In Vedic astrology the natural benefics are Jupiter, Venus, Mercury (when not joined with malefics) and a bright, waxing Moon; the natural malefics are Saturn, Mars, Rahu, Ketu, the Sun (the mildest) and a dark, waning Moon. Benefics (saumya grahas) tend to protect, soften and give comfort; malefics (krura or papa grahas) bring pressure, effort and hard lessons. Malefics are not simply bad: in houses 3, 6, 10 and 11 they give drive and success, and for some Lagnas a natural malefic is the best planet in the chart.

Some grahas are gentle by nature and some are tough. Astrologers call them benefics and malefics.

Lesson notes

  • Natural benefics - the gentle grahas: Jupiter, Venus, Mercury and a bright (waxing) Moon. They tend to protect and help whatever they touch.
  • Natural malefics - the tough grahas: Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu and a dark (waning) Moon. They bring pressure, effort and hard lessons. The Sun is the mildest of them.
  • Two grahas can switch sides: The Moon is a benefic when it is bright and growing (waxing), and a malefic when it is dark and shrinking (waning). Mercury is a benefic on its own, but acts like a malefic when it sits with malefics.
  • Malefics aren't simply bad. Saturn builds discipline and Mars gives courage. In houses 3, 6, 10 and 11 malefics actually do well - those houses reward effort.

What do benefic and malefic mean?

Every graha has a natural temperament. Some are gentle, cooling and generous; others are harsh, hot or restrictive. Classical texts call the gentle ones saumya (soft, pleasant) and the harsh ones krura (cruel) or papa (sinful).

These labels describe the kind of experience a planet tends to bring, not moral good and evil. A benefic tends to make life easier in the area it touches. A malefic tends to make you work for it, sometimes through delay, conflict or loss, and often leaves you stronger.

The natural benefics

GrahaWhy it is beneficTypical gifts
Jupiter (Guru)The great benefic, teacher of the godsWisdom, protection, children, wealth, faith
Venus (Shukra)Planet of pleasure and harmonyLove, beauty, comfort, art, vehicles
Mercury (Budha)Neutral youth who mirrors companyIntelligence, humour, skill, trade
Waxing Moon (Chandra)Bright, growing lightEmotional ease, popularity, nourishment

Jupiter is the strongest benefic. Its aspect on a house or planet is considered protective, which is why astrologers say "Jupiter's glance removes a thousand faults".

The natural malefics

GrahaWhy it is maleficTypical lessons and strengths
Saturn (Shani)Cold, slow, restrictiveDiscipline, patience, endurance, responsibility
Mars (Mangal)Hot, sharp, aggressiveCourage, energy, protection, competitiveness
RahuInsatiable desireAmbition, innovation, worldly success, foreign gain
KetuSeparation and detachmentSpiritual insight, research, letting go
Sun (Surya)Fierce heat, egoAuthority, self-respect, leadership
Waning MoonLight shrinkingSensitivity, withdrawal

The Sun is called a krura (harsh) planet rather than a true papa (sinful) one: it is the mildest malefic, and in many charts it acts more like a royal authority than a troublemaker.

Planets that can switch sides

Two grahas change nature with circumstances:

  • The Moon is benefic when bright and malefic when dark. Most astrologers treat the Moon as benefic from roughly the 8th day of the bright fortnight (Shukla Ashtami) until the 8th day of the dark fortnight (Krishna Ashtami), and malefic around the new moon. A full Moon is at its most benefic.
  • Mercury is benefic on its own or with benefics, but takes on the nature of malefics when joined with them. Mercury with Saturn and Mars, for example, can turn sharp-tongued or anxious.

Why malefics do well in houses 3, 6, 10 and 11

Houses 3, 6, 10 and 11 are the upachaya houses, the houses of growth through effort. They involve competition (6), courage and initiative (3), hard work and status (10) and income (11). Malefics bring exactly the qualities these houses reward:

  • Saturn in the 11th: slow, steady, lasting gains and loyal elder friends.
  • Mars in the 3rd: fearless initiative, sports and bold communication.
  • Rahu in the 6th: beats enemies and competitors, often succeeds in medicine or law.
  • Sun in the 10th: authority, government work and public recognition.

By contrast, malefics in kendras or trikonas (other than the 10th) can create tension in those life areas, and malefics in the 6th, 8th or 12th from the Moon can stir the mind.

Where benefics shine and where they struggle

Benefics are happiest in kendras (1, 4, 7, 10) and trikonas (1, 5, 9), where they strengthen the pillars and luck of the chart. In dusthanas (6, 8, 12) their softness is less useful: a benefic in the 6th may not fight hard enough against enemies, and a benefic in the 8th or 12th may give its gifts in hidden or spiritual ways.

Natural nature vs functional nature

There are two separate questions about every planet:

  1. Natural nature: is it a benefic or malefic by temperament? (This lesson.)
  2. Functional nature: which houses does it rule for your Lagna? (Lesson 8.)

The second often matters more. Saturn is a natural malefic, but for Taurus and Libra Lagnas it rules both a kendra and a trikona and becomes the yogakaraka, the best planet in the chart. Jupiter is the great natural benefic, but for a Libra Lagna it rules the 3rd and 6th houses and can bring obstacles.

A good reading combines both: a naturally benefic planet that is also functionally benefic is doubly helpful; a natural malefic ruling difficult houses for your Lagna needs the most care.

Worked example

Take a Capricorn Lagna:

  • Venus is a natural benefic and rules the 5th and 10th houses, so it is the yogakaraka: doubly good.
  • Saturn is a natural malefic but rules the 1st and 2nd houses, so for this Lagna it is functionally helpful as the Lagna lord.
  • Jupiter is a natural benefic but rules the 3rd and 12th houses, so its results for Capricorn Lagna are mixed.
  • Mars is a natural malefic and rules the 4th and 11th; it can bring property and gains with some friction.

Same nine planets, different Lagna, very different verdicts. This is why Vedic astrology never judges a planet by nature alone.

Benefics and malefics in aspects

The nature of a planet also decides what its aspect does:

  • A benefic aspect (especially from Jupiter) supports and protects the house or planet it looks at.
  • A malefic aspect adds pressure: Saturn's aspect delays and tests, Mars's aspect heats and disturbs, Rahu's aspect magnifies and confuses.

When a house receives aspects from both, astrologers weigh which is stronger.

Papa kartari and shubha kartari yoga

Two simple yogas come straight from benefic and malefic placement:

  • Shubha kartari yoga: a house or planet hemmed in between two benefics (benefics in the houses either side). It is protected and supported.
  • Papa kartari yoga: a house or planet hemmed in between two malefics. It feels squeezed and stressed.

For example, a Moon with Saturn in the house before it and Mars in the house after it is in papa kartari yoga, which can show a pressured, anxious mind unless other factors help.

Malefics and benefics in each house: a quick guide

House typeBenefics placed hereMalefics placed here
Kendras (1, 4, 7, 10)Excellent: protect the pillars of lifeMixed: give strength but also friction (best in the 10th)
Trikonas (1, 5, 9)Excellent: increase luck, children, faithCan test faith, children or fortune
Upachayas (3, 6, 10, 11)Fine, but less driveExcellent: effort, victory and gains
Dusthanas (6, 8, 12)Gifts become hidden or spiritualCan reduce the problems of these houses (a malefic in the 6th destroys enemies)
2nd house (wealth, speech)Sweet speech, savingsHarsh speech, family tension

Practice: label every planet in your chart

Write your nine planets down and next to each one note:

  1. Natural benefic or malefic?
  2. If it is the Moon, is it waxing or waning? If it is Mercury, is it with malefics?
  3. Which houses does it rule for your Lagna (functional nature)?
  4. Is it in a house type where its nature works well?

A planet that scores well on all four questions is one of your chart's strengths. A planet that scores badly on all four is the one to watch in its dasha.

Key takeaways

  • Natural benefics: Jupiter, Venus, Mercury (alone) and a bright Moon. Natural malefics: Saturn, Mars, Rahu, Ketu, the Sun and a dark Moon.
  • The Moon changes with its phase; Mercury changes with its company.
  • Malefics thrive in houses 3, 6, 10 and 11; benefics thrive in kendras and trikonas.
  • Functional nature for your Lagna can outweigh natural nature.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Calling malefics "bad planets". They bring effort and strength, and often give the biggest worldly success.
  • Ignoring the Moon's phase. A new Moon and a full Moon act very differently.
  • Forgetting Mercury's company. Mercury with malefics behaves like a malefic.
  • Skipping functional nature. Always check which houses a planet rules for the specific Lagna.

Frequently asked questions

Which planets are benefic in Vedic astrology?

Jupiter, Venus, Mercury (when not with malefics) and a bright waxing Moon are natural benefics. Jupiter is the strongest of them.

Which planets are malefic in Vedic astrology?

Saturn, Mars, Rahu, Ketu, the Sun and a waning Moon are natural malefics. The Sun is the mildest; Saturn, Rahu and Mars are considered the strongest malefics.

Is the Sun a malefic planet?

It is classed as a mild malefic (krura graha) because of its heat and ego, but it is also the king of the planets and gives authority, health and self-confidence when well placed.

Are malefic planets always bad?

No. Malefics give excellent results in houses 3, 6, 10 and 11, and a natural malefic can be the best planet for certain Lagnas, such as Saturn for Taurus and Libra.

When is the Moon a benefic?

When it is bright and waxing, roughly from Shukla Ashtami (the 8th day after new moon) to Krishna Ashtami (the 8th day after full moon). Close to the new moon it is weak and treated as malefic.

Is Rahu more malefic than Saturn?

Both are strong malefics but they work differently. Saturn delays and tests until you earn the result; Rahu magnifies desire and can bring sudden rises and falls. Many astrologers consider Rahu's results less predictable, while Saturn's are slower but more lasting.

Can a benefic planet give bad results?

Yes. A benefic that is debilitated, combust, or rules difficult houses for your Lagna can disappoint. Jupiter ruling the 6th and 8th houses, or Venus ruling the 6th and 11th, may bring problems through the matters of those houses even though they are natural benefics.

What is the most malefic house position?

Malefics are most troublesome in the 8th and 12th from the Lagna or Moon, and in kendras or trikonas where they disturb important life areas. They are least harmful, and often helpful, in the 3rd, 6th and 11th.
