Jupiter, the great benefic, spends about a year in each sign. Where it goes, growth tends to follow.
Lesson notes
- Jupiter takes about 12 years to go round the zodiac. When it comes back to the sign it was in at your birth, that's your Jupiter return - roughly at ages 12, 24, 36, 48...
- Counted from your Moon sign, Jupiter gives its best results in houses 2, 5, 7, 9 and 11.
- In other houses Jupiter is less helpful, but it is still a benefic - it rarely causes real harm on its own.

Why Jupiter's transit matters so much
Jupiter is the greatest natural benefic: the guru, the planet of wisdom, children, wealth, faith and expansion. Because it moves slowly, its transit through a house lasts about a year, long enough to shape the year's opportunities. In India, Jupiter's change of sign (Guru gochar or Guru peyarchi) is a major annual event, and many families time weddings and new ventures around it.
Jupiter's transit through each house from the Moon
| House from the Moon | Classical verdict | Typical themes |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Mixed to difficult | Restlessness, change of place, health awareness; growth comes through self-work |
| 2nd | Favourable | Income, family harmony, good speech, savings, perhaps a new family member |
| 3rd | Unfavourable | Effort with little reward, changes at work, short trips |
| 4th | Unfavourable | Home or mother's concerns, vehicle or property expenses, inner unrest |
| 5th | Very favourable | Children, creativity, romance, education, speculative gains |
| 6th | Unfavourable | Health, debts, disputes, competition; good for overcoming enemies with effort |
| 7th | Very favourable | Marriage, partnerships, contracts, public recognition |
| 8th | Unfavourable | Obstacles, health care, hidden matters, research or inheritance |
| 9th | Very favourable | Luck, travel, higher learning, teachers, father's support, dharma |
| 10th | Mixed | Career change or extra responsibility; status can rise with effort |
| 11th | Very favourable | Gains, fulfilled wishes, promotions, friends and networks |
| 12th | Unfavourable | Expenses, foreign travel, spiritual retreat, sleep and rest |
Jupiter's aspects in transit
Jupiter aspects the 5th, 7th and 9th houses from wherever it stands. Even when it transits a difficult house from your Moon, its aspects can bless other areas.
Example: Jupiter transiting the 12th house from your Moon aspects the 4th, 6th and 8th. Expenses rise, but home life (4th) and the ability to resolve debts or illness (6th) can still benefit.
Jupiter over natal planets
Jupiter crossing a natal planet expands that planet's significations for a few months:
| Jupiter transits over natal | Common effect |
|---|---|
| Sun | Recognition, confidence, support from authority |
| Moon | Emotional well-being, comfort, popularity |
| Venus | Romance, marriage, luxury, artistic success |
| Mercury | Learning, writing, business deals |
| Saturn | Relief from pressure, structured growth |
| The Lagna | A fresh start, better health and outlook |
The Jupiter return
Jupiter returns to its birth position about every 12 years: around ages 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72 and 84. Each return opens a new 12-year growth cycle, and often brings themes of the house Jupiter occupies in the birth chart back into focus.
Jupiter in 2026: Cancer and Leo
Jupiter spent much of 2026 in sidereal Cancer, its sign of exaltation, after entering it on 2 June 2026. On 31 October 2026 it moved into sidereal Leo, the sign of the Sun, a friend of Jupiter. It turns retrograde on 13 December 2026, so check the exact dates for any return to Cancer before relying on a Leo reading for early 2027.
With Jupiter in Leo, counted from each Moon sign:
| Moon sign | House Jupiter transits | Classical verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 5th | Very favourable |
| Taurus | 4th | Unfavourable |
| Gemini | 3rd | Unfavourable |
| Cancer | 2nd | Favourable |
| Leo | 1st | Mixed |
| Virgo | 12th | Unfavourable |
| Libra | 11th | Very favourable |
| Scorpio | 10th | Mixed |
| Sagittarius | 9th | Very favourable |
| Capricorn | 8th | Unfavourable |
| Aquarius | 7th | Very favourable |
| Pisces | 6th | Unfavourable |

Jupiter transit and marriage
Jupiter is the main transit trigger for marriage in Vedic astrology. Marriage often happens when:
- The dasha or antardasha is connected with the 7th house, its lord or Venus.
- Jupiter transits or aspects the 7th house, its lord or Venus, from the Lagna or the Moon.
- Saturn also touches the same house or lord (the double transit, Lesson 31).
Worked example
Moon in Aquarius, running Venus mahadasha, Jupiter antardasha, with Jupiter transiting Leo (the 7th from the Moon) from November 2026.
- Jupiter in the 7th from the Moon: very favourable for partnerships and marriage.
- The antardasha lord is Jupiter itself, and the mahadasha lord Venus is the natural significator of marriage.
- If the person is of marriageable age and Saturn also supports the 7th, the year is a strong window for marriage.
Remedies during a difficult Jupiter transit
Traditional suggestions include honouring teachers and elders, reciting Jupiter's mantra on Thursdays, donating yellow items such as turmeric or chana dal, studying spiritual texts and leading an ethical life. Gemstones (yellow sapphire) should only be worn on an experienced astrologer's advice.
Key takeaways
- Jupiter stays about a year in each sign and returns every 12 years.
- From the Moon, the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th are its best transit houses.
- Its 5th, 7th and 9th aspects bless other houses even in a difficult transit.
- Jupiter is the main transit trigger for marriage, children and growth.
Jupiter through the twelve signs: natural flavour
Besides the house it transits for you, Jupiter takes on the flavour of the sign it is in:
| Sign | Jupiter's condition | General flavour of the year |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Friend's sign | Bold new starts, leadership, courage |
| Taurus | Enemy's sign (Venus) | Wealth focus, but values and comfort tested |
| Gemini | Enemy's sign (Mercury) | Learning, communication, trade; wisdom scattered |
| Cancer | Exalted | Strong protection, family, nourishment, faith |
| Leo | Friend's sign (Sun) | Leadership, creativity, recognition, children |
| Virgo | Enemy's sign (Mercury) | Service, health, analysis, detail |
| Libra | Enemy's sign (Venus) | Partnerships, diplomacy, law and balance |
| Scorpio | Friend's sign (Mars) | Research, transformation, hidden wealth |
| Sagittarius | Own sign (moolatrikona) | Higher learning, religion, travel, teachers |
| Capricorn | Debilitated | Practical results over ideals; careful judgement needed |
| Aquarius | Neutral sign (Saturn) | Social causes, networks, science |
| Pisces | Own sign | Spirituality, compassion, retreats |
Jupiter's Ashtakavarga score
If you know your Jupiter Ashtakavarga (the bindus Jupiter has in each sign of your chart), check the sign Jupiter is transiting. With 5 or more bindus, even an unfavourable house tends to give some benefit; with 3 or fewer, even a favourable house may underdeliver.
Jupiter retrograde in transit
Each year Jupiter retrogrades for about four months. During this time the year's growth themes go into review: plans slow down, past teachers or studies return, and decisions about education, children or investments benefit from reflection. If Jupiter retrogrades back into the previous sign, the previous year's transit themes return briefly.
Practice
- Find your Moon sign and Lagna.
- Count Jupiter's current house from each.
- Note the houses Jupiter aspects from there (5th, 7th and 9th from its position).
- Write down which areas of life Jupiter blesses for you this year, and check your current antardasha to see if it supports them.
Jupiter transit and children, education and wealth
Beyond marriage, Jupiter's transit is the main trigger for three other life areas:
- Children: watch Jupiter transiting or aspecting the 5th house, its lord, or natal Jupiter during a dasha connected with the 5th house.
- Education: Jupiter over the 4th, 5th or 9th house (or their lords) supports admissions, exams and higher studies, especially in a Mercury, Jupiter or 5th lord period.
- Wealth: Jupiter transiting the 2nd or 11th from the Moon or the Lagna, or crossing the 2nd and 11th lords, often coincides with increases in income and savings.
In every case, the dasha must support the result; Jupiter then picks the year.
Jupiter and the Moon's nakshatra
Some astrologers also track Jupiter's transit through the nakshatras. Jupiter crossing your birth nakshatra, or the nakshatras of your Lagna lord and 10th lord, often marks blessed months within its year in a sign.
Common beginner mistakes
- Expecting Jupiter to give everything in a good house. The dasha must support it.
- Ignoring retrograde returns. Jupiter can move back into the previous sign.
- Reading only from the Moon. Check the Lagna too.
- Ignoring Jupiter's aspects. They often explain good events in a "bad" transit year.
