Five planets, five great personalities. The Pancha Mahapurusha yogas are some of the most famous in astrology.
Lesson notes
- Pancha = five, Mahapurusha = great person. Each yoga forms when one planet - Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn - sits in its own or exaltation sign AND in a kendra (1, 4, 7, 10) from the Lagna.
- The five yogas: Ruchaka - Mars Bhadra - Mercury Hamsa - Jupiter Malavya - Venus Shasha - Saturn
- What each gives: Ruchaka - courage, leadership Bhadra - intellect, speech, business Hamsa - wisdom, virtue, respect Malavya - beauty, comfort, art Shasha - discipline, authority over people
Practice questions and answers
- What two conditions form a Mahapurusha yoga?
- Answer: Own or exalted sign, in a kendra. Strong sign + strong house = a great person.
- Match the yoga to its planet
- Answer: Ruchaka = Mars; Bhadra = Mercury; Hamsa = Jupiter; Malavya = Venus. Shasha belongs to Saturn.
- Which planet forms Shasha yoga?
- Answer: Saturn. Shasha = Saturn, the yoga of discipline and authority.
- True or false: The Sun and Moon can form Pancha Mahapurusha yogas.
- Answer: False. Only the five 'star planets' do: Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn.
- Which yoga is linked with beauty, comfort and the arts?
- Answer: Malavya. Malavya = Venus.
- Cancer Lagna, and Jupiter is in Cancer in house 1. Which yoga is this?
- Answer: Hamsa. Jupiter is exalted in Cancer and sits in a kendra (house 1).
- Aries Lagna, and Mars is in Aries in house 1. Which yoga?
- Answer: Ruchaka. Mars owns Aries and house 1 is a kendra.
- Leo Lagna, and Saturn is in Libra (exalted) in house 3. Is this Shasha yoga?
- Answer: No - house 3 is not a kendra. Saturn is exalted, but it needs to be in house 1, 4, 7 or 10.
The five yogas at a glance
| Yoga | Planet | Own signs | Exaltation sign | Main qualities |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ruchaka | Mars | Aries, Scorpio | Capricorn | Courage, leadership, physical strength, command |
| Bhadra | Mercury | Gemini, Virgo | Virgo | Intellect, speech, business sense, learning |
| Hamsa | Jupiter | Sagittarius, Pisces | Cancer | Wisdom, virtue, spirituality, respect |
| Malavya | Venus | Taurus, Libra | Pisces | Beauty, comfort, art, refined pleasures |
| Shasha | Saturn | Capricorn, Aquarius | Libra | Discipline, authority, organisation, endurance |
The two conditions
- Dignity: the planet must be in its own sign or exaltation sign.
- Position: it must be in a kendra from the Lagna: house 1, 4, 7 or 10.
Many astrologers also accept the yoga from the Moon (a kendra from the Moon sign), though the Lagna version is considered stronger.
Which Lagnas can have each yoga?
Because the planet must be in a specific sign and in a kendra, each yoga is possible only for certain Lagnas.
| Yoga | Possible for these Lagnas (sign of the planet) |
|---|---|
| Ruchaka (Mars in Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn) | Aries, Taurus, Cancer, Leo, Libra, Scorpio, Capricorn, Aquarius |
| Bhadra (Mercury in Gemini or Virgo) | Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces |
| Hamsa (Jupiter in Sagittarius, Pisces or Cancer) | Sagittarius, Pisces, Gemini, Virgo, Cancer, Libra, Aries, Capricorn |
| Malavya (Venus in Taurus, Libra or Pisces) | Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius, Libra, Capricorn, Aries, Cancer, Pisces, Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius |
| Shasha (Saturn in Capricorn, Aquarius or Libra) | Capricorn, Aries, Cancer, Libra, Aquarius, Taurus, Leo, Scorpio |
Malavya is possible for every one of the twelve Lagnas, because Venus has three qualifying signs spread around the zodiac. The cardinal Lagnas (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) can host the widest choice of yogas, because so many own and exaltation signs fall in their kendras.
Ruchaka yoga (Mars)
Ruchaka gives a strong body, courage, a commanding nature and success in fields that need decisive action: the army, police, sport, surgery, engineering, property and management. When afflicted it can make a person aggressive or accident-prone. Mars in the 10th in Capricorn (for an Aries Lagna) is a classic Ruchaka for a career of authority.
Bhadra yoga (Mercury)
Bhadra gives sharp intelligence, eloquence, wit, a youthful look and success in writing, teaching, commerce, accounting, IT and communication. Mercury in Virgo is both own and exalted sign, so Bhadra from Virgo is especially strong. Because Mercury is often combust, check its distance from the Sun.
Hamsa yoga (Jupiter)
Hamsa (swan) gives wisdom, righteousness, a respected name, spiritual inclination and success in teaching, law, finance, counselling and religion. Jupiter exalted in Cancer in the 1st (for a Cancer Lagna) or in Pisces in the 7th (for a Virgo Lagna) are classic examples.
Malavya yoga (Venus)
Malavya gives beauty, charm, artistic talent, comfort, vehicles and a pleasant married life. It favours careers in the arts, fashion, design, hospitality, luxury goods and media. Venus exalted in Pisces or in its own Libra or Taurus in a kendra are the strongest forms.
Shasha yoga (Saturn)
Shasha gives authority over people, organising ability, endurance and slow but lasting success. It often appears in charts of administrators, politicians, industrialists and leaders of large organisations. Saturn exalted in Libra in a kendra (for Libra, Aries, Cancer or Capricorn Lagnas) is the classic form.
How to judge the strength of a Mahapurusha yoga
| Factor | Effect |
|---|---|
| Exaltation, especially near the deep exaltation degree | Strongest |
| Own sign (moolatrikona even better) | Strong |
| Combust (close to the Sun) | Weakened |
| Conjunct Rahu, Ketu or strong malefics | Mixed, intense |
| Aspected by Jupiter | Protected and refined |
| Strong in the D9 | Reliable through life |
| Dasha of the planet runs at a useful age | The yoga fully manifests |
A Mahapurusha planet that also rules a dusthana for the Lagna (for example Saturn for Cancer Lagna, ruling the 7th and 8th) still gives the yoga's strength of character, but the life may include that house's challenges too.
Worked example
Libra Lagna, Saturn in Libra in the 1st house.
- Condition 1: Saturn is exalted in Libra. Yes.
- Condition 2: the 1st house is a kendra. Yes.
- Result: Shasha yoga. Saturn is also the yogakaraka for Libra (ruling the 4th and 5th), so this is an exceptionally strong placement: disciplined, fair-minded, respected, with a slow but steady rise, peaking in Saturn's mahadasha.
Practice
- For each of Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn, note its sign in your chart.
- Is it in its own or exaltation sign?
- If yes, which house is it in from your Lagna? From your Moon?
- If it is a kendra, you have that Mahapurusha yoga. Read more in the Pancha Mahapurusha yoga guide.
Key takeaways
- Five yogas: Ruchaka (Mars), Bhadra (Mercury), Hamsa (Jupiter), Malavya (Venus), Shasha (Saturn).
- Each needs its planet in its own or exaltation sign and in a kendra from the Lagna.
- The Sun, Moon, Rahu and Ketu do not form them.
- Strength, combustion, affliction and the D9 decide how fully the yoga works.
Mahapurusha yogas and their dashas
| Yoga | Planet's mahadasha | Typical peak of results |
|---|---|---|
| Ruchaka | Mars (7 years) | Bursts of achievement, property, leadership |
| Bhadra | Mercury (17 years) | Education, business and communication success |
| Hamsa | Jupiter (16 years) | Respect, family growth, wisdom, wealth |
| Malavya | Venus (20 years) | Comfort, marriage, art, luxury |
| Shasha | Saturn (19 years) | Authority, organisation, slow and lasting rise |
A Mahapurusha yoga is always visible in the person's character, but its biggest events cluster in the planet's own mahadasha and antardashas.
Careers linked with each yoga
| Yoga | Careers often seen |
|---|---|
| Ruchaka | Army, police, sport, surgery, engineering, real estate, management |
| Bhadra | Writing, journalism, teaching, accounting, IT, trade, law |
| Hamsa | Teaching, banking and finance, law, counselling, religion, medicine |
| Malavya | Arts, film, fashion, design, hospitality, jewellery, beauty |
| Shasha | Administration, politics, industry, mining, labour management, judiciary |
When a Mahapurusha yoga is weakened
Classical and modern astrologers point to several factors that reduce a Mahapurusha yoga:
- Combustion: the planet too close to the Sun loses much of its power.
- Conjunction with the Sun or Moon: some texts say the yoga then gives good character but less worldly power.
- Affliction by Rahu, Ketu or strong malefics.
- Weakness in the D9: a planet strong in D1 but debilitated in D9 may disappoint later in life.
Practice: rate your five star planets
| Planet | Your sign | Own or exalted? | House from Lagna | Kendra? | Yoga |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mars | Ruchaka? | ||||
| Mercury | Bhadra? | ||||
| Jupiter | Hamsa? | ||||
| Venus | Malavya? | ||||
| Saturn | Shasha? |
Fill this in from your chart. Even if none qualifies, note the planets that are in their own or exaltation signs: they are still your strongest planets, and their dashas are likely to be productive.
Mahapurusha yogas in everyday language
In simple terms, a Mahapurusha yoga means one of your five star planets is both at its best (own or exaltation sign) and in a position of power (a kendra). That planet's qualities become a defining part of who you are. A person with Ruchaka is visibly courageous; with Bhadra, articulate and clever; with Hamsa, wise and principled; with Malavya, graceful and artistic; with Shasha, disciplined and commanding. Friends and colleagues usually notice these qualities long before the person reads about the yoga.
Common beginner mistakes
- Forgetting the kendra condition. An exalted planet in the 3rd or 11th is strong, but it is not a Mahapurusha yoga.
- Including the Sun or Moon. They do not form these yogas.
- Ignoring combustion, especially for Mercury and Venus.
- Assuming fame. These yogas show strength of character and achievement in one's field, not necessarily celebrity.
Frequently asked questions
What are the Pancha Mahapurusha yogas?
Five yogas formed when Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn is in its own or exaltation sign in a kendra from the Lagna: Ruchaka, Bhadra, Hamsa, Malavya and Shasha.
Which Pancha Mahapurusha yoga is the best?
Each is excellent in its own field. Hamsa (Jupiter) is often called the most auspicious for wisdom and virtue, Shasha (Saturn) the most powerful for authority, and Malavya (Venus) the best for comfort and the arts.
Is Malavya yoga common?
It is one of the more common Mahapurusha yogas, because Venus has three qualifying signs (Taurus, Libra and Pisces) and they fall in kendras for many Lagnas.
Can a person have more than one Mahapurusha yoga?
Yes. Some charts have two or even three, for example exalted Jupiter in Cancer and exalted Saturn in Libra both in kendras for a Cancer Lagna.
Does Shasha yoga give political power?
It is strongly linked with authority and leadership of people, which is why it often appears in the charts of administrators and politicians. The rest of the chart decides the field.
Can Pancha Mahapurusha yoga form from the Moon?
Many astrologers accept it from the Moon sign as well as from the Lagna, though the Lagna version is considered stronger.
What is Hamsa yoga?
Jupiter in its own sign (Sagittarius or Pisces) or exaltation sign (Cancer) in a kendra from the Lagna, giving wisdom, virtue and respect.
What is Shasha yoga?
Saturn in its own sign (Capricorn or Aquarius) or exaltation sign (Libra) in a kendra from the Lagna, giving discipline, authority and lasting success.
What is Malavya yoga?
Venus in its own sign (Taurus or Libra) or exaltation sign (Pisces) in a kendra from the Lagna, giving beauty, charm, artistic talent and comfort.
What is Ruchaka yoga?
Mars in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio) or exaltation sign (Capricorn) in a kendra from the Lagna, giving courage, strength and leadership.
What is Bhadra yoga?
Mercury in Gemini or Virgo in a kendra from the Lagna, giving sharp intelligence, eloquence and business skill.
