Dhana means wealth. Dhana yogas show how money comes into a life. Let's find the houses of wealth.
Lesson notes
- The wealth houses: 2nd - savings and family wealth 11th - income and gains 5th and 9th - luck, which helps wealth grow 1st - you, the one who earns
- A Dhana yoga forms when the lords of houses 1, 2, 5, 9 and 11 join each other - by conjunction, aspect or exchange. Classic example: the 2nd lord and 11th lord together.
- Lakshmi yoga, named after the goddess of wealth, forms when the 9th lord is strong - in its own or exaltation sign, in a kendra or trikona - and the Lagna lord is strong too.
- Jupiter is the natural karaka (significator) of wealth, and Venus brings luxury and comfort. A strong Jupiter supports every Dhana yoga.

The houses of wealth
| House | Sanskrit name | Wealth role |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Tanu bhava | You, your health and capacity to earn |
| 2nd | Dhana bhava | Savings, family wealth, assets, speech |
| 5th | Putra bhava | Intelligence, speculation, past merit (purva punya) |
| 9th | Bhagya bhava | Fortune, blessings, father's support |
| 11th | Labha bhava | Income, gains, profits, networks |
| 10th | Karma bhava | Career and the work that earns money |
The 2nd and 11th are the main dhana houses; the 5th and 9th are the luck houses that help wealth grow; the 1st is the person who must be strong enough to receive it.
How a Dhana yoga forms
Parashara's rule: when the lords of the 1st, 2nd, 5th, 9th and 11th houses are mutually connected, the person becomes wealthy. Common forms:
| Combination | Typical result |
|---|---|
| 2nd lord and 11th lord together or exchanging signs | Steady income that is saved and grows |
| 5th lord and 9th lord connected with the 2nd or 11th | Luck, investments and wise decisions bring money |
| Lagna lord in the 2nd or 11th, or with their lords | Self-earned wealth |
| 2nd or 11th lord in a kendra or trikona, strong | Reliable wealth |
| Jupiter strong and linked with the 2nd, 5th, 9th or 11th | Wealth with wisdom and generosity |
Dhana yoga lords for each Lagna
| Lagna | 2nd lord | 11th lord | 5th lord | 9th lord |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Venus | Saturn | Sun | Jupiter |
| Taurus | Mercury | Jupiter | Mercury | Saturn |
| Gemini | Moon | Mars | Venus | Saturn |
| Cancer | Sun | Venus | Mars | Jupiter |
| Leo | Mercury | Mercury | Jupiter | Mars |
| Virgo | Venus | Moon | Saturn | Venus |
| Libra | Mars | Sun | Saturn | Mercury |
| Scorpio | Jupiter | Mercury | Jupiter | Moon |
| Sagittarius | Saturn | Venus | Mars | Sun |
| Capricorn | Saturn | Mars | Venus | Mercury |
| Aquarius | Jupiter | Jupiter | Mercury | Venus |
| Pisces | Mars | Saturn | Moon | Mars |
Notice that for Leo Lagna, Mercury rules both the 2nd and the 11th, and for Aquarius Lagna Jupiter rules both. A strong Mercury (Leo) or Jupiter (Aquarius) is itself a powerful wealth indicator for those Lagnas.
Lakshmi yoga
BPHS describes Lakshmi yoga in more than one way. A widely used version: the 9th lord is strong (in its own or exaltation sign) and placed in a kendra or trikona, and the Lagna lord is also strong. The person is said to be wealthy, noble, learned and respected. Because it depends on the 9th lord, Lakshmi yoga links money with good fortune and dharma.
Other famous wealth combinations
| Yoga | Formation (simplified) | Promise |
|---|---|---|
| Chandra-Mangala yoga | Moon and Mars together | Earning through enterprise and trade |
| Vasumati yoga | Benefics in upachayas (3, 6, 10, 11) from the Lagna or Moon | Growing prosperity |
| Kubera-type combinations | Strong 2nd, 9th and 11th lords with Jupiter | Large and lasting wealth |
| Parivartana between 2nd and 11th lords | Exchange of signs | Income and savings support each other |
What spoils a Dhana yoga
- Lords in dusthanas. A 2nd or 11th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th tends to bring income with debts, sudden losses or high expenses.
- The 12th lord joining the yoga. Money comes but goes out quickly.
- Debilitation or combustion without cancellation.
- Rahu or Ketu on the yoga can bring sudden gains and sudden losses.
Jupiter and Venus: the wealth significators
Jupiter (Guru) is the natural dhana karaka, the significator of wealth, wisdom and expansion. Venus (Shukra) adds luxury, comfort, vehicles and refined tastes. A strong Jupiter supports every Dhana yoga; a weak or afflicted Jupiter can make even good combinations underperform. Venus strong in the 2nd, 4th or 11th often shows comfort and beautiful possessions.
Timing wealth
Wealth yogas deliver during the dashas of the planets forming them. A practical approach:
- List the 2nd, 5th, 9th and 11th lords for your Lagna.
- Mark their mahadashas and antardashas on your dasha timeline.
- Watch for Jupiter transiting the 2nd or 11th house from the Lagna or Moon during those periods.
Worked example
Virgo Lagna. Venus (2nd and 9th lord) is exalted in Pisces in the 7th house, with Mercury (Lagna and 10th lord). The Moon (11th lord) is in Taurus in the 9th.
- Venus, ruling the 2nd and 9th, exalted in a kendra: a powerful wealth and fortune indicator (close to Lakshmi yoga).
- Mercury (1st lord) with Venus: the Lagna lord joins the wealth lord, but Mercury is debilitated in Pisces. Venus, exalted in Pisces, sits with it, which is one of the conditions often read as Neecha Bhanga (Lesson 40).
- The Moon (11th lord) in the 9th, exalted: gains through fortune, travel or higher learning.
Prediction: strong wealth potential, especially in Venus and Moon periods, perhaps through partnership or business (7th house).
Key takeaways
- Dhana yogas link the lords of the 1st, 2nd, 5th, 9th and 11th houses.
- The 2nd (savings) and 11th (income) are the core wealth houses.
- Jupiter is the natural significator of wealth; Venus adds comfort.
- Dusthana placements and the 12th lord can drain a wealth yoga.
Dhana yoga by the house where it forms
| House | How money tends to come |
|---|---|
| 1st | Through one's own personality and effort |
| 2nd | Family wealth, savings, food, speech-based work, finance |
| 4th | Property, land, vehicles, education-related work |
| 5th | Investments, speculation, intelligence, children's success |
| 7th | Business partnerships, trade, the spouse |
| 9th | Fortune, father, foreign links, teaching or law |
| 10th | Career income, status-based earnings |
| 11th | Large and regular gains, networks, elder siblings |
Signs of wealth leaks: Daridra yoga
The opposite of Dhana yoga is Daridra yoga (poverty combination). A common definition is the 11th lord (gains) placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th house. Other signs of money leaking away include the 2nd lord in the 12th, the 12th lord strong in the 2nd or 11th, and Rahu in the 2nd without benefic support. These are tendencies to manage, through budgeting and caution, rather than fixed outcomes, and they are often offset by strong Dhana yogas elsewhere.
Sources of wealth by planet
| Planet linked with the 2nd or 11th | Common source of income |
|---|---|
| Sun | Government, authority, medicine, father |
| Moon | Public dealings, food, liquids, travel, nursing |
| Mars | Property, engineering, police, sport, surgery |
| Mercury | Trade, writing, accounting, IT, communication |
| Jupiter | Teaching, finance, law, advice, religion |
| Venus | Arts, fashion, luxury, hospitality, vehicles |
| Saturn | Labour-intensive work, manufacturing, mining, service, real estate |
| Rahu | Foreign trade, technology, speculation, unusual fields |
| Ketu | Research, spirituality, occult sciences, sudden windfalls |
Practice: find your wealth lords
- Write your Lagna and count to the 2nd, 5th, 9th and 11th signs.
- Note the lord of each sign using the sign-lord table from Unit 1.
- Find where each lord sits and whether any two are together, in each other's signs or aspecting each other.
- Rate each lord's dignity and check whether any sits in the 6th, 8th or 12th.
- Mark their mahadashas with the dasha calculator; these are your main wealth periods.
Even one strong connection between the 2nd and 11th lords, or between the Lagna lord and the 9th lord, is a meaningful Dhana yoga.
Wealth is a combination, not a single factor
No single house or planet decides wealth. Astrologers look at the whole chain: the Lagna lord's strength (the capacity to earn), the 10th house (career), the 11th (income), the 2nd (savings), the 5th and 9th (luck and wise choices) and the 12th (spending). A chart with a modest 11th house but a strong 2nd may save steadily; one with a strong 11th but an active 12th may earn well and spend just as freely. Reading them together gives a far more accurate picture than any single yoga.
Common beginner mistakes
- Reading only the 2nd house. Income (11th), luck (9th) and intelligence (5th) matter too.
- Ignoring the 12th house. High expenses can cancel high income.
- Forgetting the Lagna lord. A weak Lagna lord struggles to hold wealth.
- Expecting instant riches. Wealth yogas work through their dashas.
Frequently asked questions
What is Dhan yoga in kundli?
A combination where the lords of the wealth houses (1st, 2nd, 5th, 9th, 11th) are connected by conjunction, aspect or exchange, promising money and prosperity.
Which house is responsible for money in astrology?
The 2nd house (savings and family wealth) and the 11th house (income and gains), supported by the 5th and 9th houses of luck and the 10th house of career.
Which planet gives wealth in astrology?
Jupiter is the natural significator of wealth. Venus brings luxury and comfort. In your own chart, the lords of the 2nd and 11th houses are the key wealth planets.
What is Lakshmi yoga?
A wealth yoga in which a strong 9th lord occupies a kendra or trikona and the Lagna lord is strong, promising wealth, learning and good fortune.
When will I become rich according to astrology?
Usually during the dashas of your strong 2nd, 9th or 11th lords, or of planets forming Dhana yogas, especially when Jupiter transits your 2nd or 11th house.
What is Daridra yoga?
A combination for financial difficulty, commonly defined as the 11th lord placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th house. It is often offset by Dhana yogas and careful money management.
Can Dhana yoga be in a woman's chart?
Yes. Dhana yogas work the same way in every chart and show the person's own earning and saving capacity.
Does Jupiter in the 2nd house give wealth?
Jupiter in the 2nd is traditionally a good sign for family wealth, savings and wise speech, especially when it is strong by sign and not afflicted.
Can Dhana yoga be cancelled?
It is weakened when its planets are debilitated, combust or placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, or when the 12th lord is strongly involved. It is rarely cancelled completely if the lords are well placed.
