Planets in Houses: How to Read Placements
Lesson 7 of AstroWord's free Vedic astrology course · about 5 minutes · Parashari system, Lahiri ayanamsa
By AstroWord · Updated 4 November 2026 · Based on Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra
Planet = who. Sign = how. House = where in your life. Put them together and the chart starts talking.
Lesson notes
- To find a planet's house, count from the Lagna sign (house 1) to the planet's sign. Example: Aries Lagna, Moon in Leo - Aries 1, Taurus 2, Gemini 3, Cancer 4, Leo 5. The Moon is in house 5.
- A planet brings its nature to the area of life of its house. Mars (courage, energy) in house 10 (career) = drive at work. Moon (mind) in house 4 (home) = a mind tied to home and mother.
Practice questions and answers

- Answer: Career. Mars = drive, house 10 = work.
- The Moon sits in house 4. Which area does it colour?
- Answer: Home and mother. Moon (mind) in house 4 (home).

- Answer: True. House 7 = spouse and partners.
- Venus (love, comforts) in house 2 links love with...?
- Answer: Wealth and speech. House 2 = wealth, family and speech.
- In this chart, which house is the Sun (Su) in?
- Answer: 1. Su is in the top diamond - house 1.
The three-part formula: who, how, where
Every placement in a chart can be read with one sentence:
- Planet = who acts (the energy).
- Sign = how it acts (the style).
- House = where in your life it acts (the arena).
So "Venus in Gemini in the 10th house" reads: love, beauty and harmony (Venus) expressed in a curious, communicative way (Gemini) in the area of career and reputation (10th). That could describe someone working in media, design, fashion or communication.
How to find a planet's house
- Find your Lagna sign. That is house 1.
- Find the planet's sign.
- Count from the Lagna sign to the planet's sign, counting the Lagna as 1.
Example with a Sagittarius Lagna and Saturn in Pisces: Sagittarius 1, Capricorn 2, Aquarius 3, Pisces 4. Saturn is in house 4 (home, mother, peace of mind).
In a North Indian chart you can skip the counting: the box position already tells you the house.
What each planet does in each house
The table below gives a short, practical meaning for the most commonly asked placements. Results always depend on sign and strength too.
| Planet | Good houses (generally) | In house 1 | In house 4 | In house 7 | In house 10 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|

Why malefics do well in houses 3, 6, 10 and 11
Houses 3, 6, 10 and 11 are the upachaya houses: houses of growth through effort, competition and persistence. Malefic planets (Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu) bring pressure and drive, which is exactly what these houses need.
- Mars in the 6th beats enemies and illness.
- Saturn in the 11th gives slow but lasting gains.
- Rahu in the 3rd gives fearless communication and media success.
Benefics are generally happiest in kendras (1, 4, 7, 10) and trikonas (1, 5, 9).
Planets in the difficult houses 6, 8 and 12
The dusthanas are where planets find it hardest to give comfortable results. But "difficult" does not mean hopeless:
- 6th house: problems you can fight and win: competition, illness you recover from, service work, law.
- 8th house: hidden and sudden matters: research, inheritance, insurance, the occult, deep transformation.
- 12th house: letting go: expenses, foreign lands, hospitals, ashrams, meditation and sleep.
A Jupiter in the 12th house, for example, can give generosity, spiritual interests and life abroad.
Worked example: three placements in one chart
Take a Cancer Lagna with these planets:
- Moon in Cancer (house 1): the Lagna lord in its own sign in the Lagna. Strong, caring, emotionally intelligent personality.
- Mars in Aries (house 10): Mars in its own sign in the career house. Very strong drive at work; a natural for leadership, engineering, defence or sport.
- Saturn in Sagittarius (house 6): a malefic in an upachaya house. Defeats competitors through patience; good for service, law or healthcare.
Even before any advanced technique, these three placements tell a clear story: a caring person with a powerful career drive who wins through steady effort.
Combining planets in the same house (conjunctions)
When two or more planets share a house they blend their natures:
- Sun + Mercury (Budhaditya yoga): intelligence and recognition.
- Moon + Jupiter (Gaja Kesari when in mutual kendras; here together): wisdom and emotional strength.
- Mars + Saturn: frustration and conflict unless well placed; strong engineers and surgeons often have it.
- Venus + Saturn: loyal, mature love; artistic discipline.
The stronger planet usually leads the conjunction, so always check each planet's dignity.
Aspects: planets also "look" at other houses
A planet affects not just its own house but the houses it aspects (drishti). Every planet aspects the 7th house from itself. Three planets have special extra aspects:
- Mars: 4th, 7th and 8th from itself.
- Jupiter: 5th, 7th and 9th from itself.
- Saturn: 3rd, 7th and 10th from itself.
- Rahu and Ketu: many astrologers also give them the 5th and 9th.
So Jupiter in the 1st house aspects the 5th, 7th and 9th houses, blessing children, marriage and luck at once.
Planets in the 5th, 9th and 11th houses
Three more houses beginners ask about constantly:
- 5th house (children, intelligence, romance): Jupiter here is excellent for children and learning; Venus for romance and creativity; Saturn can delay children but gives serious, deep study; Rahu can give unconventional thinking and interest in speculation.
- 9th house (luck, father, dharma): Jupiter or the Sun here strengthen faith, fortune and the father; Saturn gives a practical approach to religion and sometimes distance from the father; Rahu can draw a person towards foreign cultures or unorthodox beliefs.
- 11th house (gains, friends): almost every planet gives gains here. The Sun brings income from authority, Mercury from business and communication, Saturn steady long-term income, Rahu sudden large gains.
Planets in houses for transits too
The same counting is used for transits. If Jupiter today is in the sign that is your 7th house, astrologers say "Jupiter is transiting your 7th", and they read it as Jupiter's blessings flowing to partnership for that year. You will use this constantly in Unit 4, where transits are counted mainly from the Moon sign.
Key takeaways
- Count from the Lagna sign (as 1) to the planet's sign to find its house.
- Planet = who, sign = how, house = where in life.
- Malefics thrive in houses 3, 6, 10 and 11; benefics are happiest in kendras and trikonas.
- Conjunctions blend planets, and aspects let a planet influence houses it does not occupy.
Practice: read placements in your own chart
Take your own chart (or any chart) and write one sentence per planet using the formula planet = who, sign = how, house = where. For example:
- "My Mercury (thinking, speaking) is in Virgo (precise, analytical) in the 6th house (work, service, problem-solving)." That could describe an analyst, editor or doctor.
- "My Saturn (discipline, delay) is in Pisces (compassion, imagination) in the 9th house (dharma, teachers)." That suggests a serious, practical approach to spirituality and learning that matures with age.
- "My Venus (love, beauty) is in Scorpio (intense, private) in the 2nd house (family, speech, wealth)." That can show deep loyalty in love and earnings from beauty, luxury or finance.
Nine sentences give you a first draft of a whole chart reading. As you learn more (strength, house lords, aspects) you simply add detail to each sentence.
Planets in houses and the D9 chart
A placement that looks weak in the main chart can be rescued by the same planet's position in the D9 Navamsa chart, and a placement that looks strong can disappoint if the planet is weak in the Navamsa. That is why serious readings always check both. You can view your Navamsa with the free D9 chart calculator.
Common beginner mistakes
- Counting from house 0. Always count the Lagna sign as 1.
- Reading a placement without its sign. Saturn in the 7th in Libra (exalted) is very different from Saturn in the 7th in Aries (debilitated).
- Fearing malefics everywhere. In houses 3, 6, 10 and 11 they are often the best thing in the chart.
- Forgetting aspects. A house with no planets can still be strongly affected by planets aspecting it.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find which house a planet is in?
Count from your Lagna sign to the planet's sign, counting the Lagna as house 1. In a North Indian chart, the position of the box shows the house directly.
Which house is best for Jupiter?
Jupiter does very well in kendras (1, 4, 7, 10) and trikonas (1, 5, 9), and it is traditionally strongest in the 1st house. Its aspects on the 5th, 7th and 9th from itself are also beneficial.
Is Saturn in the 7th house bad for marriage?
Not necessarily. It often shows a later, more serious or mature marriage. If Saturn is strong (for example exalted in Libra), the marriage can be very stable.
What does an empty house mean?
It simply has no planets in it. Its matters are judged from the house lord and any planets aspecting it.
What are upachaya houses?
Houses 3, 6, 10 and 11. They improve over time and with effort, and malefic planets placed there usually give good results.
Which planet in which house gives wealth?
Look at the 2nd house (savings) and 11th house (gains) and their lords. Jupiter or Venus in the 2nd or 11th, a strong 11th lord, and connections between the lords of 2, 5, 9 and 11 (called Dhana yogas) are classic wealth indicators. Malefics such as Saturn or Rahu in the 11th also give large gains over time.
Does a planet give results only in its own house?
No. It gives results for the house it occupies, the houses it rules and the houses it aspects, and it delivers them most strongly during its own dasha.
