Debilitated Planets (Neecha) in Vedic Astrology

Lesson 6 of AstroWord's free Vedic astrology course · about 5 minutes · Parashari system, Lahiri ayanamsa

By AstroWord · Updated 5 November 2026 · Based on Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra

Debilitation (neecha) is the sign where a planet is at its weakest, always the sign directly opposite its exaltation: the Sun is debilitated in Libra, the Moon in Scorpio, Mars in Cancer, Mercury in Pisces, Jupiter in Capricorn, Venus in Virgo and Saturn in Aries. A debilitated planet struggles to give its natural results, like a fish out of water, but debilitation is often cancelled (neecha bhanga), and a cancelled debilitation can even produce a powerful Raja Yoga.

The sign straight opposite a graha's exaltation is where it is weakest. This is called debilitation (neecha).

Lesson notes

  • Rule: debilitation is always the sign opposite exaltation. Example: the Moon is exalted in Taurus, so it is debilitated in Scorpio.
  • All debilitation signs: Sun - Libra Moon - Scorpio Mars - Cancer Mercury - Pisces Jupiter - Capricorn Venus - Virgo Saturn - Aries
  • Spot the mirror: Saturn is exalted in Libra and debilitated in Aries. The Sun is the exact reverse - exalted in Aries, debilitated in Libra.
  • A debilitated graha struggles to give its results, like a fish out of water. Other factors in the chart can repair it - you'll learn those later.

Practice questions and answers

The Sun is exalted in Aries. Where is it debilitated?
Answer: Libra. Libra is the sign opposite Aries.
Match each graha to its debilitation sign
Answer: Mars = Cancer; Jupiter = Capricorn; Venus = Virgo; Saturn = Aries. Each one is opposite its exaltation sign.
Where is Mercury debilitated?
Answer: Pisces. Mercury is exalted in Virgo, so it is debilitated in Pisces.
True or false: Saturn is debilitated in Aries.
Answer: True. And the Sun is exalted there.
Jupiter sits in Capricorn. What is its condition?
Answer: Debilitated. Jupiter is debilitated in Capricorn.
Mars sits in Capricorn. What is its condition?
Answer: Exalted. Same sign, opposite result - Mars is exalted in Capricorn.

What does debilitated mean?

Debilitation (neecha, meaning low) is the opposite of exaltation. In its debilitation sign a planet's nature is blocked or distorted. The things it signifies come with more struggle, delay or confusion, or are expressed in an immature way.

The rule is simple: the debilitation sign is always the 7th sign from the exaltation sign, exactly opposite on the zodiac. The deepest debilitation degree is also exactly opposite the deepest exaltation degree.

Notice the mirrors: the Sun and Saturn swap Aries and Libra (each is exalted where the other is debilitated), and Jupiter and Mars swap Cancer and Capricorn.

Why are planets weak in these signs?

  • Sun in Libra: the king in a sign of partnership and compromise; self-confidence depends on others.
  • Moon in Scorpio: the gentle mind in an intense, secretive water sign; deep feelings, emotional storms.
  • Mars in Cancer: the warrior in a soft, emotional water sign; anger turns inward or into moodiness.
  • Mercury in Pisces: logic in a sign of imagination and feeling; intuition replaces analysis.
  • Jupiter in Capricorn: wisdom in a sign of practical ambition; faith becomes pragmatic, generosity limited.
  • Venus in Virgo: love in a sign of criticism and perfectionism; high standards in relationships.
  • Saturn in Aries: patience in a sign of haste; discipline clashes with impulsiveness.

These are tendencies, and many debilitated planets show their gifts in unusual forms. Mercury in Pisces, for example, often gives highly intuitive and creative thinkers.

What does a debilitated planet do?

Debilitated planetTypical challenges
Sun in LibraLow self-confidence, need for approval, strain with father or authority
Moon in ScorpioEmotional intensity, anxiety, secrecy, trust issues
Mars in CancerSuppressed anger, mood-driven action, property or sibling issues
Mercury in PiscesScattered thinking, trouble with detail, but strong intuition
Jupiter in CapricornLimited faith or optimism, delayed blessings from children or teachers
Venus in VirgoCritical in love, delays in marriage, perfectionism
Saturn in AriesImpatience, frustration, difficulty with authority, but determination

The houses that the planet rules for your Lagna are affected too. A debilitated 7th lord can make partnerships harder; a debilitated 10th lord can make career progress slower.

Neecha bhanga: when debilitation is cancelled

Classical texts list conditions that cancel debilitation (neecha bhanga). The most widely used are:

  1. The lord of the debilitation sign is in a kendra (1, 4, 7 or 10) from the Lagna or the Moon. Example: Jupiter in Capricorn with Saturn (lord of Capricorn) in a kendra.
  2. The planet that would be exalted in that sign is in a kendra from the Lagna or Moon. Example: Jupiter debilitated in Capricorn while Mars (exalted in Capricorn) is in a kendra.
  3. The debilitated planet is aspected by the lord of its debilitation sign.
  4. The debilitated planet is exalted in the Navamsa (D9).
  5. The debilitated planet is in a kendra itself (some authorities).

When debilitation is cancelled, the planet often rises strongly after early struggles, a pattern astrologers call Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga. Many successful people have it. Read the full Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga guide and check strength with the Shadbala calculator.

Debilitated but retrograde

Some astrologers hold that a retrograde planet in its debilitation sign behaves more like an exalted one, because retrograde planets are considered strong (cheshta bala). Views differ, so treat it as one factor among many rather than a rule.

Worked example

A Leo Lagna chart with Venus in Virgo in house 2:

  • Venus is debilitated (Virgo).
  • For Leo Lagna, Venus rules houses 3 and 10 (courage and career).
  • Without help, this could show a career that needs extra effort and a critical, detail-focused approach to money and speech.
  • Now suppose Mercury (lord of Virgo) is in the 10th house, a kendra. Neecha bhanga applies: Venus's debilitation is cancelled. Mercury in the 10th also links the 2nd and 10th, so career and earnings grow strongly after early hurdles.

This is why astrologers never stop at "debilitated = bad".

Debilitated planets in each house type

Where the debilitated planet sitsWhat usually happens
Kendra (1, 4, 7, 10)Struggle is visible, but kendra placement is one route to cancellation; often a slow, strong rise
Trikona (5, 9)Blessings of that house come with effort or through unconventional teachers and beliefs
Upachaya (3, 6, 11)Effort-driven houses can turn the weakness into determination and gradual gains
Dusthana (8, 12)Some astrologers see a "double negative" that weakens the problems of these houses (a form of viparita raja yoga when the planet is a dusthana lord)

Debilitated planets in their mahadasha

A debilitated planet's mahadasha often begins with obstacles in its areas of life and improves as the person adapts. If neecha bhanga applies, the second half of the dasha frequently brings a marked rise. Watch the antardashas of the planet that cancels the debilitation: they often trigger the turnaround. Check your timeline with the dasha calculator.

Debilitated planets in transit

When a slow planet transits its debilitation sign, its significations can feel weaker for everyone for that period, for example Jupiter in Capricorn (about once every 12 years) or Saturn in Aries (about once every 29½ years). This is a background mood; your personal chart and dasha decide how much you feel it.

Practice: check your own chart for neecha bhanga

  1. List any debilitated planets in your chart.
  2. For each, find the lord of the sign it sits in. Is that lord in a kendra from the Lagna or the Moon?
  3. Find the planet that is exalted in that sign. Is it in a kendra from the Lagna or the Moon?
  4. Check the debilitated planet's sign in the D9 chart.

If any answer is yes, the debilitation is at least partly cancelled.

Key takeaways

  • Debilitation is always opposite exaltation: Sun Libra, Moon Scorpio, Mars Cancer, Mercury Pisces, Jupiter Capricorn, Venus Virgo, Saturn Aries.
  • A debilitated planet struggles to deliver its natural results.
  • Neecha bhanga (cancellation) is common and can turn into a powerful rise.
  • Always check house lordship, the D9 and the dasha before judging.

Additional notes on debilitation

Debilitation also affects the people a planet signifies. A debilitated Sun may show a father who faced hardship; a debilitated Moon may point to a mother who struggled emotionally; a debilitated Venus can show a partner with high standards. These are possibilities to confirm with the relevant houses, never conclusions on their own.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Panicking about a debilitated planet. Check for neecha bhanga first: it is very common.
  • Forgetting the mirror rule. Debilitation is always opposite exaltation, so you only need to memorise one table.
  • Ignoring the D9. A planet debilitated in D1 but strong in D9 can perform well.
  • Assuming the life area is denied. Debilitation usually means more effort or an unusual route, not complete denial.

Frequently asked questions

Which planet is debilitated in which sign?

Sun in Libra, Moon in Scorpio, Mars in Cancer, Mercury in Pisces, Jupiter in Capricorn, Venus in Virgo and Saturn in Aries.

What is neecha bhanga?

Cancellation of debilitation. It happens, for example, when the lord of the debilitation sign or the planet exalted there sits in a kendra from the Lagna or Moon. A cancelled debilitation can form Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga.

Is a debilitated planet always bad?

No. It shows extra effort or an unusual path in its life areas, and debilitation is often cancelled. Many successful people have debilitated planets.

What is the remedy for a debilitated planet?

Traditional remedies include strengthening the lord of the sign, mantras, charity and disciplined effort in the planet's areas of life. Gemstones are usually avoided for debilitated planets unless an experienced astrologer recommends them.

How do I check if a planet is debilitated in my chart?

Look at each planet's sign in your birth chart and compare it with the table above. Most chart tools, including AstroWord's calculators, label exalted and debilitated planets.

Is debilitated Venus bad for marriage?

It can make relationships more demanding: high expectations, criticism or delays. Cancellation is common, though, and the 7th house, its lord and the D9 chart must all be read before judging marriage.

What does a debilitated Moon in Scorpio mean?

Feelings run very deep and private, with possible emotional storms or trust issues. It also gives psychological insight, resilience and talent for research or healing. A bright Moon or Jupiter's aspect helps a great deal.

What does debilitated Saturn in Aries mean?

Impatience and frustration with slow progress, sometimes conflict with authority. Once the person learns patience, it often produces a self-made, determined achiever, especially if Mars (lord of Aries) is strong.

Can a debilitated planet become a yoga?

Yes. When its debilitation is cancelled, it can form Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga, which often shows a rise from humble beginnings to considerable success.

How long does it take to learn this properly?

Most learners understand the basics in a single sitting, but it takes a few weeks of applying it to real charts before it feels natural. Work through several charts of family and friends, noting what fits and what does not.

Do I need to memorise everything in this lesson?

No. Keep the tables handy and refer to them while reading charts. With regular practice the most important facts become second nature, and the rest you can always look up.
