Exalted Planets (Uccha) in Vedic Astrology

Lesson 5 of AstroWord's free Vedic astrology course · about 5 minutes · Parashari system, Lahiri ayanamsa

By AstroWord · Updated 4 November 2026 · Based on Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra

Exaltation (uchcha) is the sign where a planet is at its strongest: the Sun is exalted in Aries, the Moon in Taurus, Mars in Capricorn, Mercury in Virgo, Jupiter in Cancer, Venus in Pisces and Saturn in Libra. Each planet also has an exact degree of deepest exaltation, such as the Sun at 10° Aries and Saturn at 20° Libra. An exalted planet gives its best and fullest results, like a person at the peak of their career, though its house lordship and the rest of the chart still matter.

Every graha has one sign where it is at its very strongest. This is called exaltation (uchcha).

Lesson notes

  • Exaltation signs, part 1: Sun - Aries Moon - Taurus Mars - Capricorn Mercury - Virgo
  • Part 2: Jupiter - Cancer Venus - Pisces Saturn - Libra
  • When a graha sits in a sign it rules, it is in its own sign - strong and at home. Example: Mars in Aries. Exaltation is usually a different sign from the one a graha owns. Mercury is the only one exalted in a sign it owns - Virgo.
  • An exalted graha gives its best results - like a person at the peak of their career.

Answer: Own sign. The Sun owns Leo but is exalted in Aries.

What does exalted mean in astrology?

Every planet has one sign where its nature flows most powerfully and purely. That sign is its exaltation (uchcha, meaning high). There the planet is like a respected guest of honour: everything it signifies works smoothly and abundantly.

Exaltation is different from owning a sign. In its own sign a planet is at home and comfortable; in its exaltation sign it is celebrated and at its peak. Both are strong placements, and exaltation is the stronger of the two.

Exaltation signs and exact degrees

PlanetExaltation signDeepest exaltation degreeOwn sign(s)
SunAries10°Leo
MoonTaurus3°Cancer
MarsCapricorn28°Aries, Scorpio
MercuryVirgo15°Gemini, Virgo
JupiterCancer5°Sagittarius, Pisces
VenusPisces27°Taurus, Libra
SaturnLibra20°Capricorn, Aquarius

The exact degree is called the deep exaltation point (param uchcha). A planet anywhere in its exaltation sign is exalted, but it is at its absolute peak near this degree.

Mercury is the only planet exalted in a sign it also owns (Virgo). For every other planet, exaltation and ownership are different signs.

Why are planets exalted in these signs?

Each exaltation makes symbolic sense:

  • Sun in Aries: the start of the zodiac and of the solar year (Mesha Sankranti); bold, fiery initiative suits the king.
  • Moon in Taurus: a calm, fertile, earthy sign where the mind finds comfort and stability.
  • Mars in Capricorn: disciplined, strategic action; the warrior with a plan.
  • Mercury in Virgo: precise, analytical, detail-loving; the intellect at its sharpest.
  • Jupiter in Cancer: wisdom combined with compassion and care; the nurturing teacher.
  • Venus in Pisces: love at its most devoted, artistic and selfless.
  • Saturn in Libra: discipline in the service of fairness; justice delivered patiently.

These stories help you remember the table and understand what an exalted planet gives.

What does an exalted planet give?

An exalted planet strengthens everything it signifies:

Exalted planetTypical gifts
Sun in AriesLeadership, confidence, authority, good vitality, respect from government
Moon in TaurusEmotional stability, contentment, popularity, good mother relationship
Mars in CapricornDisciplined courage, executive ability, property, success through strategy
Mercury in VirgoExcellent intellect, analysis, writing, accounting, problem-solving
Jupiter in CancerWisdom, generosity, good children, wealth, protection, faith
Venus in PiscesDeep love, artistic gifts, devotion, comforts, a caring partner
Saturn in LibraFairness, patience, steady lasting success, respect through hard work

It also strengthens the houses the planet rules for your Lagna. An exalted 10th lord lifts the career; an exalted 7th lord helps marriage.

Exaltation is not automatically good

Two cautions stop beginners overrating exaltation:

  1. House lordship still matters. An exalted planet that rules the 6th, 8th or 12th for your Lagna can give strong results for those difficult houses too. For a Taurus Lagna, Jupiter rules the 8th and 11th; exalted in Cancer it can give big gains but also strengthens 8th-house matters.
  2. Other factors can weaken it. An exalted planet that is combust (too close to the Sun), afflicted by malefics, or very weak in the Navamsa (D9) may not deliver fully.

Astrologers sometimes say an exalted planet in a dusthana gives "the best results of a bad house".

Moolatrikona: between exaltation and own sign

Between exaltation and own sign sits a third strong state, moolatrikona, a planet's "office" where it works most dutifully:

PlanetMoolatrikona
SunLeo 0° to 20°
MoonTaurus 3° to 30°
MarsAries 0° to 12°
MercuryVirgo 15° to 20°
JupiterSagittarius 0° to 10°
VenusLibra 0° to 15°
SaturnAquarius 0° to 20°

The strength order is: exaltation, then moolatrikona, then own sign. You will see the complete scale in Lesson 16.

What about Rahu and Ketu?

Classical Parashari texts do not settle exaltation signs for Rahu and Ketu, and later authors disagree. Common views are Rahu exalted in Taurus (or Gemini) and Ketu in Scorpio (or Sagittarius). Because there is no agreement, this course does not rely on them. Read Rahu and Ketu through the sign they sit in and its lord instead.

Exaltation in the Navamsa (D9)

A planet exalted in the D9 Navamsa chart gains inner strength even if it looks ordinary in the main chart. Some astrologers consider a planet in the same sign in both D1 and D9 (vargottama) to be almost as strong as exalted. You can check both with the free D9 chart calculator and read about vargottama planets.

Worked example

A Cancer Lagna chart with Jupiter in Cancer in house 1:

  • Jupiter is exalted (Cancer) and in the Lagna, a kendra and trikona.
  • For Cancer Lagna, Jupiter rules houses 6 and 9: one difficult house and one of the best houses.
  • Result: a wise, protected, fortunate person (9th lord exalted in the 1st), with Jupiter's 5th, 7th and 9th aspects blessing children, marriage and luck. It also forms Hamsa yoga, one of the Panch Mahapurusha yogas. The 6th-lord side may show some health care needs or service work.

Panch Mahapurusha yogas: exaltation in a kendra

When Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn is exalted or in its own sign in a kendra (houses 1, 4, 7 or 10) from the Lagna, it forms one of the five Panch Mahapurusha yogas, the "five great person" combinations:

YogaPlanetSigns that qualifyTypical gifts
RuchakaMarsAries, Scorpio, CapricornCourage, leadership, physical strength
BhadraMercuryGemini, VirgoIntellect, eloquence, business skill
HamsaJupiterSagittarius, Pisces, CancerWisdom, virtue, respect
MalavyaVenusTaurus, Libra, PiscesBeauty, comfort, artistic success
SasaSaturnCapricorn, Aquarius, LibraAuthority, organisation, endurance

These are among the best-known yogas in Vedic astrology. The Panch Mahapurusha Yoga guide explains how to judge their strength.

Exalted planets in transit

Exaltation matters for transits too. When a slow planet moves through its exaltation sign, its good results tend to be stronger for everyone, and especially for people whose charts it activates:

  • Jupiter in Cancer (about once every 12 years for about a year) is widely watched as a period of growth and blessing.
  • Saturn in Libra (about once every 29½ years for about 2½ years) is considered Saturn at its fairest.
  • The Sun in Aries every April (Mesha Sankranti onwards) marks the Sun's peak strength of the year.

You can check where the planets are right now on the daily transits page.

How exaltation changes a reading: quick checklist

When you spot an exalted planet in a chart, ask:

  1. Which houses does it rule for this Lagna? Those areas get a boost.
  2. Which house is it in? That area of life shows its gifts.
  3. Is it near its deep exaltation degree, or at the edge of the sign?
  4. Is it combust, heavily afflicted, or weak in the D9?
  5. When does its mahadasha or antardasha run? That is when the gifts arrive.

Key takeaways

  • Exaltation signs: Sun Aries, Moon Taurus, Mars Capricorn, Mercury Virgo, Jupiter Cancer, Venus Pisces, Saturn Libra.
  • Each has a deep exaltation degree where it is strongest.
  • Exalted planets give their best results, but house lordship and other factors still apply.
  • Exalted or own-sign planets in kendras form the Panch Mahapurusha yogas.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Mixing up exaltation and own sign. Mars owns Aries but is exalted in Capricorn.
  • Assuming exaltation guarantees an easy life. Check house lordship, combustion and the D9.
  • Forgetting the exact degree. A planet at the very end of its exaltation sign is still exalted, but less intensely than near its deep exaltation point.
  • Giving Rahu and Ketu fixed exaltations. Schools disagree; use them cautiously.

Frequently asked questions

Which planet is exalted in which sign?

Sun in Aries, Moon in Taurus, Mars in Capricorn, Mercury in Virgo, Jupiter in Cancer, Venus in Pisces and Saturn in Libra.

What is the deep exaltation degree of each planet?

Sun 10° Aries, Moon 3° Taurus, Mars 28° Capricorn, Mercury 15° Virgo, Jupiter 5° Cancer, Venus 27° Pisces and Saturn 20° Libra.

Is an exalted planet always good?

It is strong, but not always comfortable. If it rules difficult houses for your Lagna, it strengthens those matters too. Combustion and a weak D9 position can also reduce its benefits.

Which planet is exalted in its own sign?

Only Mercury, which both owns and is exalted in Virgo.

What is the difference between exalted and own sign?

In its own sign a planet is at home and comfortable; in its exaltation sign it is at its peak. Exaltation is stronger, and moolatrikona sits between the two.

Does exalted Jupiter in Cancer guarantee wealth?

No single placement guarantees anything. Exalted Jupiter strongly supports wisdom, children and fortune, and wealth becomes very likely when Jupiter is also linked to the 2nd, 9th or 11th houses for your Lagna. Weak lords of those houses, or a difficult dasha sequence, can still delay results.

What is the effect of exalted Venus in Pisces in the 7th house?

It is one of the classic signs of a loving, devoted marriage and a caring, artistic partner. It forms Malavya yoga because Pisces is Venus's exaltation and the 7th is a kendra.

Can an exalted planet be weak?

Yes. Combustion (being very close to the Sun), heavy affliction by malefics, a weak D9 position or a very low Shadbala score can all reduce what an exalted planet delivers. Check strength with the Shadbala calculator.

Is it good to have many exalted planets?

Generally yes, because each one strengthens its areas of life. But a chart with several exalted planets ruling difficult houses can still bring intense experiences. Balance across the chart matters more than the count.
