How to Read a North Indian Birth Chart
Lesson 6 of AstroWord's free Vedic astrology course · about 5 minutes · Parashari system, Lahiri ayanamsa
By AstroWord · Updated 4 November 2026 · Based on Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra
This is a North Indian chart. The diamond at the top is always house 1, and the houses go anticlockwise. The numbers inside are sign numbers, not house numbers!
Lesson notes
- The four big diamonds are the kendras: Top - house 1 Left - house 4 Bottom - house 7 Right - house 10
- Charts write planets as short names: Su = Sun, Mo = Moon, Ma = Mars Me = Mercury, Ju = Jupiter, Ve = Venus Sa = Saturn, Ra = Rahu, Ke = Ketu
Practice questions and answers
- True or false: In a North Indian chart, the numbers show the sign, not the house.
- Answer: True. 5 means Leo, wherever it appears.
- House 1 shows the number 5. What is the Lagna?
- Answer: Leo. Sign 5 = Leo.
- House 7 shows the number 1. What is the Lagna?
- Answer: Libra. House 7 is Aries, so the opposite sign, Libra, is rising.
- House 1 shows 10. Which sign is house 4?
- Answer: Aries. Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries.
- A house shows "Ma". Which planet is that?
- Answer: Mars. Short names: Su Mo Ma Me Ju Ve Sa Ra Ke.
- Match the short names
- Answer: Su = Sun; Me = Mercury; Sa = Saturn; Ra = Rahu. You can read every label now.
The three chart styles used in India
Indian astrologers draw the same information in three different styles:
| Style | Where it is used | What is fixed | Shape |
|---|---|---|---|
| North Indian | North and central India, Nepal | Houses (house 1 always top centre) | Diamond |
| South Indian | South India, Sri Lanka | Signs (Pisces always top left) | Square grid |
| East Indian | Bengal, Odisha | Signs | Square with triangles |
All three show identical planetary positions; only the drawing differs. AstroWord and this course use the North Indian style because it makes the houses easiest to see.
How to read a North Indian chart, step by step
- Find house 1. It is the diamond at the top centre. Whatever number is written there is your Lagna sign.
- Read the number in each box. These are sign numbers. If house 1 shows 7, your Lagna is Libra.
- Walk anticlockwise. From the top diamond, move to the top-left triangle (house 2), then the triangle below it (house 3), then the left diamond (house 4), and so on.
- Note the planets in each box. The abbreviations tell you which planet is in which house and sign.
The four big diamonds are the kendras: top is house 1, left is house 4, bottom is house 7 and right is house 10. The kendras are the strongest positions in the chart, so astrologers glance at these four diamonds first.
Planet abbreviations
| Abbreviation | Planet | Sanskrit |
|---|---|---|
| Su | Sun | Surya |
| Mo | Moon | Chandra |
| Ma | Mars | Mangal |
| Me | Mercury | Budha |
| Ju | Jupiter | Guru |
| Ve | Venus | Shukra |
| Sa | Saturn | Shani |
| Ra | Rahu | Rahu |
| Ke | Ketu | Ketu |
| As or La | Ascendant | Lagna |
You may also see an "R" or "(R)" after a planet, meaning it was retrograde at birth, and sometimes degrees, such as "Ju 14°".
Sign numbers vs house numbers: the classic confusion
The single most common beginner mistake is reading the number in a box as the house number. Remember:
- The position of a box tells you the house. The top diamond is always house 1.
- The number inside the box tells you the sign. A 4 means Cancer, a 10 means Capricorn.
So if the top diamond contains 11, your Lagna is Aquarius (sign 11), the next box anticlockwise contains 12 (Pisces) as house 2, then 1 (Aries) as house 3, and so on.
Worked example: reading a full chart
Imagine a North Indian chart with these entries:
| House (position) | Number in box | Sign | Planets |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (top diamond) | 5 | Leo | Su, Me |
| 2 | 6 | Virgo | Ve |
| 4 (left diamond) | 8 | Scorpio | Ma |
| 7 (bottom diamond) | 11 | Aquarius | Sa |
| 9 | 1 | Aries | Mo |
| 10 (right diamond) | 2 | Taurus | Ju |
| 11 | 3 | Gemini | Ra |
| 5 | 9 | Sagittarius | Ke |
Reading it:
- Lagna: Leo, so the Lagna lord is the Sun, and the Sun sits in house 1 in its own sign: a confident, strong personality.
- Moon: in Aries in house 9 (luck, father, dharma).
- Mars: in its own sign Scorpio in house 4 (home, property): good for land and real estate.
- Jupiter: in Taurus in house 10 (career): respected work, teaching or advisory roles.
- Saturn: in its own sign Aquarius in house 7 (marriage, partners): a serious, committed approach to partnership, possibly a later marriage.
- Rahu and Ketu: in houses 11 and 5, exactly opposite each other as always.
This is exactly what a Vedic astrologer does in the first minute of looking at a chart.
How to read a South Indian chart (for comparison)
In a South Indian chart the twelve boxes run around a square. The signs never move: Pisces is always the top-left box, Aries next to it, then Taurus, and the signs continue clockwise. The Lagna is marked inside whichever box it falls in, usually with "As", "La" or a diagonal line.
To find house 1 you look for the Lagna marker, then count clockwise. It is equally valid; it just puts the signs in charge of the layout instead of the houses.
Rasi chart vs divisional charts
The chart you have been reading is the D1 or Rasi chart, the main birth chart. Vedic astrology also uses divisional charts (vargas), which divide each sign into smaller parts:
- D9 Navamsa: marriage, inner strength and the second half of life. See the free D9 chart calculator.
- D10 Dashamsa: career in detail.
- D2, D3, D7, D12, D60 and others for wealth, siblings, children, parents and past karma.
All of them are drawn in the same North Indian style, so once you can read the D1 you can read any of them.
Why does house 1 sit at the top?
In the North Indian chart, the top diamond represents the eastern horizon where the Lagna rises. The chart is a picture of the sky with east at the top: houses 1 to 6 below the horizon and 7 to 12 above it, arranged anticlockwise just as the signs rise in the east. That is why the kendras sit at the four cardinal points of the square.
Reading planet degrees and extra symbols
Many software charts add more detail next to each planet:
- Degrees: "Ma 23°14'" means Mars is at 23 degrees 14 minutes of its sign. Planets near 0° or 29° are at the edge of a sign and considered weaker (gandanta zones at water-fire junctions are especially sensitive).
- R or (R): retrograde at birth.
- C or (C): combust, meaning the planet is very close to the Sun and its light is hidden.
- An up arrow or "Ex": exalted. A down arrow or "Deb": debilitated.
- Nakshatra names: some charts list the nakshatra and pada of each planet, which you will use in Unit 3.
None of these change the house or sign; they describe the condition of the planet.
A 60-second chart scan
Experienced astrologers often run through the same quick checklist on every new chart:
- Lagna sign and Lagna lord: where is it and how strong?
- Moon sign, house and strength: how is the mind?
- Planets in the four kendras: who holds the pillars?
- Lords of houses 9 and 10: are they connected (a Raja Yoga for career and luck)?
- Any planets exalted or debilitated?
- Rahu and Ketu: which axis (1-7, 2-8, 3-9, 4-10, 5-11 or 6-12) do they fall on?
- Which mahadasha is running now?
By the end of this course you will be able to do every step of this scan yourself.
Key takeaways
- In a North Indian chart, house positions are fixed and signs move; the top diamond is always house 1.
- Houses run anticlockwise; the four big diamonds are the kendras 1, 4, 7 and 10.
- Numbers in the boxes are sign numbers, not house numbers.
- Planet codes (Su, Mo, Ma, Me, Ju, Ve, Sa, Ra, Ke) tell you which graha sits in each house.
Practice: turn a list of positions into a chart
Being able to draw a chart from a list is the best test that you understand the layout. Try this one on paper:
- Lagna: Sagittarius (9)
- Sun and Mercury: Libra (7)
- Moon: Pisces (12)
- Mars: Capricorn (10)
- Jupiter: Cancer (4)
- Venus: Virgo (6)
- Saturn: Aquarius (11)
- Rahu: Gemini (3), Ketu: Sagittarius (9)
Steps: write 9 in the top diamond, then 10, 11, 12, 1, 2 and so on anticlockwise. Place each planet in the box with its sign number. You should end up with Ketu in house 1 (with the Lagna), Mars in house 2, Saturn in house 3, the Moon in house 4, Jupiter in house 8, Venus in house 10, the Sun and Mercury in house 11 and Rahu in house 7. Notice that Rahu and Ketu sit in opposite diamonds, top and bottom, exactly as they should.
Why learning the layout pays off
Once the North Indian layout is automatic, you stop counting and start seeing. You glance at the right diamond and know it is the career house; you see two planets in the bottom diamond and know they affect marriage. Every advanced technique in Vedic astrology, from yogas to dashas to transits, assumes you can do this instantly, so it is worth practising with a few real charts, including your own.
Common beginner mistakes
- Reading the box number as the house. Always count position from the top diamond.
- Counting clockwise. North Indian houses run anticlockwise.
- Forgetting Rahu and Ketu are always opposite. If they are not seven houses apart, the chart has an error.
- Mixing chart styles. Do not apply South Indian rules (fixed signs) to a North Indian chart.
Frequently asked questions
How do I read a North Indian birth chart?
Start from the top diamond, which is always house 1, and move anticlockwise. The number in each box is the sign, and the abbreviations show which planets sit there.
What do the numbers in a kundli mean?
They are sign numbers: 1 is Aries, 2 Taurus, 3 Gemini, and so on up to 12 Pisces. The house is shown by the position of the box, not the number.
What is the difference between North and South Indian charts?
In North Indian charts the houses are fixed and the signs move; in South Indian charts the signs are fixed and the houses move. Both contain identical information.
What does (R) mean next to a planet?
It means the planet was retrograde (vakri) at birth: appearing to move backwards from Earth. Lesson 27 explains retrograde planets.
Where can I see my own North Indian chart?
Enter your birth details on the AstroWord home page or any calculator such as the Lagna calculator; your chart is drawn in the North Indian style.
Why do some charts show planets in different houses than others?
Usually because the birth time differs slightly (changing the Lagna), a different ayanamsa was used, or a different house system was applied. AstroWord uses whole-sign houses with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the most common standard in India. If two charts disagree, compare the Lagna degree first.
Can I learn to read charts without memorising everything?
Yes. Start with the layout, the nine planet codes and the twelve sign numbers. Everything else (lords, strength, dashas) builds on these three, and regular practice with a few real charts makes them automatic within a couple of weeks.
