Lesson 5 of AstroWord's free Vedic astrology course · about 5 minutes · Parashari system, Lahiri ayanamsa

By AstroWord · Updated 4 November 2026 · Based on Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra

The 12 houses (bhavas) in Vedic astrology are the twelve areas of life in a birth chart, counted from the Lagna: 1 self and body, 2 wealth and speech, 3 courage and siblings, 4 home and mother, 5 children and intellect, 6 enemies, illness and service, 7 marriage and partners, 8 longevity and sudden change, 9 luck, father and dharma, 10 career, 11 gains and friends, 12 expenses, loss and liberation. In the whole-sign system each house is one complete sign, starting with the Lagna sign as house 1.

Houses are the areas of your life. Your Lagna sign is house 1, the next sign is house 2, and so on round the zodiac.

Lesson notes

What is a house (bhava)?

Signs describe how energy behaves; houses describe where in your life it shows up. A house (bhava) is one twelfth of the chart, and each one rules a group of related life matters, people and body parts.

In the whole-sign house system used in this course (and in AstroWord's charts), each house is one full sign. Your Lagna sign is house 1, the next sign is house 2, and so on round the zodiac. So for a Gemini Lagna, Gemini is house 1, Cancer is house 2, Leo is house 3, and Taurus is house 12.

The 12 houses and their meanings

HouseSanskrit nameMain meaningsNatural karaka (significator)
1Tanu bhavaSelf, body, health, personality, life directionSun
2Dhana bhavaWealth, family, speech, food, face, early educationJupiter
3Sahaja bhavaCourage, younger siblings, effort, communication, short trips, skillsMars
4Sukha bhavaMother, home, happiness, vehicles, land, inner peaceMoon
5Putra bhavaChildren, intelligence, creativity, romance, past merit (purva punya)Jupiter
6Ari bhavaEnemies, disease, debts, competition, service, daily workMars, Saturn
7Kalatra bhavaSpouse, marriage, partners, business deals, the publicVenus
8Ayu bhavaLongevity, sudden events, secrets, inheritance, research, transformationSaturn
9Dharma bhavaLuck, father, gurus, religion, higher learning, long journeysJupiter, Sun
10Karma bhavaCareer, status, actions, reputation, authoritySun, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn
11Labha bhavaGains, income, elder siblings, friends, fulfilled wishesJupiter
12Vyaya bhavaExpenses, losses, sleep, foreign lands, isolation, mokshaSaturn

The natural karaka is the planet that naturally signifies a house's matters for everyone. Jupiter, for example, signifies children for every chart, which is why astrologers look at both the 5th house and Jupiter when judging children.

House groups every beginner should know

Houses are grouped by how they behave. These groups appear in almost every chart reading:

GroupHousesMeaning
Kendras (angles)1, 4, 7, 10The pillars of the chart: strength, stability and action
Trikonas (trines)1, 5, 9Luck, merit and blessings; the most auspicious houses
Dusthanas (difficult houses)6, 8, 12Struggle, illness, loss and hidden matters
Upachayas (growing houses)3, 6, 10, 11Improve with time and effort; malefics do well here
Marakas (death-inflicting)2, 7Used for longevity calculations

House 1 is both a kendra and a trikona, which is why it is the most important house of all.

The four aims of life: dharma, artha, kama, moksha

Vedic philosophy describes four aims of human life, and the houses map onto them in a neat pattern of triangles:

  • Dharma (purpose, duty): houses 1, 5, 9.
  • Artha (wealth, work): houses 2, 6, 10.
  • Kama (desire, relationships): houses 3, 7, 11.
  • Moksha (liberation, letting go): houses 4, 8, 12.

This shows something important: even the "difficult" houses 8 and 12 have a spiritual side. The 12th house is loss, but it is also meditation, retreat and final liberation.

House 7 is always opposite your Lagna

Because there are twelve houses, house 7 always falls on the sign directly opposite the Lagna. If your Lagna is Aries, house 7 is Libra; if it is Cancer, house 7 is Capricorn.

This makes sense: house 1 is you, and house 7 is the "other": your spouse, partners and the people you deal with one to one. Each pair of opposite houses works as an axis: 1-7 (self and other), 2-8 (own money and shared money), 3-9 (own effort and fortune), 4-10 (home and career), 5-11 (creation and gains), 6-12 (service and surrender).

How to count the houses: a worked example

Take a Virgo Lagna and count around the zodiac:

HouseSign
1Virgo
2Libra
3Scorpio
4Sagittarius
5Capricorn
6Aquarius
7Pisces
8Aries
9Taurus
10Gemini
11Cancer
12Leo

Now suppose Jupiter is in Taurus. Taurus is house 9 for a Virgo Lagna, so Jupiter (wisdom, teachers) sits in the house of luck, father and higher learning: a classic sign of good fortune and respect for gurus.

You can check any chart this way: find the Lagna sign, count forward to the planet's sign, and you have its house.

Houses vs signs: what is the difference?

Signs are fixed sections of the sky, the same for everyone. Houses are personal: they depend on your Lagna, and therefore on your birth time and place.

Two people born on the same day may have their planets in the same signs, but if their Lagnas differ, those planets fall in different houses and affect different parts of life. That is why your house positions are far more personal than your signs.

How astrologers judge a house

To read any house, a Vedic astrologer looks at four things:

  1. The sign on the house and its element and nature.
  2. The house lord: where it sits and how strong it is (Lesson 8).
  3. Planets in the house and whether they are benefics or malefics.
  4. Aspects: which planets look at the house. Every planet aspects the 7th house from itself; Mars also aspects the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, and Saturn the 3rd and 10th.

A house with a strong lord, benefic planets and good aspects flourishes. A house with a weak lord and malefic pressure struggles, though malefics in upachaya houses (3, 6, 10, 11) are an exception: there they help.

Empty houses are not bad

Many beginners worry when a house has no planets. An empty house simply means no planet is sitting there; its matters are judged from its lord and aspects. With nine planets and twelve houses, at least three houses are always empty in every chart.

Houses and the people in your life

Every relative and important person in your life has a house. This is how astrologers answer questions about family members:

PersonHouse
You1st
Younger siblings3rd
Mother4th
Children5th
Maternal uncles, enemies, pets6th
Spouse, business partner7th
In-laws (spouse's family)8th
Father, guru9th (some traditions also use the 10th)
Boss, employer10th
Elder siblings, friends11th

A technique called bhavat bhavam ("house from house") extends this: the 3rd from the 7th (your 9th house) shows your spouse's siblings, and the 4th from the 4th (your 7th) adds detail about the mother's happiness.

Houses and the body

Each house also rules part of the body, following the same head-to-feet pattern as the signs: house 1 the head, house 2 the face and mouth, house 3 the arms and shoulders, house 4 the chest, house 5 the stomach, house 6 the intestines, house 7 the lower abdomen, house 8 the reproductive and excretory organs, house 9 the hips and thighs, house 10 the knees, house 11 the calves and ankles, and house 12 the feet. Medical astrology reads afflictions to these houses alongside the signs on them.

Key takeaways

  • The 12 houses are the areas of life, counted from your Lagna sign as house 1.
  • Kendras (1, 4, 7, 10) are pillars, trikonas (1, 5, 9) bring luck, dusthanas (6, 8, 12) bring difficulty and upachayas (3, 6, 10, 11) improve with effort.
  • House 7 always falls opposite the Lagna and shows partners.
  • Judge a house by its sign, its lord, the planets in it and the planets aspecting it.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Confusing house numbers with sign numbers. House 5 is the fifth house from your Lagna, not the sign Leo.
  • Panicking about the 8th or 12th house. Planets there bring research, depth, foreign connections and spirituality as well as challenges.
  • Ignoring the house lord. An empty 7th house with a strong 7th lord can give an excellent marriage.
  • Mixing house systems. Whole-sign houses, used here, are standard in Parashari astrology. Other systems (such as Placidus or Sripati) can place planets in different houses.

Frequently asked questions
