How to Check Raj Yoga in Your Kundli (and Find Your Yogakaraka)

Lesson 2 of AstroWord's free Vedic astrology course · about 5 minutes · Parashari system, Lahiri ayanamsa

By AstroWord · Updated 5 November 2026 · Based on Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra

A Raja yoga (also written Raj Yoga, Rajyog or Rajayogam, the "royal combination") forms when the lord of a kendra (houses 1, 4, 7, 10) is connected with the lord of a trikona (houses 1, 5, 9) by conjunction, mutual aspect or exchange of signs. It promises rise, status, authority and success. The strongest version links the 9th and 10th lords and is called Dharma-Karmadhipati yoga. A single planet that rules both a kendra and a trikona is a yogakaraka: Saturn for Taurus and Libra Lagnas, Mars for Cancer and Leo, and Venus for Capricorn and Aquarius.

Raja means king. Raja yogas are the combinations for rise, status and success. Here's how they form.

Lesson notes

  • A Raja yoga forms when a kendra lord (houses 1, 4, 7, 10) joins a trikona lord (houses 1, 5, 9). Power meets luck - and that brings rise in life.
  • The strongest Raja yoga links the 9th lord (luck, dharma) with the 10th lord (career, karma). It has a special name: Dharma-Karmadhipati yoga.
  • Example: Leo Lagna. The 4th house is Scorpio and the 9th is Aries - both ruled by Mars. One planet rules a kendra AND a trikona. That planet is called the yogakaraka.
  • Only six Lagnas have a yogakaraka: Taurus and Libra - Saturn Cancer and Leo - Mars Capricorn and Aquarius - Venus
  • A Raja yoga is strongest when its planets are strong (exalted or in their own signs), in good houses, and when their dasha runs at the right age.

Practice questions and answers

A Raja yoga joins the lord of a kendra with the lord of...?
Answer: A trikona. Kendra (power) + trikona (luck) = Raja yoga.
Which two lords form Dharma-Karmadhipati yoga?
Answer: 9th and 10th. Dharma = 9th house, karma = 10th house.
What is a yogakaraka?
Answer: A planet that rules both a kendra and a trikona. It forms a Raja yoga all by itself.
Match the Lagna to its yogakaraka
Answer: Taurus = Saturn; Cancer = Mars; Capricorn = Venus; Libra = Saturn. Saturn for Taurus and Libra, Mars for Cancer and Leo, Venus for Capricorn and Aquarius.
For a Libra Lagna, Saturn rules the 4th and 5th houses. Why is Saturn special here?
Answer: It rules a kendra and a trikona. 4th = kendra, 5th = trikona. Saturn is the yogakaraka for Libra.
True or false: Every Lagna has a yogakaraka planet.
Answer: False. Only Taurus, Libra, Cancer, Leo, Capricorn and Aquarius do.

Why kendra plus trikona means a king

Parashara calls the kendras the houses of Vishnu (the preserver: power, action, support) and the trikonas the houses of Lakshmi (the goddess of fortune: merit, luck, blessings). When their lords join, effort meets fortune. The classical image is a king: someone whose actions (kendras) are backed by grace and merit (trikonas), and who therefore rises.

How a Raja yoga forms

Link between a kendra lord and a trikona lordStrength
Exchange of signs (parivartana)Strongest
Conjunction in the same signVery strong
Mutual aspectStrong
One aspecting the otherModerate
One sitting in the other's houseModerate

The 1st house counts as both kendra and trikona, so the Lagna lord joining any kendra or trikona lord also forms a Raja yoga.

Dharma-Karmadhipati yoga: the 9th and 10th lords

The 9th house is dharma (purpose, fortune, higher learning) and the 10th is karma (action, career, status). When their lords join, the person's work aligns with their purpose and luck. Many astrologers consider this the finest Raja yoga. Read more in the guide to Dharma-Karmadhipati yoga, and for the wider picture of rajyog and its types, see Raja yoga in astrology.

The yogakaraka: a Raja yoga in one planet

For six Lagnas a single planet rules both a kendra and a trikona. That planet is the yogakaraka, the best planet in the chart, and its dasha is usually a period of rise.

LagnaYogakarakaHouses ruled
TaurusSaturn9th (Capricorn) and 10th (Aquarius)

LeoMars4th (Scorpio) and 9th (Aries)
CapricornVenus5th (Taurus) and 10th (Libra)
AquariusVenus4th (Taurus) and 9th (Libra)

Aries, Gemini, Virgo, Scorpio, Sagittarius and Pisces have no yogakaraka; their Raja yogas come from two different planets joining.

What strengthens or weakens a Raja yoga

FactorEffect
Planets exalted, own sign or in a friend's signStrong, clear results
Yoga formed in a kendra or trikonaStrong
Yoga formed in the 6th, 8th or 12thWeakened or delayed
One planet combust or debilitated without cancellationPartial results
Conjunction with Rahu or KetuUnusual or unstable results
Kendra lord also rules a dusthanaMixed; the dusthana colours the yoga

Raja yoga and the dasha

A Raja yoga gives its results mainly in the dasha or antardasha of the planets forming it. Two practical rules:

  • The stronger planet's dasha gives more. If the 10th lord is exalted and the 9th lord is average, the 10th lord's period usually brings the biggest rise.
  • Age matters. A Raja yoga whose dasha runs in childhood may show as a privileged upbringing; the same yoga in one's thirties or forties often brings career peaks.

Common types of Raja yoga in classical texts

NameFormation (simplified)
Dharma-Karmadhipati9th and 10th lords connected
Yogakaraka Raja yogaA planet ruling a kendra and a trikona, well placed
Lagna lord in a trikonaSelf-made success through merit
Kendra-trikona exchangeLords of a kendra and trikona in each other's signs
Viparita Raja yogaDusthana lords in dusthanas (Lesson 40)
Neecha Bhanga Raja yogaCancelled debilitation (Lesson 40)

Worked example

Leo Lagna. Mars (lord of the 4th and 9th, yogakaraka) is exalted in Capricorn in the 6th house. Venus (10th lord) sits in Aries in the 9th with the Sun (Lagna lord).

  • Yogakaraka Mars is exalted but in the 6th: strong energy that rises through competition, service or overcoming obstacles.
  • Sun (1st lord) with Venus (10th lord) in the 9th: a Raja yoga between the Lagna lord and the 10th lord, placed in a trikona. The 9th lord's sign (Aries) adds Mars's influence.
  • Prediction: a rise in status during Mars, Sun or Venus periods, especially when Jupiter or Saturn transits the 9th or 10th.

Key takeaways

  • Raja yoga = a kendra lord joined with a trikona lord.
  • The 9th and 10th lords together form the finest Raja yoga, Dharma-Karmadhipati.
  • Six Lagnas have a yogakaraka planet that forms a Raja yoga on its own.
  • Strength, house placement and dasha timing decide how much a Raja yoga gives.

Raja yoga by the house where it forms

Where the kendra and trikona lords meet colours the result:

House of the Raja yogaTypical expression
1stPersonal charisma and self-made rise
4thProperty, vehicles, comfort, a position close to home or land
5thSuccess through intelligence, education, advice or creative work
7thRise through partnerships, public dealings or a spouse
9thFortune, higher learning, teaching, law, religion, mentors
10thCareer peak, authority, government or senior management
11thLarge gains, influential networks

Raja yogas forming in the 6th, 8th or 12th tend to work through service, research, foreign lands or after obstacles.

A Raja yoga for every Lagna

Every Lagna has at least one natural Raja yoga pairing between its Lagna lord, kendra lords and trikona lords:

LagnaA classic Raja yoga pair
AriesMars (1st) with Jupiter (9th), or Sun (5th) with Saturn (10th)
TaurusSaturn alone (9th and 10th, yogakaraka)
GeminiMercury (1st) with Venus (5th) or Saturn (9th)
CancerMars alone (5th and 10th, yogakaraka)
LeoMars alone (4th and 9th, yogakaraka)
VirgoMercury (1st and 10th) with Venus (9th)
LibraSaturn alone (4th and 5th, yogakaraka)
ScorpioSun (10th) with Moon (9th)
SagittariusJupiter (1st and 4th) with Sun (9th)
CapricornVenus alone (5th and 10th, yogakaraka)
AquariusVenus alone (4th and 9th, yogakaraka)
PiscesJupiter (1st and 10th) with Mars (9th) or Moon (5th)

Check how these planets sit in your own chart; when they are joined and strong, the Raja yoga is active.

Raja yoga and government jobs

Many people ask whether a Raja yoga brings a government job. The Sun (authority, government) and the 10th house (career) are the key factors. A Raja yoga involving the Sun or the 10th lord, with a strong Sun and support in the D10, is a classic signature of government service or high administrative office.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Assuming Raja yoga means royalty. Today it shows rise in one's own field: a senior job, recognition, authority.
  • Ignoring dusthana lordship. A kendra lord that also rules the 8th, for example, mixes the result.
  • Forgetting the dasha. Without its planets' periods, a Raja yoga can stay quiet.
  • Counting the Sun and Moon wrongly. They rule only one sign each; check which houses they rule for your Lagna.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if I have Raja yoga in my kundli?

Find your kendra lords (1, 4, 7, 10) and trikona lords (1, 5, 9) and check whether any kendra lord is joined with a trikona lord by conjunction, mutual aspect or exchange. The free Raja yoga calculator checks this for you.

Which is the strongest Raja yoga?

Usually Dharma-Karmadhipati yoga (9th and 10th lords joined) or a strong, well-placed yogakaraka, especially when in a kendra or trikona and strong in the D9 and D10.

What is a yogakaraka planet?

A planet that rules both a kendra and a trikona for a Lagna: Saturn for Taurus and Libra, Mars for Cancer and Leo, Venus for Capricorn and Aquarius.

Does Raja yoga guarantee success?

No. It shows strong potential. Results depend on the planets' strength, the houses they occupy, afflictions and whether their dashas run at a useful age.

At what age does Raja yoga give results?

During the dasha or antardasha of the planets forming it. Many people notice the results between their late twenties and fifties, when career dashas often run.

Can Raja yoga be cancelled?

It can be weakened by debilitation, combustion, placement in dusthanas or strong malefic affliction. A yoga in the 6th, 8th or 12th often gives results only after struggle.

Is Raja yoga the same for men and women?

Yes. Raja yogas are judged the same way in every chart; the results show as rise and recognition in whatever field the person chooses.

What is the difference between a yogakaraka and a Raja yoga?

A yogakaraka is a single planet that rules both a kendra and a trikona, so it forms a Raja yoga by itself. Other Raja yogas need two different planets, a kendra lord and a trikona lord, to join.

Can Rahu or Ketu form a Raja yoga?

They own no signs in Parashara's main scheme, but when they sit in a kendra or trikona with a kendra or trikona lord, or in such a house while their dispositor is strong, many astrologers read them as giving Raja yoga results, often suddenly.

Does Raja yoga work for every Lagna in the same way?

The principle is the same, but the planets differ. Each Lagna has its own kendra and trikona lords, so the planets that form Raja yogas, and the dashas that activate them, are different for every ascendant.
