The Moon is your mind. The planets on either side of it say a lot about how you think and feel.
Lesson notes
- Look at the signs right next to your Moon - the 2nd and the 12th from it. Planets there form the Moon yogas. The Sun, Rahu and Ketu don't count for these.
- Sunapha - a planet in the 2nd from the Moon: self-made wealth and skill Anapha - a planet in the 12th from the Moon: charm and good health Durudhara - planets on both sides: comfort and generosity
- Kemadruma yoga forms when there are no planets in the 2nd and 12th from the Moon. The mind feels alone, and life can bring ups and downs.
- Kemadruma is often cancelled: a planet in a kendra from the Moon or the Lagna, or Jupiter aspecting the Moon, breaks it. So don't panic if you see it!
- One more: Chandra-Mangala yoga - the Moon and Mars together - brings drive to earn money, often through business.
Practice questions and answers
- Match the Moon yoga
- Answer: Sunapha = Planet 2nd from Moon; Anapha = Planet 12th from Moon; Durudhara = Planets on both sides; Kemadruma = No planets on either side. Kemadruma is the empty-neighbour yoga.
- The Moon is in Gemini and Venus is in Cancer. Which yoga?
- Answer: Sunapha. Cancer is the 2nd from Gemini.
- True or false: The Sun next to the Moon stops Kemadruma yoga.
- Answer: False. The Sun, Rahu and Ketu don't count - only Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn.
- Which of these cancels Kemadruma yoga?
- Answer: A planet in a kendra from the Moon. Kendra support lifts the lonely Moon.
- Chandra-Mangala yoga is the Moon with which planet?
- Answer: Mars. Mangal = Mars.
Why the Moon's neighbours matter
The Moon is the mind, emotions and daily experience. Classical texts say the Moon, like a person, needs company: planets beside it support and nourish the mind, while a Moon with no neighbours feels isolated. That is the idea behind the three supportive Moon yogas and the difficult Kemadruma.
The Sun is excluded because the Moon near the Sun is dark (new Moon), and Rahu and Ketu are excluded because they are shadow points. Only Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn count.
The four Moon-neighbour yogas
| Yoga | Formation | Classical results |
|---|---|---|
| Sunapha | A planet in the 2nd from the Moon | Self-made wealth, intelligence, good reputation |
| Anapha | A planet in the 12th from the Moon | Charm, good health, dignity, a pleasant personality |
| Durudhara | Planets in both the 2nd and 12th from the Moon | Comfort, wealth, generosity, vehicles, good helpers |
| Kemadruma | No planet in the 2nd or 12th from the Moon | Isolation, financial ups and downs, emotional strain |
Which planet forms the yoga matters
| Planet in the 2nd or 12th from the Moon | Flavour |
|---|---|
| Mars | Energy, courage, property, sometimes harsh speech |
| Mercury | Learning, communication, trade, skill with words |
| Jupiter | Wisdom, ethics, wealth, respect |
| Venus | Beauty, comfort, art, pleasant relationships |
| Saturn | Hard work, endurance, steady but slow gains |
Benefics (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury) give the most pleasant versions; Mars and Saturn give results through effort.
Kemadruma yoga
Kemadruma is the most discussed Moon yoga because it is considered difficult. Classical descriptions include loneliness, worry, financial instability and lack of support. Modern astrologers stress that Kemadruma is common and often cancelled.
Common cancellations of Kemadruma
| Cancellation (Kemadruma bhanga) | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| A planet in a kendra from the Moon | The mind gets support from the angles |
| A planet in a kendra from the Lagna | The chart as a whole is supported |
| Jupiter aspecting the Moon | The great benefic protects the mind |
| The Moon in a kendra, bright and strong | A strong Moon carries itself |
| The Moon aspected by many planets | Company comes through aspects |
If any of these apply, many astrologers treat Kemadruma as cancelled or much weakened.
Other important Moon yogas
| Yoga | Formation | Results |
|---|---|---|
| Chandra-Mangala | Moon and Mars together (or in mutual aspect) | Drive to earn, business sense; can bring emotional intensity |
| Adhi yoga | Benefics (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury) in the 6th, 7th and 8th from the Moon | Leadership, prosperity, a long and comfortable life |
| Shakata yoga | Jupiter in the 6th, 8th or 12th from the Moon | Ups and downs of fortune, like a cart wheel; cancelled if Jupiter is in a kendra from the Lagna |
| Grahan yoga | Moon with Rahu or Ketu | Emotional turbulence, unusual thinking; needs care |
| Amavasya birth | Moon very close to the Sun | A weak Moon; the mind turns inward |
The Moon's strength (paksha bala)
The Moon's brightness changes all Moon yogas. A waxing Moon (shukla paksha), especially near full, is considered a benefic and gives strong yogas; a waning Moon near the new Moon (krishna paksha) is weak. When judging any Moon yoga, check how many days the birth was from the full or new Moon. The birth tithi calculator shows your lunar day.
Worked example
Moon in Virgo. Venus in Libra (2nd from the Moon). Saturn in Leo (12th from the Moon).
- Planets on both sides of the Moon: Durudhara yoga.
- Venus in its own sign in the 2nd: comfort, a pleasant voice and income from art or design.
- Saturn in the 12th: discipline, perhaps work abroad or in quiet settings.
Result: a supported mind with comfort through steady effort.
Practice
- Find your Moon sign with the Moon sign calculator.
- Note the sign before and the sign after it.
- List Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn in those signs.
- Name your Moon yoga. If it is Kemadruma, check the cancellation table.
Key takeaways
- Sunapha (2nd from the Moon), Anapha (12th) and Durudhara (both) are supportive Moon yogas.
- Kemadruma (both empty) is difficult but very often cancelled.
- The Sun, Rahu and Ketu do not count for these yogas.
- The Moon's brightness and dignity change every Moon yoga.
The Moon's own condition
Before judging any Moon yoga, check the Moon itself:
| Factor | Strong Moon | Weak Moon |
|---|---|---|
| Sign | Taurus (exalted), Cancer (own) | Scorpio (debilitated) |
| Phase | Waxing, near full Moon | Waning, near new Moon |
| House | Kendras and trikonas | 6th, 8th or 12th |
| Company | Jupiter, Venus, Mercury | Rahu, Ketu, Saturn |
| Aspect | Jupiter's aspect | Mars or Saturn's aspect alone |
A strong Moon makes Sunapha, Anapha and Durudhara more generous and weakens Kemadruma further.
Adhi yoga in detail
Adhi yoga forms when natural benefics (Jupiter, Venus and Mercury) occupy the 6th, 7th and 8th houses from the Moon, all three or some of them. Phaladeepika says the person becomes a leader, minister or commander depending on how many benefics are involved, and lives a long, comfortable life with defeated enemies. With all three benefics it is very strong; with one or two, it is milder.
A worked Kemadruma example
Moon in Leo. No planets in Cancer (12th from the Moon) or Virgo (2nd from the Moon). The Sun is in Virgo.
- The Sun does not count, so Kemadruma forms.
- Jupiter is in Scorpio, the 4th from the Moon: a planet in a kendra from the Moon. Kemadruma is cancelled.
- Jupiter in Scorpio also aspects Pisces, Taurus and Cancer, not the Moon, but the kendra position is enough.
Result: a cancelled Kemadruma. The person may value independence and solitude, but is not left without support.
Moon yogas and mental well-being
Astrologers often read Moon yogas as a picture of emotional resources: who and what supports the mind. A supported Moon suggests a person who finds help easily; a lonely Moon suggests someone who must build their own support. Either way, these are tendencies that habits, relationships and care can strengthen.
Quick reference: Moon yogas from your Moon sign

| Taurus | Aries and Gemini |
| Gemini | Taurus and Cancer |
| Cancer | Gemini and Leo |
| Leo | Cancer and Virgo |
| Virgo | Leo and Libra |

| Scorpio | Libra and Sagittarius |
| Sagittarius | Scorpio and Capricorn |
| Capricorn | Sagittarius and Aquarius |
| Aquarius | Capricorn and Pisces |
| Pisces | Aquarius and Aries |
Why the Moon yogas still matter today
Modern astrologers often use the Moon yogas as a quick read of emotional support systems. A Moon flanked by Jupiter or Venus usually describes someone who receives help, affection and resources from others. A Moon flanked by Saturn suggests someone who carries responsibility early and becomes self-reliant. A Moon with Mars nearby points to drive and enterprise. Kemadruma, when not cancelled, often describes independence that has to be built consciously, through friendships, routines and a sense of purpose.
Common beginner mistakes
- Counting the Sun. It does not break or form these yogas.
- Fearing Kemadruma without checking cancellations. Most charts with it have some cancellation.
- Ignoring the Moon's phase. A full Moon and a new Moon behave very differently.
- Forgetting Chandra-Mangala. It is one of the most practical wealth signatures.
Frequently asked questions
What is Kemadruma yoga?
A Moon yoga that forms when no planet (other than the Sun, Rahu or Ketu) is in the 2nd or 12th sign from the Moon. It is linked with isolation and instability but is often cancelled.
How is Kemadruma yoga cancelled?
Commonly by a planet in a kendra from the Moon or the Lagna, by Jupiter aspecting the Moon, or by a strong, bright Moon in a kendra.
What is Sunapha yoga?
A planet other than the Sun in the 2nd sign from the Moon, giving self-made wealth, intelligence and a good name.
What is Durudhara yoga?
Planets in both the 2nd and 12th signs from the Moon, giving comfort, wealth, generosity and support from others.
What is Chandra-Mangala yoga?
The Moon and Mars together, a classic sign of a drive to earn money, often through business or enterprise.
What is Anapha yoga?
A planet other than the Sun in the 12th sign from the Moon, giving charm, good health, dignity and a pleasant personality.
What is Adhi yoga?
Benefics (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury) in the 6th, 7th and 8th houses from the Moon, promising leadership, comfort and a long life.
Does Rahu next to the Moon break Kemadruma?
No. Rahu, Ketu and the Sun do not count when judging Kemadruma; only Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn do.
Is Kemadruma yoga common?
It is fairly common, because it only needs the two signs next to the Moon to be empty of Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn. It is also very often cancelled.
What is Shakata yoga?
Jupiter in the 6th, 8th or 12th sign from the Moon, traditionally linked with fluctuating fortunes. It is cancelled when Jupiter is in a kendra from the Lagna.
Which Moon yoga is the best?
Durudhara, with planets on both sides of the Moon, is usually considered the most supportive, especially when the planets are benefics.
Do Moon yogas need an exact birth time?
Usually not. They depend on the signs of the Moon and planets, which stay the same for most of a day, although a Moon close to a sign boundary needs an accurate time.
