A transit (gochara) is the current movement of a planet through the zodiac, compared with your birth chart. In Vedic astrology transits are mainly read from your Moon sign: each planet gives good results when it passes through certain houses counted from the Moon, such as Jupiter in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th, and Saturn in the 3rd, 6th and 11th. Dashas show what is promised and when the period opens; transits act as the trigger that decides the exact timing of events.

Your birth chart is a photo of the sky at one moment. But the planets never stopped moving.

Lesson notes

  • A transit (gochara) is where a planet is in the sky right now. Astrologers compare today's sky with your birth chart.
  • In Vedic astrology, transits are counted mainly from your Moon sign (Chandra lagna). Your Moon sign counts as house 1, the next sign as house 2, and so on.
  • Astrologers also count transits from your Lagna. The Moon shows how a transit feels; the Lagna shows where it happens in your life.

Practice questions and answers

What is a transit?
Answer: Where a planet is in the sky right now. Birth chart = the photo. Transits = the live sky.
True or false: Your birth chart changes every day.
Answer: False. Your birth chart is fixed for life. Only the transits move.
Transits are mainly counted from which sign?
Answer: Your Moon sign. The Moon sign is the classic starting point for transits.
Someone's Moon is in Leo. Jupiter moves into Virgo. Which house from their Moon is that?
Answer: 2. Leo 1, Virgo 2.
Someone's Moon is in Aries. Saturn is moving through Libra. Which house from their Moon?
Answer: 7. Libra is opposite Aries - house 7.
True or false: Transits can also be counted from your Lagna.
Answer: True. Moon sign for the feeling, Lagna for the life area.

Birth chart vs transits

Your birth chart is a frozen snapshot of the sky at the moment you were born. The planets, of course, keep moving. A transit is where a planet is now, and how that current position interacts with your fixed birth chart.

Why transits are read from the Moon

Vedic tradition reads gochara mainly from the Moon sign (janma rashi), because the Moon represents the mind and how we experience daily life. That is why daily, weekly and yearly horoscopes in India are written for the twelve Moon signs, not the Sun signs used in Western astrology. Find yours with the Moon sign calculator.

To read a transit, count the houses from your Moon sign. If your Moon is in Taurus and Saturn is moving through Pisces, Saturn is transiting the 11th house from your Moon (Taurus 1, Gemini 2, Cancer 3, Leo 4, Virgo 5, Libra 6, Scorpio 7, Sagittarius 8, Capricorn 9, Aquarius 10, Pisces 11).

Favourable transit houses from the Moon

Classical texts such as Phaladeepika give the houses where each planet's transit is favourable:

PlanetFavourable houses from the MoonMainly unfavourable
Sun3, 6, 10, 111, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 12
Moon1, 3, 6, 7, 10, 112, 4, 5, 8, 9, 12
Mars3, 6, 11Most others, especially 1, 4, 8, 12
Mercury2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 111, 3, 5, 7, 9, 12
Jupiter2, 5, 7, 9, 111, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12
Venus1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 11, 126, 7, 10
Saturn3, 6, 111, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12
Rahu and Ketu3, 6, 11Most others

Notice that the 3rd, 6th and 11th are good for all the malefics (Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu): these upachaya houses grow with effort, and malefic energy is useful there. The 11th, the house of gains, is good for every planet.

Vedha: when a good transit is blocked

Classical gochara includes vedha (obstruction). A planet in a favourable house can be blocked if another planet is transiting a paired "vedha" house at the same time. For Jupiter, the main pairs are:

Jupiter's good houseBlocked if a planet transits
2nd12th
5th4th
7th3rd
9th10th
11th8th

Two exceptions: the Sun and Saturn do not cause vedha to each other (father and son), nor do the Moon and Mercury (mother and son). Vedha is a refinement; beginners can start without it, but it explains why a "good" transit sometimes underdelivers.

Transits also from the Lagna and natal planets

Modern Vedic practice also checks:

  • Transits over the Lagna houses: Jupiter transiting the 10th house from the Lagna can still bring career focus, even if it is the 3rd from the Moon.
  • Transits over natal planets: Saturn crossing your natal Sun, or Jupiter crossing your natal Venus, activates those planets.
  • Aspects in transit: Jupiter's 5th, 7th and 9th aspects and Saturn's 3rd, 7th and 10th aspects work in transit too.

When the Moon-based and Lagna-based readings agree, the transit result is strongest.

Ashtakavarga: scoring transits

A more precise classical tool is Ashtakavarga, which gives each sign a score (bindus) for each planet in your chart. A planet transiting a sign where it has 4 or more bindus out of 8 tends to give good results; fewer than 4 tends to give weaker results. Sarvashtakavarga (the total for all planets) shows which signs are strong overall: signs with 28 or more points support whatever transits them.

Transits and dashas work together

A transit can only give what the birth chart and dasha allow. A beautiful Jupiter transit through your 7th house will not bring marriage if your dashas are not connected with marriage at the time. But when the dasha lord is linked with the 7th and Jupiter transits it, the promise is triggered. Lesson 31 covers this in depth.

Worked example: reading current transits

Person with the Moon in Capricorn, November 2026:

PlanetTransitingHouse from the MoonClassical verdict
SaturnPisces3rdFavourable: effort pays, courage, good results from hard work
JupiterLeo (entered 31 October 2026)8thUnfavourable: obstacles, hidden matters, health care needed
RahuAquarius2ndUnfavourable: watch speech, family friction, money leaks

Overall: a productive year for effort and self-driven projects, with a need for care around joint finances, health and family speech. Check the current sky on the daily horoscope page.

Key takeaways

  • Transits are the current planetary positions compared with your birth chart.
  • Vedic gochara is read mainly from the Moon sign, confirmed from the Lagna.
  • The 3rd, 6th and 11th from the Moon are good for malefics; Jupiter is good in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th.
  • Transits trigger what the birth chart and dashas promise.

Transits through each house: a plain-language guide

Whatever the planet, a transit brings its energy to the area of life ruled by the house it passes through (counted from the Moon, and also from the Lagna):

HouseArea of life a transit touches
1stBody, health, mood, self-image, new beginnings
2ndMoney, family, speech, food habits
3rdCourage, effort, siblings, short trips, communication
4thHome, mother, property, vehicles, inner peace
5thChildren, romance, creativity, education, speculation
6thHealth routines, debts, competition, service, enemies
7thMarriage, partnerships, contracts, the public
8thSudden change, hidden matters, research, joint money, longevity
9thLuck, father, teachers, long journeys, higher learning, faith
10thCareer, status, authority, reputation
11thGains, friends, networks, fulfilment of wishes
12thExpenses, foreign lands, sleep, retreat, spiritual life

A benefic transit (Jupiter, Venus, a waxing Moon, a well-associated Mercury) usually adds support to that area; a malefic transit (Saturn, Mars, Rahu, Ketu, the Sun) usually adds pressure, except in the 3rd, 6th and 11th, where pressure turns into productive drive.

How long transit effects last

PlanetEffect lasts roughlyFelt as
Moon2 to 3 daysA mood or a day's events
Sun, Mercury, VenusAbout a monthThe month's theme
MarsAbout 6 weeks (longer when retrograde)A burst of energy or friction
JupiterAbout a yearThe year's opportunities
Rahu and KetuAbout 18 monthsA period of change or obsession
SaturnAbout 2½ yearsA long phase of work and testing

The Moon's own transit

Even the Moon's quick transit can be used. When the Moon passes through the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th or 11th from your birth Moon, the day tends to go well; when it passes through the 8th from your birth Moon (chandrashtama), the day is traditionally avoided for important beginnings. Lesson 32 shows how to use this in daily life.

Practice

  1. Find your Moon sign with the Moon sign calculator.
  2. Look up today's positions of Saturn, Jupiter, Rahu and Ketu.
  3. Count each one's house from your Moon sign.
  4. Mark each as favourable or unfavourable using the table above.
  5. Repeat from your Lagna and compare.

Transits and the natal Moon's strength

How strongly you feel transits also depends on your natal Moon. A bright, well-placed Moon (waxing, in a friendly or exalted sign, aspected by Jupiter) tends to absorb difficult transits more calmly. A weak Moon (near the new Moon, debilitated in Scorpio, or with Rahu, Ketu or Saturn) tends to feel transits, especially Saturn's and Rahu's, more intensely.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Reading transits from the Sun sign. Vedic horoscopes use the Moon sign.
  • Using tropical positions. Saturn in tropical Aries may still be in sidereal Pisces.
  • Predicting from transits alone. Without dasha support, transits give mild effects.
  • Fearing every malefic transit. Saturn in the 3rd, 6th or 11th from the Moon is actually helpful.

Frequently asked questions

What is gochara in astrology?

Gochara is the Sanskrit word for transits: the current movement of the planets through the signs, read against your birth chart, mainly from the Moon sign.

Are transits read from the Moon or the Lagna?

Primarily from the Moon in Vedic astrology, with the Lagna used as a confirmation. Many astrologers check both.

Which transit is the most important?

Saturn and Jupiter, because they move slowly and stay in a sign for about 2.5 years and about 1 year respectively. Their transits shape long periods.

Is Saturn in the 11th house from the Moon good?

Yes. The 11th is a favourable transit house for every planet, and Saturn there traditionally brings gains, achievements and the fulfilment of long-held goals.

How do I see current planetary transits?

Use the daily horoscope for your Moon sign, or compare current positions with your chart from the birth chart tool.

Why do Vedic horoscopes use the Moon sign instead of the Sun sign?

Because Vedic astrology treats the Moon as the mind, the part of us that experiences daily life, and reads transits from it. Western astrology uses the Sun sign instead.

What are the upachaya houses?

The 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses, which improve with time and effort. Malefic planets transiting the 3rd, 6th and 11th from the Moon tend to give good results.

What is vedha in transits?

An obstruction: a planet in a favourable transit house can have its good results blocked by another planet transiting a paired house at the same time.
