Some yogas turn bad into good. These are the rags-to-riches combinations of astrology.
Lesson notes
- Viparita means 'reversed'. Viparita Raja yoga forms when the lord of a dusthana (6, 8 or 12) sits in a dusthana. Trouble cancels trouble, and rise follows a hard time.
- The three Viparita yogas: Harsha - 6th lord in 6, 8 or 12 Sarala - 8th lord in 6, 8 or 12 Vimala - 12th lord in 6, 8 or 12
- Neecha means debilitated, bhanga means cancelled. Neecha Bhanga Raja yoga forms when a debilitated planet's weakness is cancelled - and it can rise to give great results.
- Main ways debilitation is cancelled: 1. The lord of the sign it sits in is in a kendra from the Lagna or Moon 2. The planet that is exalted in that sign is in a kendra from the Lagna or Moon 3. The planet is exalted in the Navamsa (D9)
- Not all yogas are good. Watch for doshas too: Kaal Sarp (all planets between Rahu and Ketu), Guru Chandal (Jupiter with Rahu) and Grahan yoga (Sun or Moon with Rahu or Ketu). They show tests, not doom.
Practice questions and answers
- Viparita Raja yoga forms when a dusthana lord sits in...?
- Answer: A dusthana (6, 8 or 12). 6th, 8th or 12th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th.
- Match the Viparita yoga
- Answer: Harsha = 6th lord; Sarala = 8th lord; Vimala = 12th lord. Harsha, Sarala, Vimala - for the 6th, 8th and 12th lords.
- Mars is debilitated in Cancer. Cancer is ruled by the Moon. The Moon sits in a kendra from the Lagna. What happens?
- Answer: Neecha Bhanga - the debilitation is cancelled. The sign lord (Moon) in a kendra lifts debilitated Mars.
- True or false: A debilitated planet can never give good results.
- Answer: False. With Neecha Bhanga, it can give some of the best results in the chart - often after early struggle.
- Kaal Sarp dosha forms when...?
- Answer: All planets are between Rahu and Ketu. All seven planets hemmed in on one side of the Rahu-Ketu axis.
Viparita Raja yoga: when bad cancels bad
The 6th (enemies, debt, illness), 8th (sudden change, obstacles) and 12th (loss, expense) are the difficult houses. When the lord of one of these sits in another dusthana, or in its own, the negative houses are said to damage each other, leaving the person to benefit. Classical texts describe sudden rise, victory over enemies and gain through others' losses.
| Yoga | Formation | Classical results |
|---|---|---|
| Harsha | 6th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th | Victory over enemies, good health, happiness, fame |
| Sarala | 8th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th | Long life, fearlessness, learning, prosperity |
| Vimala | 12th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th | Thrift, independence, good conduct, contentment |
Conditions that make Viparita yoga work
- The dusthana lord should not be joined with or aspected by the Lagna lord or other benefic house lords, which can spoil the "cancellation".
- The Lagna lord should be reasonably strong, so the person survives the struggle to enjoy the rise.
- Results often come in the dasha of the dusthana lord, sometimes suddenly.
Dusthana lords for each Lagna
| Lagna | 6th lord | 8th lord | 12th lord |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mercury | Mars | Jupiter |
| Taurus | Venus | Jupiter | Mars |
| Gemini | Mars | Saturn | Venus |
| Cancer | Jupiter | Saturn | Mercury |
| Leo | Saturn | Jupiter | Moon |
| Virgo | Saturn | Mars | Sun |
| Libra | Jupiter | Venus | Mercury |
| Scorpio | Mars | Mercury | Venus |
| Sagittarius | Venus | Moon | Mars |
| Capricorn | Mercury | Sun | Jupiter |
| Aquarius | Moon | Mercury | Saturn |
| Pisces | Sun | Venus | Saturn |
Neecha Bhanga Raja yoga: cancelled debilitation
A debilitated (neecha) planet is in the sign where it is weakest (Lesson 14). But classical texts list conditions that cancel the debilitation (neecha bhanga) and can even turn it into a Raja yoga.
| Debilitated planet | Debilitation sign | Sign lord | Planet exalted in that sign |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Libra | Venus | Saturn |
| Moon | Scorpio | Mars | None |
| Mars | Cancer | Moon | Jupiter |
| Mercury | Pisces | Jupiter | Venus |
| Jupiter | Capricorn | Saturn | Mars |
| Venus | Virgo | Mercury | Mercury |
| Saturn | Aries | Mars | Sun |
The main cancellation rules
- The lord of the debilitation sign is in a kendra (1, 4, 7, 10) from the Lagna or the Moon.
- The planet exalted in that sign is in a kendra from the Lagna or the Moon.
- The debilitated planet is aspected by its sign lord.
- The debilitated planet is exalted in the Navamsa (D9).
- The sign lord and the exaltation lord are in kendras from each other.
Different texts emphasise different rules. When one or more apply clearly, astrologers expect the planet to rise: early weakness or struggle in its significations, followed by strong results, often greater than an ordinary well-placed planet would give. Read more in the Neecha Bhanga Raja yoga guide.
Difficult yogas and doshas to know
Not every yoga is beneficial. These are the most searched difficult combinations:
| Dosha or yoga | Formation | Common view |
|---|---|---|
| Kaal Sarp dosha | All seven planets between Rahu and Ketu on one side of the axis | Struggle followed by achievement; strongly debated. Check with the Kaal Sarp calculator |
| Manglik dosha | Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house | Relevant for marriage matching. Check with the Manglik calculator |
| Guru Chandal yoga | Jupiter with Rahu | Unconventional beliefs, questioning tradition; can bring sudden gains or misjudgement |
| Grahan yoga | Sun or Moon with Rahu or Ketu | Eclipse-like effect on the soul (Sun) or mind (Moon) |
| Shakata yoga | Jupiter in the 6th, 8th or 12th from the Moon | Fluctuating fortunes |
| Kemadruma yoga | No planets either side of the Moon | Isolation; often cancelled (Lesson 38) |
| Pitra dosha | Afflictions to the Sun, 9th house or 9th lord | Ancestral karma. See the Pitra dosha calculator |
Treat these as areas that need awareness, not as curses. Most have cancellations, and many successful people have them.
Reading all yogas together
- List the yogas you find in the chart: Raja, Dhana, Mahapurusha, Gajakesari, Moon, Sun, Viparita, Neecha Bhanga and doshas.
- Grade each one by the strength of its planets, houses and D9.
- Check which dashas run in your life and which yogas they activate.
- Weigh good against difficult: a strong Raja yoga often outweighs a mild dosha.
- Confirm with transits (Unit 4) for timing.
Worked example
Gemini Lagna. Mars (6th and 11th lord) in Scorpio in the 6th house. Saturn (8th and 9th lord) in Capricorn in the 8th house. Jupiter debilitated in Capricorn in the 8th with Saturn.
- Harsha yoga: Mars, the 6th lord, in the 6th (its own sign). Victory over competitors, good health.
- Sarala yoga: Saturn, the 8th lord, in the 8th (its own sign). Longevity and resilience.
- Neecha Bhanga check: Jupiter is debilitated in Capricorn. Saturn, the lord of Capricorn, sits with Jupiter, but in the 8th, not a kendra from the Lagna. Mars, which is exalted in Capricorn, is in the 6th, also not a kendra. So from the Lagna the two main rules do not apply. The next step is to count from the Moon and to check Jupiter in the D9, where exaltation would cancel the debilitation.
Result: a chart that rises through challenges, competition and research, with results often coming after age 30.
Key takeaways
- Viparita Raja yoga: a 6th, 8th or 12th lord in a dusthana (Harsha, Sarala, Vimala).
- Neecha Bhanga Raja yoga: a debilitated planet whose weakness is cancelled.
- Both bring rise after difficulty.
- Doshas such as Kaal Sarp, Manglik and Guru Chandal are tests to understand, not curses.
Viparita yogas in real life
People with strong Viparita yogas often describe lives where problems became stepping stones: an illness that led to a new career, a rival's failure that opened a position, a loss that forced a better decision. The 6th lord (Harsha) often shows victory over competitors and illness; the 8th lord (Sarala) resilience in crises and gains through research or inheritance; the 12th lord (Vimala) a thrifty, independent nature and gains through foreign links or spiritual work.
Neecha Bhanga in the dasha
A debilitated planet with Neecha Bhanga tends to give its results in two phases during its dasha: an early phase of difficulty in its significations, followed by a strong rise. For example, a cancelled debilitated Sun may begin with struggles with authority or confidence and end with a position of leadership.
Practice: find your dusthana lords
- Using the table above, write your 6th, 8th and 12th lords.
- Find which house each one sits in.
- If any is in the 6th, 8th or 12th, you have the matching Viparita yoga (Harsha, Sarala or Vimala).
- Check that the Lagna lord is reasonably strong.
- Note the dasha dates of those lords.
Common beginner mistakes
- Calling every dusthana lord in a dusthana a Raja yoga. It needs the Lagna lord to be strong and no spoiling links.
- Applying only one Neecha Bhanga rule. Check several and the D9.
- Expecting instant results. These yogas usually work after struggle.
- Fearing doshas without checking cancellations. Many are weakened or cancelled.
Frequently asked questions
What is Viparita Raja yoga?
A yoga in which the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th house is placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, so that difficulties cancel each other and the person rises after hardship.
What are Harsha, Sarala and Vimala yogas?
The three Viparita Raja yogas: Harsha is the 6th lord in a dusthana, Sarala the 8th lord in a dusthana, and Vimala the 12th lord in a dusthana.
What is Neecha Bhanga Raja yoga?
A yoga in which a debilitated planet's weakness is cancelled, for example because the lord of its sign or the planet exalted there is in a kendra from the Lagna or Moon. It often brings success after early struggle.
Is a debilitated planet always bad?
No. With Neecha Bhanga, a debilitated planet can give some of the best results in the chart, often after a period of difficulty.
Is Kaal Sarp dosha real?
It is a later addition to astrology and not mentioned in Parashara's classical texts. Many astrologers use it as a sign of a life with intense struggles and achievements; others give it little weight.
What is Guru Chandal yoga?
Jupiter conjunct Rahu. It can bring unconventional beliefs, questioning of tradition and sudden opportunities, but also errors of judgement if Jupiter is weak. Its effects depend heavily on the house and sign.
Which Viparita yoga is the best?
Each helps in its own way. Harsha (6th lord) is valued for victory and health, Sarala (8th lord) for resilience and longevity, and Vimala (12th lord) for contentment and good conduct.
Does Neecha Bhanga always give a Raja yoga?
Not always. Cancellation removes the weakness; it becomes a full Raja yoga when the planet also rules good houses and gains strength from the cancelling factors.
At what age does Neecha Bhanga Raja yoga work?
Usually during the dasha of the debilitated planet, and often after an early period of struggle. Many people notice the rise in their thirties or later.
Is Viparita Raja yoga common?
Fairly common, because any of three lords in any of three houses can form it. Its strength depends on the Lagna lord and on avoiding links with benefic house lords.
