House Lords in Vedic Astrology Explained
Lesson 8 of AstroWord's free Vedic astrology course · about 5 minutes · Parashari system, Lahiri ayanamsa
By AstroWord · Updated 5 November 2026 · Based on Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra
The lord of a house is the planet that rules the sign on that house. Scorpio Lagna? House 7 is Taurus, so the 7th lord is Venus.
Lesson notes
- Two steps to find any house lord: 1. Find the sign on that house (count from the Lagna). 2. Ask who rules that sign (Lesson 3).
- Planets that rule two signs also rule two houses. Example: Aries Lagna - Mars rules Aries (house 1) and Scorpio (house 8). The Sun and Moon rule one sign each, so they only ever rule one house.
Practice questions and answers
- The Lagna is Aries. House 7 is Libra. Who is the 7th lord?
- Answer: Venus. Venus rules Libra.
- The Lagna is Cancer. House 10 is Aries. Who is the 10th lord?
- Answer: Mars. Mars rules Aries.
- The Lagna is Leo. Who is the 7th lord?
- Answer: Saturn. House 7 is Aquarius, ruled by Saturn.
- The Lagna is Scorpio. Who is the 10th lord?
- Answer: Sun. House 10 is Leo, ruled by the Sun.
- True or false: One planet can be the lord of two houses at the same time.
- Answer: True. Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn each rule two signs, so two houses.
- The Lagna is Aries. Which two houses does Mars rule?
- Answer: 1 and 8. Aries is house 1 and Scorpio is house 8.
- The Lagna is Taurus. Which planet rules houses 1 and 6?
- Answer: Venus. Taurus is house 1 and Libra is house 6.
- True or false: The Sun and Moon each rule only one house in any chart.
- Answer: True. They own one sign each.
What is a house lord (bhavesh)?
Each house holds one sign, and each sign has a ruling planet. That planet becomes the lord (bhavesh or bhavadhipati) of the house. The 7th lord, for example, carries everything about your marriage and partners wherever it goes in the chart.
House lords connect the houses together. If the 10th lord (career) sits in the 4th house (home), career and home become linked: perhaps working from home, real estate or a family business.
How to find any house lord in two steps
- Find the sign on the house. Count from the Lagna sign (house 1).
- Find the lord of that sign using the sign-lord table from Lesson 3.
Example: Gemini Lagna, find the 10th lord. Count Gemini 1, Cancer 2, Leo 3, Virgo 4, Libra 5, Scorpio 6, Sagittarius 7, Capricorn 8, Aquarius 9, Pisces 10. Pisces is ruled by Jupiter, so Jupiter is the 10th lord.

Why some planets rule two houses
The Sun and Moon own one sign each, so they always rule exactly one house. Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn each own two signs, so they always rule two houses. Their results mix the meanings of both houses.
Example: for a Taurus Lagna, Saturn rules Capricorn (house 9, luck) and Aquarius (house 10, career). Ruling a trikona and a kendra at once makes Saturn a yogakaraka for Taurus: the single most beneficial planet for that Lagna. The same is true of Saturn for Libra Lagna (4th and 5th), Mars for Cancer and Leo Lagnas, and Venus for Capricorn and Aquarius Lagnas.
Functional benefics and functional malefics
A planet's nature changes with the houses it rules for your Lagna. This is called functional nature, and it often matters more than whether a planet is naturally benefic or malefic:
- Lords of trikonas (1, 5, 9) are always functional benefics.
- Lords of dusthanas (6, 8, 12) tend to be functional malefics.
- Lords of kendras (4, 7, 10) are neutral; natural benefics owning kendras can lose some of their goodness (kendradhipati dosha).
- A planet owning both a kendra and a trikona is a yogakaraka, the best planet for the chart.
That is why Jupiter, a natural benefic, can be troublesome for a Libra Lagna (it rules the 3rd and 6th), while Saturn, a natural malefic, is the best planet for the same Lagna.
| Lagna | Yogakaraka |
|---|---|
| Taurus | Saturn (9th and 10th) |
| Cancer | Mars (5th and 10th) |
| Leo | Mars (4th and 9th) |
| Libra | Saturn (4th and 5th) |
| Capricorn | Venus (5th and 10th) |
| Aquarius | Venus (4th and 9th) |
Reading a house lord's placement
Where a house lord sits tells you where that house's matters are directed:
- 7th lord in the 10th: spouse connected to your career, or marriage through work.
- 10th lord in the 7th: career through partnerships, business or public dealing.
- 9th lord in the 1st: a lucky person who carries fortune with them.
- 5th lord in the 11th: gains through children, creativity or investments.
- 2nd lord in the 12th: expenses can drain savings; money spent abroad or on spiritual causes.
- Lagna lord in the 6th: a fighter who works hard and serves others, sometimes health issues.
Then add strength: the same lord in an exalted or own sign gives far better results than in a debilitated one.
Worked example
Scorpio Lagna, find and read the 7th and 10th lords:
- House 7 is Taurus, so the 7th lord is Venus. Suppose Venus is in Pisces (exalted) in house 5. Marriage is linked to romance and creativity (5th) and Venus is very strong, so love marriage is likely and the relationship is warm.
- House 10 is Leo, so the 10th lord is the Sun. Suppose the Sun is in Aries in house 6. The career lord in the house of service and competition, and exalted: success through hard work, government service, healthcare or law.
Two quick placements already give a clear picture of relationship and career.
House lords and Raja Yoga
When the lord of a kendra and the lord of a trikona join, aspect each other or exchange signs, they form a Raja Yoga: a combination for success and status. This is the most famous use of house lords. You can check your chart for these combinations with the Raja Yoga calculator or read the full Raja Yoga guide.
Exchange of signs (parivartana yoga)
When two house lords sit in each other's signs, they form a parivartana (exchange) yoga, strongly linking both houses. Example for a Gemini Lagna: Venus (5th lord) in Pisces (the 10th house) and Jupiter (10th lord) in Libra (the 5th house). The 5th and 10th lords have swapped places, so creativity, intelligence and career become tightly bound together, a very good yoga for success.
Exchanges between good houses (kendras and trikonas) are powerful and positive. Exchanges involving the 6th, 8th or 12th bring mixed results with both struggle and gain.
The dispositor chain
Every planet's results depend partly on its dispositor (the lord of the sign it occupies), and that lord depends on its own dispositor, and so on. Following this chain often leads back to one or two planets that quietly control the whole chart. A planet in its own sign ends a chain, because it is its own dispositor. Strong final dispositors tend to make charts more focused and successful.
Key takeaways
- A house lord is the ruler of the sign on that house; find the sign first, then its lord.
- Planets that rule two signs rule two houses and mix their meanings.
- Functional nature (which houses a planet rules for your Lagna) often matters more than natural benefic or malefic nature.
- Kendra and trikona lords working together create Raja Yogas.
Practice: find the lords for your own chart
Use the table above with your own Lagna and answer these four questions:
- Who is my Lagna lord, and which house is it in?
- Who is my 10th lord (career), and is it strong by sign?
- Who is my 7th lord (marriage), and which house is it in?
- Do I have a yogakaraka planet, and where is it?
These four answers already reveal a great deal: your vitality, your career direction, your relationship pattern and your best planet.
Common beginner mistakes
- Taking the house number as the sign. House 7 is the 7th sign from your Lagna, not Libra.
- Ignoring dual lordship. A planet ruling two houses carries both meanings.
- Judging planets only by natural nature. Functional nature for your Lagna often decides the result.
- Forgetting Rahu and Ketu. They rule no house, so they act through the lord of the sign they occupy.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find the lord of a house?
Count from your Lagna to the house to find its sign, then take the planet that rules that sign. For example, the 7th lord for a Scorpio Lagna is Venus, because the 7th sign from Scorpio is Taurus.
What is a yogakaraka planet?
A planet that rules both a kendra (4, 7 or 10) and a trikona (5 or 9) for your Lagna. It is the most beneficial planet in the chart; Saturn is yogakaraka for Taurus and Libra Lagnas.
What happens if the 7th lord is in the 12th house?
It can show a spouse from a distant place or abroad, expenses through marriage, or a spiritual connection with the partner. The overall result depends on the strength of the 7th lord and other factors.
Can a planet be both good and bad in one chart?
Yes. A planet ruling a trikona and a dusthana, such as Jupiter ruling the 9th and 12th for an Aries Lagna, gives mixed results: blessings and expenses together.
Which house lord is most important?
The Lagna lord, because it represents you and your vitality. After it, the lords of the trikonas (5th and 9th) and the 10th are the most influential.
What is kendradhipati dosha?
When a natural benefic (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury or the Moon) rules a kendra (houses 4, 7 or 10), it can lose some of its natural goodness for that chart. This is called kendradhipati dosha. It is strongest for Jupiter and Mercury ruling two kendras, as happens for Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces Lagnas.
