The Sun and Moon in Vedic Astrology

Lesson 2 of AstroWord's free Vedic astrology course · about 5 minutes · Parashari system, Lahiri ayanamsa

By AstroWord · Updated 5 November 2026 · Based on Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra

In Vedic astrology the Sun (Surya) is the king of the planets and signifies the soul (atma), father, authority, government, vitality and self-confidence, while the Moon (Chandra) is the queen and signifies the mind (manas), mother, emotions, comfort and the public. Together they are the two luminaries: the Sun is hot, male and steady; the Moon is cool, female and changing. Neither ever goes retrograde, and the condition of both is checked first in every chart because they govern health and the mind.

The grahas form a royal court. The Sun and the Moon are the king and the queen.

Lesson notes

  • The Sun (Surya) is the king. It shows your soul, your father, authority, government and your vitality.
  • The Moon (Chandra) is the queen. It shows your mind, your mother, your feelings and the public.
  • The rest of the royal court: Mars - army chief Mercury - prince Jupiter and Venus - ministers Saturn - servant
  • From Earth, most grahas sometimes seem to move backwards for a while. This is called retrograde (vakri). The Sun and the Moon never go retrograde.
  • The Sun is hot and male. The Moon is cool and female.

The royal court of the planets

Classical texts describe the nine grahas as a royal court. This picture makes their roles easy to remember:

RoleGrahaWhat the role suggests

QueenMoonCare, emotion, popularity

PrinceMercuryYouth, learning, trade, wit
MinistersJupiter and VenusAdvice, wisdom (Jupiter); refinement, diplomacy (Venus)

Why the Moon is so important in Vedic astrology

Vedic astrology leans on the Moon far more than Western astrology does:

  • Moon sign (Janma Rashi): the sign Indians mean by "your rashi".
  • Nakshatra: your birth star is the Moon's nakshatra, which decides your first dasha (Unit 3).
  • Transits: traditionally counted from the Moon sign, including Sade Sati.
  • Daily panchang: tithi, nakshatra and yoga all come from the Moon's position.

Because the mind experiences everything, a strong Moon helps a person cope with almost any chart. A weak or afflicted Moon can make even good placements feel hard.

How to judge the Sun's strength

  • Sign: strongest in Aries (exalted) and Leo (own sign); weakest in Libra (debilitated).
  • House: the Sun gains directional strength (dig bala) in the 10th house and does well in houses 3, 6, 10 and 11.
  • Company: the Sun with Saturn or Rahu can show tension with the father or authority, since these are enemies of the Sun.
  • Aspects: Jupiter's aspect on the Sun is protective and gives respect.

How to judge the Moon's strength

  • Phase (paksha bala): the brighter the Moon, the stronger. A Moon near full is powerful; near new moon it is weak.
  • Sign: strongest in Taurus (exalted) and Cancer (own sign); weakest in Scorpio.
  • House: the Moon gains directional strength in the 4th house.
  • Company and aspects: Jupiter with or aspecting the Moon gives wisdom and emotional stability (the famous Gaja Kesari yoga when Jupiter is in a kendra from the Moon); Saturn with the Moon can give seriousness or low moods; Rahu with the Moon can bring anxiety or restless imagination.
  • Kemadruma: a Moon with no planets in the houses either side of it (excluding the Sun, Rahu and Ketu) forms Kemadruma yoga, traditionally a sign of loneliness or struggle, though it is cancelled by many factors.

Hot and cool, male and female

The Sun is hot, dry and masculine; the Moon is cool, moist and feminine. In a chart this shows up as two sides of every person: the drive to stand out and lead (Sun) and the need to feel safe and connected (Moon). Healthy people need both.

When the Sun dominates, a person can be confident but rigid. When the Moon dominates, a person can be caring but changeable. Balance between the two luminaries is one of the first things a Vedic astrologer looks for.

The Sun and Moon never go retrograde

From Earth, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn sometimes appear to move backwards (retrograde). The Sun and Moon never do, because their apparent motion comes from the Earth's orbit (for the Sun) and the Moon's own orbit around the Earth. Rahu and Ketu, on the other hand, always move backwards. You will meet retrograde planets in Lesson 27.

Sun-Moon relationship in the chart

The angle between the Sun and Moon at birth gives the tithi (lunar day) you were born on. A Moon close to the Sun (new moon birth) is weak in light; a Moon opposite the Sun (full moon birth) is bright. Many astrologers also look at the house distance between the two luminaries: Sun and Moon in the same sign or in signs 6 or 8 apart can show inner conflict between will and feeling. You can find your birth tithi with the free birth tithi calculator.

Simple remedies traditionally used

Traditional remedies for a weak Sun include offering water to the rising Sun (Surya arghya), reciting the Aditya Hridayam and respecting one's father. For a weak Moon, traditions suggest regular sleep, time near water, offering milk or water to Shiva on Mondays and caring for one's mother. These are spiritual practices, not substitutes for medical care.

Key takeaways

  • The Sun is the king: soul, father, authority and vitality. The Moon is the queen: mind, mother, emotions and the public.
  • The Sun is exalted in Aries; the Moon is exalted in Taurus.
  • The Moon is central to Vedic astrology: rashi, nakshatra, dashas and transits all come from it.
  • Neither luminary ever goes retrograde.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Using the Sun sign as the main sign. In Vedic astrology the Moon sign and Lagna are more important for daily life.
  • Ignoring the Moon's phase. A debilitated but bright Moon may still do reasonably well; an exalted Moon close to the new moon can be weaker than it looks.
  • Thinking a strong Sun means an easy father relationship. A strong Sun can also show a powerful, dominant father; read the 9th house too.
  • Overlooking the Moon in health questions. Mental health, sleep and fluids are Moon matters.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Sun represent in Vedic astrology?

The soul, self-confidence, father, authority, government, vitality and the heart. A strong Sun gives leadership and respect; a weak Sun can show low confidence or trouble with authority.

What does the Moon represent in Vedic astrology?

The mind, emotions, mother, comfort, the public and memory. Because it moves fastest, the Moon is used for dashas, transits and daily predictions.

Why is the Moon sign more important than the Sun sign in Vedic astrology?

The Moon represents the mind that experiences life, and its fast movement makes it ideal for timing. Indian horoscopes, nakshatras, dashas and Sade Sati are all based on it. Find yours with the Moon sign calculator.

Can the Sun and Moon be retrograde?

No. They are the only two grahas that never go retrograde. Rahu and Ketu are always retrograde, and the other five planets sometimes are.

What is the best placement for the Moon?

The Moon is exalted in Taurus and strong in its own sign Cancer. It also gains directional strength in the 4th house and does well when bright, aspected by Jupiter and free from Saturn and Rahu.

What does a weak Sun do?

A weak Sun (for example debilitated in Libra, close to Rahu or Saturn, or in the 12th without support) can show low self-confidence, a difficult relationship with the father or authority, and lower vitality. Other strengths in the chart often compensate.

What happens in the Moon mahadasha?

The Moon's 10-year mahadasha brings emotional and family matters, travel, contact with the public and changes of residence to the front. A strong Moon makes it a popular, comfortable period; a weak Moon can bring emotional ups and downs. See the dasha calculator to check when yours runs.

Is a full moon birth lucky?

A Moon near full is at maximum brightness and strength, which is generally considered favourable for the mind and popularity. The rest of the chart still decides how fortunate the person is overall.

Which house is best for the Sun?

The Sun gains directional strength (dig bala) in the 10th house, where it gives authority and fame. It also does well in the 3rd, 6th and 11th houses, and in its own sign Leo or its exaltation sign Aries.
