Lesson 4 of AstroWord's free Vedic astrology course · about 5 minutes · Parashari system, Lahiri ayanamsa

By AstroWord · Updated 4 November 2026 · Based on Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra

In Vedic astrology Venus (Shukra) signifies love, marriage, beauty, art, music, luxury and comfort (and the wife in a man's chart); Saturn (Shani) signifies discipline, hard work, delay, longevity, servants and justice; Rahu signifies desire, obsession, foreign things, technology and sudden change; and Ketu signifies detachment, spirituality, past karma and letting go. Rahu and Ketu are the lunar nodes: they always sit exactly opposite each other and always move backwards (retrograde). Saturn is the slowest visible graha, taking about 2½ years to cross one sign.

The last four: the lover, the slow teacher, and the two shadow grahas.

Venus (Shukra): love, beauty and comfort

AreaVenus signifies
QualitiesLove, charm, harmony, taste, sensuality, diplomacy
PeopleWife or partner (especially in a man's chart), women, artists, designers
ThingsMarriage, romance, arts, music, fashion, perfume, vehicles, luxury, money for pleasure
BodyReproductive system, kidneys, face, complexion
ProblemsOver-indulgence, laziness, relationship drama
DignityOwn signs Taurus and Libra; exalted in Pisces; debilitated in Virgo

Venus is one of the two ministers of the court and the guru of the asuras (demons) in myth, Shukracharya, who held the secret of reviving the dead. That story gives Venus its link to life-force, pleasure and worldly skill.

A strong Venus gives an attractive personality, artistic talent, happy relationships and the ability to enjoy life. A weak or afflicted Venus can show delays or difficulties in love, or too much focus on pleasure. Venus is the main planet checked for marriage in a man's chart and is important for everyone's love life and comforts. Read the full Venus in Vedic astrology guide.

Saturn (Shani): discipline and time

AreaSaturn signifies
QualitiesDiscipline, patience, endurance, responsibility, justice, humility
PeopleServants, workers, labourers, the elderly, the poor, those who serve
ThingsHard work, delay, longevity, old age, iron, oil, agriculture, mining, law
BodyBones, joints, teeth, nerves, chronic conditions
ProblemsDelay, depression, loneliness, fear, chronic illness, poverty when afflicted
DignityOwn signs Capricorn and Aquarius; exalted in Libra; debilitated in Aries
Special aspects3rd, 7th and 10th houses from itself

Saturn takes about 29½ years to circle the zodiac, about 2½ years in each sign. Because it is slow, its effects are slow: Saturn delays but rarely denies. It is the planet of karma and justice. It gives back exactly what you have earned, which is why people who work patiently and honestly often find Saturn periods rewarding in the end.

Saturn is famous for Sade Sati, its 7½-year transit over the Moon, and for being the yogakaraka (best planet) for Taurus and Libra Lagnas.

Rahu: the head of the dragon

AreaRahu signifies
QualitiesDesire, ambition, obsession, innovation, cleverness, rebellion
PeopleForeigners, outsiders, unconventional people, the crowd
ThingsForeign lands, technology, aviation, media, politics, speculation, poisons, illusion
ProblemsGreed, anxiety, addiction, confusion, scandal, sudden falls
Dignity (non-classical)Some texts give exaltation in Taurus or Gemini; views differ

Rahu is the north lunar node. In myth, the demon Svarbhanu drank the nectar of immortality and was beheaded by Vishnu; the head became Rahu and the body Ketu. Rahu has a head but no body: endless appetite that can never be satisfied.

In a chart, Rahu shows where you feel hungry for more, where you break rules and where you can rise suddenly. A well-placed Rahu (especially in houses 3, 6, 10 and 11) can give huge worldly success, often in modern fields such as technology, media and international business.

Ketu: the tail of the dragon

AreaKetu signifies
QualitiesDetachment, intuition, spirituality, introspection, precision
PeopleSpiritual seekers, monks, researchers, healers
ThingsMoksha (liberation), past-life skills, occult knowledge, sudden endings
ProblemsConfusion, isolation, sudden losses, lack of direction
Dignity (non-classical)Some texts give exaltation in Scorpio or Sagittarius; views differ

Ketu has a body but no head: action without worldly desire. It shows where you already have skill from the past and where you may feel disinterested or detached. Ketu is linked to spirituality and liberation, and a well-placed Ketu can give deep insight, research ability and healing gifts.

Rahu and Ketu always sit opposite each other

Because they are the two ends of one axis, Rahu and Ketu are always exactly 180 degrees apart: in signs 7 apart and houses 7 apart. If Rahu is in your 1st house, Ketu is in your 7th; if Rahu is in the 4th, Ketu is in the 10th.

The axis shows a lifelong tension: Rahu's house is where you are pushed to grow and grab; Ketu's house is where you already know enough and are asked to let go. They move backwards through the zodiac, spending about 1½ years in each sign and completing the circle in about 18 years.

Saturn, Rahu and Ketu are not "bad luck"

Beginners often fear these three. In fact:

  • Saturn gives careers built to last, respect earned through work and long life.
  • Rahu gives ambition, innovation and the courage to try what others will not.
  • Ketu gives depth, wisdom, research skill and spiritual peace.

They simply ask more of you than Venus or Jupiter do. Understanding what each wants turns them from fears into tools.

Worked example: the Rahu-Ketu axis

Rahu in the 10th house and Ketu in the 4th:

  • Rahu in the 10th: strong hunger for career and status, unconventional or international work, possible sudden rise.
  • Ketu in the 4th: some detachment from home comforts or homeland; the person may move away from where they grew up, or feel restless at home.

Life lesson: build a great career (Rahu) without losing touch with inner peace and roots (Ketu).

Their mahadashas

  • Venus (20 years, the longest): love, marriage, comforts, art and money. Usually a pleasant period if Venus is strong.
  • Saturn (19 years): hard work, responsibility, career building, slow but lasting results.
  • Rahu (18 years): ambition, foreign links, sudden rises and changes, sometimes confusion.
  • Ketu (7 years): detachment, spirituality, endings that clear the way for something new.

Key takeaways

  • Venus brings love and comfort, Saturn discipline and time, Rahu desire and ambition, Ketu detachment and insight.
  • Saturn is exalted in Libra and debilitated in Aries; Venus is exalted in Pisces and debilitated in Virgo.
  • Rahu and Ketu are the lunar nodes, always opposite each other and always moving backwards.
  • None of these planets is simply bad: each asks for a different kind of maturity.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Treating Rahu and Ketu as visible planets. They are calculated points.
  • Fearing every Saturn placement. Saturn in houses 3, 6, 10 and 11, or exalted in Libra, is often excellent.
  • Reading Rahu without its dispositor. Rahu acts like the lord of the sign it sits in.
  • Forgetting that Venus is more than romance. It also signifies comforts, vehicles, art and income for pleasure.
