Lesson 3 of AstroWord's free Vedic astrology course · about 5 minutes · Parashari system, Lahiri ayanamsa
By AstroWord · Updated 4 November 2026 · Based on Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra
Three very different grahas: the warrior, the messenger and the teacher.
Lesson notes
- Mars (Mangal) is the warrior. It shows courage, energy, younger brothers and sisters, land and property, and fights.
- Mercury (Budha) is the messenger. It shows intellect, speech, writing, maths and business.
- Jupiter (Guru) is the teacher. It shows wisdom, teachers, children, wealth and good fortune. In a woman's chart it also shows the husband.
- Mars and Jupiter are male grahas. Mercury is neutral - neither male nor female.

Three planets, three kinds of intelligence
These three grahas show three different ways of meeting the world:
- Mars acts. It solves problems with energy, courage and force.
- Mercury thinks. It solves problems with analysis, language and cleverness.
- Jupiter understands. It solves problems with wisdom, ethics and the bigger picture.
Most people lean on one of the three. A chart with a strong Mars produces doers; a strong Mercury produces communicators and analysts; a strong Jupiter produces teachers, advisers and guides.
Mars (Mangal): the warrior
| Area | Mars signifies |
|---|---|
| Qualities | Courage, energy, drive, competitiveness, decisiveness |
| People | Younger siblings, soldiers, police, athletes, surgeons, engineers |
| Things | Land, property, real estate, weapons, machinery, fire |
| Body | Muscles, blood (with the Moon), bone marrow, injuries, surgery |
| Problems | Anger, accidents, quarrels, impatience, inflammation |
| Dignity | Own signs Aries and Scorpio; exalted in Capricorn; debilitated in Cancer |
| Special aspects | 4th, 7th and 8th houses from itself |
Mars is the army chief of the planetary court. It protects and fights. A well-placed Mars gives stamina, initiative and the courage to take on challenges; a badly placed Mars can make a person reckless, argumentative or accident-prone.
Mars is also the planet behind Manglik dosha: Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house is traditionally checked before marriage because its heat can strain partnerships. There are many cancellations, which you can check with the free Manglik calculator and the Manglik dosha guide.
Mercury (Budha): the messenger
| Area | Mercury signifies |
|---|---|
| Qualities | Intelligence, logic, wit, adaptability, humour, curiosity |
| People | Students, writers, accountants, traders, young people, maternal relatives |
| Things | Books, communication, trade, numbers, documents, technology |
| Body | Nervous system, skin, speech, lungs (with the Moon) |
| Problems | Nervousness, overthinking, indecision, skin issues |
| Dignity | Own signs Gemini and Virgo; exalted in Virgo; debilitated in Pisces |
| Special aspects | Only the 7th, like most planets |
Mercury is the prince: young, quick and playful. It is the planet of buddhi, the reasoning intellect. A strong Mercury gives sharp thinking, good speech and business sense; a weak Mercury can show nervousness, scattered thinking or trouble with studies.
Mercury is neutral (neither male nor female) and absorbs the nature of the planets near it. It is always close to the Sun in the sky (never more than about 28 degrees away), so Mercury-Sun conjunctions are very common. When the two sit together without Mercury being too close (combust), they form Budhaditya yoga, a well-known combination for intelligence and recognition.
Jupiter (Guru): the teacher
| Area | Jupiter signifies |
|---|---|
| Qualities | Wisdom, optimism, faith, generosity, ethics, expansion |
| People | Teachers, gurus, priests, judges, advisers, children, the husband (in a woman's chart) |
| Things | Wealth, banks, law, religion, scriptures, higher education |
| Body | Liver, fat, hips, thighs |
| Problems | Over-optimism, weight gain, preachiness |
| Dignity | Own signs Sagittarius and Pisces; exalted in Cancer; debilitated in Capricorn |
| Special aspects | 5th, 7th and 9th houses from itself |
Jupiter is the great benefic and the guru of the gods (Brihaspati). Wherever it sits or aspects, it tends to expand and protect. Its 5th and 9th aspects reach the houses of children, intelligence, luck and dharma, which is why Jupiter's aspect is so valued.
Jupiter is the main significator (karaka) of children, wealth and wisdom for every chart. In traditional readings for women it also represents the husband, just as Venus represents the wife in a man's chart.
Male, female and neutral planets
| Gender | Planets |
|---|---|
| Male | Sun, Mars, Jupiter |
| Female | Moon, Venus (and Rahu in some texts) |
| Neutral | Mercury, Saturn (and Ketu in some texts) |
Planetary gender is used in questions about children, the gender of people indicated by a house, and in prashna (horary) astrology. It also describes energy: male planets are outgoing and assertive, female planets receptive and nurturing, neutral planets mental or detached.
Mars, Mercury and Jupiter as friends and enemies
Their relationships explain a lot about how they combine:
- Mars and Jupiter are friends. Together they give principled action: soldiers with a code, ethical leaders, lawyers who fight for justice (Guru-Mangal yoga).
- Mars treats Mercury as an enemy. Mars wants to act; Mercury wants to think. Together they can give sharp, argumentative speech, or brilliant technical and engineering minds.
- Jupiter treats Mercury as an enemy, while Mercury is neutral to Jupiter. Jupiter's broad wisdom and Mercury's detailed logic do not always agree, but together they can produce excellent teachers of practical subjects.
Mars, Mercury and Jupiter in the 10th house (career)
| Planet in the 10th | Typical career themes |
|---|---|
| Mars | Engineering, police, army, surgery, sports, real estate, management |
| Mercury | Writing, journalism, accounting, IT, commerce, teaching languages |
| Jupiter | Teaching, law, banking, finance, counselling, religion, consulting |
The sign matters too: Mars in Capricorn (exalted) in the 10th is a classic signature of strong leadership and career success, while Mercury in Virgo (exalted and own sign) in the 10th suits analytical professions. For more on career, see the free career report and the Amatyakaraka calculator.
Worked example
A Virgo Lagna chart with:
- Mercury in Virgo in house 1: the Lagna lord, exalted and in its own sign in the Lagna. A sharp, analytical, articulate person (this also forms Bhadra yoga, one of the Panch Mahapurusha yogas).
- Jupiter in Pisces in house 7: own sign in the house of marriage, aspecting the 11th, 1st and 3rd. A wise, supportive spouse, gains through partnerships, and Jupiter's aspect on the Lagna adds wisdom and protection.
- Mars in Capricorn in house 5: exalted, aspecting the 8th, 11th and 12th. Strong drive in studies or creative competition, interest in research and good gains.
Three strong planets, three clear themes: intelligence, a good partnership and competitive drive.

Mars, Mercury and Jupiter as mahadashas
- Mars mahadasha (7 years): action, property matters, competition, courage; can bring conflicts or surgery if Mars is afflicted.
- Mercury mahadasha (17 years): studies, business, communication, travel for work, writing.
- Jupiter mahadasha (16 years): growth, children, marriage (for women), teachers, wealth and spiritual learning.

Key takeaways
- Mars is the warrior (courage, property, siblings), Mercury the messenger (intellect, speech, trade) and Jupiter the teacher (wisdom, children, wealth).
- Mars is exalted in Capricorn, Mercury in Virgo and Jupiter in Cancer.
- Mars aspects the 4th, 7th and 8th; Jupiter the 5th, 7th and 9th.
- Mars and Jupiter are male, Mercury neutral; Mercury takes on the nature of its company.
Common beginner mistakes
- Fearing Mars everywhere. Mars in the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th is a great asset.
- Ignoring Mercury's combustion. Mercury very close to the Sun can lose some strength, though many astrologers treat Mercury's combustion lightly because it is so common.
- Assuming Jupiter is always good. Jupiter ruling the 6th, 8th or 12th for your Lagna, or debilitated in Capricorn, can give mixed results.
- Forgetting special aspects. Mars and Jupiter influence far more houses than the one they occupy.
Frequently asked questions

What does Mercury represent in Vedic astrology?
Intelligence, speech, writing, maths, business, trade and learning. Mercury is neutral and takes on the nature of planets near it.
What does Jupiter represent in Vedic astrology?
Wisdom, teachers, children, wealth, ethics, religion and good fortune, and the husband in a woman's chart. It is the greatest natural benefic.
Which planet is responsible for education?
Mercury governs learning ability, reasoning and early education; Jupiter governs higher knowledge and wisdom; the 4th, 5th and 9th houses show education and intelligence.
Which planet is responsible for property?
Mars is the natural karaka of land and property, the 4th house shows home and real estate, and the Moon and Venus add vehicles and comforts.
What is Guru Mangal yoga?
A combination of Jupiter and Mars together or in mutual aspect. It joins wisdom with courage and is associated with leadership, principled action and success in law, defence or management.
What does debilitated Jupiter in Capricorn mean?
Jupiter is weakest in Capricorn, so its gifts of wisdom, children and fortune come with more effort or through practical channels. It is often repaired by neecha bhanga (cancellation of debilitation), for example when Saturn, the lord of Capricorn, is strong or in a kendra. Read more in the Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga guide.
Is Mars in the 7th house bad for marriage?
It is one of the Manglik placements, so it can bring passion mixed with arguments or a strong-willed partner. Many cancellations apply, such as Mars in its own or exaltation sign, or both partners being Manglik. Check with the Manglik calculator.
Which planet gives success in business?
Mercury is the natural planet of trade and commerce. A strong Mercury, a strong 7th house (business partnerships), and links between the 7th, 10th and 11th lords point to business success. Jupiter adds good judgement and Rahu adds risk-taking.
