Sometimes a planet seems to stop and walk backwards across the sky. This is retrograde motion (vakri).
Lesson notes
- Retrograde is an optical effect: from Earth, a planet looks like it moves backwards for a while, then turns forward again. Nothing actually reverses in space.
- Who goes retrograde: Sun and Moon - never Rahu and Ketu - always Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn - sometimes
- Mercury goes retrograde about three times a year, for about three weeks each time. Delays and mix-ups with messages, travel and paperwork are its famous themes.
- A retrograde planet revisits ground it already crossed, so its themes come back for review - a good time to redo, repair and rethink.
Practice questions and answers
- True or false: A retrograde planet really moves backwards in space.
- Answer: False. It only looks that way from Earth.
- Which of these can never be retrograde?
- Answer: Moon. The Sun and Moon never go retrograde.
- Which pair is always retrograde?
- Answer: Rahu and Ketu. The shadow grahas always move backwards.
- About how often does Mercury go retrograde?
- Answer: About 3 times a year. Three times a year, about three weeks each.
- Saturn turns retrograde. What theme fits best?
- Answer: Revisiting old duties and lessons. Retrograde = review and repair.
Why planets appear to move backwards
Imagine overtaking a slower car on a motorway. For a moment, the slower car seems to slide backwards against the distant hills, even though both cars are moving forward. Retrograde motion is the same effect: as the Earth overtakes an outer planet (Mars, Jupiter, Saturn), or an inner planet (Mercury, Venus) overtakes the Earth, the planet appears to move backwards against the background stars.
A retrograde period has three phases:
| Phase | What happens |
|---|---|
| Stationary retrograde | The planet appears to stop before turning backwards; its influence is concentrated |
| Retrograde motion | The planet moves backwards, revisiting degrees it has already crossed |
| Stationary direct | The planet stops again before resuming forward motion |
After turning direct, the planet passes once more over the stretch it covered while retrograde. Astrologers call this the shadow period: matters raised during the retrograde often resolve when the planet clears its shadow.
How often each planet goes retrograde
| Planet | How often | How long | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mercury | About 3 times a year | About 3 weeks each | The most famous retrograde |
| Venus | About every 18 months | About 6 weeks | Linked to relationship reviews |
| Mars | About every 26 months | About 10 weeks | Can stay 6 months or more in one sign |
| Jupiter | Every year | About 4 months | Can move back into the previous sign |
| Saturn | Every year | About 4½ months | Long, slow retrograde |
| Rahu and Ketu | Always | Permanent | Their mean motion is always backwards |
| Sun and Moon | Never | — | They are never retrograde from Earth |
Retrograde in the birth chart
A planet that was retrograde when you were born is marked "R" in your chart. Classical Vedic views:
- Strength: retrograde planets are closest to the Earth and brightest, so they gain cheshta bala (motional strength). Phaladeepika and other texts treat a retrograde planet as strong, even comparable to exaltation in some contexts.
- Expression: the planet's energy turns inward. It may work through reflection, repetition and revisiting before it delivers.
- Karma: many astrologers read natal retrograde planets as unfinished business from the past, areas where the person reworks lessons until they master them.
- A retrograde exalted planet may behave somewhat like a debilitated one, and a retrograde debilitated planet somewhat like an exalted one, according to a commonly quoted rule. Use it with care and look at the whole chart.
Natal retrograde planets at a glance
| Planet retrograde at birth | Common traits |
|---|---|
| Mercury | Deep, non-linear thinker; may rethink decisions, revise writing, learn by repetition |
| Venus | Unconventional values in love, re-evaluates relationships, may reconnect with past partners |
| Mars | Energy directed inward; strategic rather than impulsive; anger may build quietly |
| Jupiter | Personal philosophy, may question teachers or religion, wisdom from inner experience |
| Saturn | Strong sense of duty from early life, self-critical, late but lasting achievement |
Retrograde in transit
When a planet goes retrograde in the sky, its themes go into review for everyone, and especially for people whose charts it touches.
| Transit retrograde | Common advice |
|---|---|
| Mercury | Double-check messages, contracts, travel and devices; good for editing, revising and reconnecting |
| Venus | Avoid major luxury purchases or cosmetic changes; review relationships and finances |
| Mars | Avoid starting fights, surgery (if elective) or big physical projects; finish what is started |
| Jupiter | Reflect on beliefs, education and growth plans; results of expansion come later |
| Saturn | Review commitments and structures; past responsibilities return for completion |
Many Vedic astrologers are less fearful of retrograde transits than popular Western astrology. The key questions are still: which houses does the planet rule for you, and which house is it moving through?
Retrograde and sign change
Because a retrograde planet moves backwards, it can re-enter the previous sign. Jupiter or Saturn can therefore spend part of a year back in the sign they just left. When this happens, the results of the previous sign's transit return briefly. Watch for this when reading yearly forecasts, and check the exact dates rather than assuming a planet stays in one sign.
Retrograde planets in dashas
The dasha of a retrograde planet often has a two-part rhythm: delays or rework early, then results later in the period. A retrograde 10th lord, for example, may give career setbacks or a change of field early in its dasha, then lasting achievement. Many astrologers also say a retrograde planet gives some results of the house before the one it occupies.
Worked example
Chart: Gemini Lagna, Saturn retrograde in Libra in the 5th house. Saturn is exalted and is the 8th and 9th lord.
- Strength: exalted and retrograde; very strong in classical terms.
- Expression: inward and reflective; the person may take a long, considered approach to education, creativity and children (5th house).
- Dasha: Saturn's 19-year mahadasha may begin with study or work that has to be redone, followed by solid success, perhaps in research or teaching (9th lord).
Key takeaways
- Retrograde motion is apparent, caused by the relative motion of Earth and planet.
- Mercury retrogrades about three times a year; Jupiter and Saturn once a year.
- In Vedic astrology retrograde planets are strong but work inwardly and through revision.
- Retrograde planets can re-enter the previous sign, bringing back that transit's themes.
Retrograde Mercury in Vedic practice
Mercury's retrograde is the most talked-about, partly because it happens so often. In Vedic astrology:
- A natal retrograde Mercury is not a defect. Many writers, researchers and analysts have one; it gives a mind that reviews and refines.
- In transit, Mercury retrograde is mainly felt by people for whom Mercury rules important houses (Gemini and Virgo Lagnas especially) or when it crosses a natal planet or the Lagna.
- Mercury retrograde combust (close to the Sun) is often considered weaker than retrograde alone.
Retrograde and dasha timing
If a dasha lord is retrograde in the birth chart, astrologers often see:
- A delayed start: the planet's promised results take time to appear in its dasha.
- Repetition: situations recur until they are handled properly.
- Return of the past: old contacts, old projects or unfinished studies come back.
If the same planet also turns retrograde by transit during its own dasha, these themes are often especially strong.
Stationary planets
A planet is stationary when it is about to turn retrograde or direct. It barely moves for several days, concentrating its influence on one degree. If that degree is close to your natal Moon, Lagna or a key planet, expect that planet's themes to be highlighted strongly. Saturn and Jupiter stations are especially noticeable because they last longer.
How to see retrogrades in your chart
In most Vedic charts a retrograde planet is marked with "R" or "(R)" or written as "vakri". In the free birth chart calculator results, look for the retrograde marker beside the planet's degree. Note which houses each retrograde planet rules for your Lagna: those are the areas where you may approach life in a more reflective, unconventional or repeated way.
Retrograde planets and the houses they rule
Because a retrograde planet turns its energy inward, the houses it rules often show a pattern of reconsideration:
| Retrograde lord of | Common pattern |
|---|---|
| 1st (Lagna) | Late self-confidence, reinvention of identity |
| 4th | Returning home, revisiting property or family matters |
| 5th | Rethinking studies or creative work, children later in life |
| 7th | Reconnecting with past partners, delayed or second marriage |
| 10th | Career changes, returning to an earlier field |
| 11th | Gains that come in a second attempt |
These are tendencies, to be confirmed with the planet's strength and the dashas.
Common beginner mistakes
- Calling every retrograde bad. Classically, a retrograde planet is strong.
- Thinking the planet really reverses. It is an optical effect.
- Forgetting the shadow period. Matters often settle only after the planet clears the degrees it retraced.
- Ignoring house lordship. A retrograde planet's results still depend on the houses it rules and occupies.
Frequently asked questions
What does retrograde mean in Vedic astrology?
A planet that appears to move backwards (vakri). It is considered strong, but its results come through reflection, repetition or delay.
Is a retrograde planet good or bad?
Neither by itself. It is strong, so it intensifies whatever houses it rules and occupies. Results depend on the planet's lordship and placement.
How often does Mercury go retrograde?
About three times a year, for about three weeks each time.
Can the Sun or Moon be retrograde?
No. As seen from the Earth, the Sun and Moon always move forward through the zodiac.
Why are Rahu and Ketu always retrograde?
Their mean motion along the zodiac is always backwards, because the lunar nodes regress around the ecliptic in an 18.6-year cycle.
Should I avoid signing contracts during Mercury retrograde?
Many astrologers suggest extra care: read everything twice and expect revisions. If a contract must be signed, check it thoroughly rather than avoiding it altogether.
What does it mean if Saturn is retrograde in my birth chart?
It often shows a strong, inward sense of duty, self-criticism and late but lasting success. Saturn's lessons tend to be learnt by revisiting them.
Is Jupiter retrograde bad?
Not by itself. Natal retrograde Jupiter often gives an independent, personal philosophy. In transit it is a time to review plans, beliefs and investments rather than to expand rapidly.
How long does Saturn stay retrograde?
About four and a half months every year.
Does a retrograde planet give results of the previous house?
Many astrologers say so: a retrograde planet is read partly in its own house and partly in the house before it. Use this as a supplementary view, not a replacement for the planet's actual placement.
Is it bad to start a business when Mercury is retrograde?
It is traditionally better to launch new contracts, products or communications when Mercury is direct. If you must start during the retrograde, check every document carefully and expect revisions.
