In Vedic astrology, planetary power is not judged solely by zodiac placement. A planet placed in an enemy sign might still be extraordinarily potent if it has high directional (Dig), temporal (Kala), or motional (Chesta) strength. Shadbala provides an objective, mathematical scoring framework across 6 fundamental dimensions:
Measures strength derived from zodiacal sign placement, exaltation distance (Uccha Bala), 7 divisional charts (Saptavargaja Bala), odd/even sign alignments (Ojayugmarasyamsa), angular house dignity (Kendra Bala), and decanates (Drekkana Bala).
Measures angular alignment with directional power peaks: Jupiter & Mercury in the East (1st House / Ascendant), Sun & Mars in the South (10th House / MC), Moon & Venus in the North (4th House / IC), and Saturn in the West (7th House / Descendant).
Measures timing influences including diurnal/nocturnal distance from midday/midnight (Nathonnatha), lunar fortnight elongation (Paksha), tri-part division of day and night (Thribhaga), weekday ruler (Vara), planetary hour (Hora), solstitial declination (Ayana), and cyclical year/month rulers (Abda & Masa).
Calculates planetary velocity and orbital anomaly (Seeghrochcha vs mean-true positions) for the five Tara Grahas (Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn), solar solstice motion for Sun, and lunar elongation for Moon.
Fixed natural luminosity scores derived classically in descending order of inherent brightness: Sun (60), Moon (51.43), Venus (42.86), Jupiter (34.29), Mercury (25.71), Mars (17.14), and Saturn (8.57).
Net balance of all incoming planetary aspects (Drishti). Full continuous aspect curves across 360 degrees, augmented by special planetary aspects (Saturn on 3rd/10th, Mars on 4th/8th, Jupiter on 5th/9th), weighted +1/4 for benefics and -1/4 for malefics.
Shadbala means 'six strengths' — a BPHS method that scores each planet's real capacity to deliver results, measured in Virupas and Rupas, rather than just describing its sign or house placement.
Sign dignity alone doesn't determine outcomes. A planet can be exalted but still score low Shadbala if its directional, temporal, or aspectual strength is weak — Shadbala captures this fuller picture.
Drik Bala can go negative when a planet receives more malefic aspects than benefic ones. This is expected by classical design, not an error — it means the planet is under net malefic pressure.
Each planet has its own classical minimum: Sun ~390, Moon ~360, Mars ~300, Mercury ~420, Jupiter ~390, Venus ~330, Saturn ~300 Virupas (per BPHS).
