pleasant versions.

Budhaditya and career

Budhaditya is often seen in the charts of people who succeed through their minds: civil servants, writers, analysts, accountants, lawyers, teachers, programmers and consultants. The 10th house from the Lagna, and the D10 chart, show whether it powers the career. Check your D10 with the D10 chart calculator or explore career timing with the job timing calculator.

Timing Budhaditya

The yoga shows most in the dashas of the Sun (6 years) and Mercury (17 years), and in Sun-Mercury or Mercury-Sun sub-periods. Mercury's long mahadasha is often the main window for education and intellectual careers.

Worked example

Virgo Lagna, Sun at 10° Virgo, Mercury at 25° Virgo, in the 1st house.

  • Same sign: Budhaditya yoga.
  • Distance: 15 degrees, so Mercury is not combust.
  • Mercury in Virgo: own sign and exaltation, also the Lagna lord. Bhadra yoga forms too (Mercury exalted in a kendra).

Result: an exceptionally strong Budhaditya. A brilliant, analytical, articulate person, likely successful in intellectual or commercial work, especially in Mercury's mahadasha.

Key takeaways

  • Budhaditya = the Sun and Mercury in the same sign.
  • It is common; strength depends on combustion, sign, house and aspects.
  • Mercury more than about 12 to 14 degrees from the Sun gives the strongest version.
  • Vesi, Vasi and Ubhayachari are the Sun's own neighbour yogas.

The three positions of Mercury

Because Mercury stays close to the Sun, it is always in one of three positions relative to it:

Mercury's positionResult
In the same sign as the SunBudhaditya yoga
In the sign before the Sun (12th from the Sun)Vasi yoga by Mercury
In the sign after the Sun (2nd from the Sun)Vesi yoga by Mercury

So Mercury always forms either Budhaditya, Vesi or Vasi in every chart. The difference lies in the strength, sign and house.

Budhaditya by sign

SignStrength of Budhaditya
AriesStrong: Sun exalted, bold intelligence
LeoStrong: Sun in own sign, confident speaker
Gemini, VirgoStrong: Mercury in own sign (Virgo also exalted)
Taurus, Capricorn, AquariusGood: practical, organised minds
Sagittarius, Cancer, ScorpioModerate: intelligence coloured by beliefs or emotions
LibraWeaker: Sun debilitated
PiscesWeaker: Mercury debilitated, unless cancelled

Nipuna yoga

Some texts call the Sun-Mercury combination Nipuna yoga, from nipuna meaning skilful or expert. It describes the same skill: the ability to master a subject and explain it well.

Practice

  1. Find the signs and degrees of your Sun and Mercury.
  2. Are they in the same sign? If yes, you have Budhaditya yoga.
  3. Subtract the degrees to see how close they are; more than about 12 to 14 degrees means Mercury is not combust.
  4. Note the house from your Lagna and check your Mercury and Sun dasha dates with the dasha calculator.

Budhaditya in the Navamsa and D10

A Budhaditya that is repeated in the D9 (the Sun and Mercury again in the same sign) is considered especially reliable. For careers, astrologers also look at the Sun and Mercury in the D10: if Mercury is strong there and linked with the 10th house of the D10, intellectual careers flourish. You can view both with the D9 chart calculator and the D10 chart calculator.

Budhaditya and education

Because Mercury rules learning and the Sun gives confidence and recognition, Budhaditya is closely watched for education. A Budhaditya involving the 4th house (formal education), the 5th house (intelligence and exams) or the 9th house (higher studies) is a classic sign of academic success, particularly during Mercury's mahadasha or the Sun-Mercury sub-periods.

A quick way to read your Budhaditya

Ask three questions. First, how far apart are the Sun and Mercury? More than about 12 to 14 degrees is ideal. Second, which sign are they in? Aries, Leo, Gemini and Virgo are the strongest. Third, which house do they occupy from the Lagna? The 1st, 4th, 5th, 9th, 10th and 11th show the results most clearly. Three good answers mean a powerful Budhaditya; one or two mean a helpful but ordinary one.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Treating Budhaditya as rare. The Sun and Mercury share a sign in a large share of charts.
  • Ignoring combustion. A deeply combust Mercury weakens the yoga.
  • Ignoring the house. Budhaditya in the 10th and in the 8th give very different lives.
  • Counting the Moon for Vesi or Vasi. The Moon is excluded from the Sun's yogas.

Frequently asked questions

What is Budhaditya yoga?

A combination of the Sun and Mercury in the same sign, promising intelligence, learning, eloquence and recognition.

Is Budhaditya yoga good or bad?

Generally good. It is strongest when Mercury is not combust and the yoga falls in a kendra, trikona or the 11th house.

Is Budhaditya yoga common?

Yes. Mercury always stays within about 28 degrees of the Sun, so the two share a sign in a large share of charts.

Does combust Mercury cancel Budhaditya yoga?

It weakens it, especially when Mercury is within a few degrees of the Sun, but does not always cancel it. Many astrologers treat mild combustion leniently.

Which house is best for Budhaditya yoga?

The 1st, 4th, 5th, 9th, 10th and 11th houses are considered best, with the 10th especially good for career.

What is Vesi yoga?

A planet other than the Moon in the 2nd sign from the Sun, showing steady effort, truthfulness and a balanced nature.

What is Ubhayachari yoga?

Planets other than the Moon on both sides of the Sun, in the 2nd and 12th signs from it, giving eloquence, wealth and respect.

Does Budhaditya yoga help in exams?

It is traditionally linked with intelligence and good results in study, especially when it falls in the 4th, 5th or 9th house and Mercury is not deeply combust.

Who is Budha and who is Aditya?

Budha is the Sanskrit name for Mercury, the planet of intellect and speech. Aditya is a name of the Sun, the son of Aditi.

Is Budhaditya yoga good for a career in IT or writing?

Yes. Mercury rules communication, analysis and technology, and the Sun brings recognition, so a strong Budhaditya linked with the 10th house is a classic signature of success in IT, writing, accounting and consulting.
