Your Dasha Life Timeline

Lesson 8 of AstroWord's free Vedic astrology course · about 5 minutes · Parashari system, Lahiri ayanamsa

By AstroWord · Updated 4 November 2026 · Based on Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra

A dasha life timeline lists every mahadasha you will live through with its start and end dates and your age at each change. To build one: find the Moon's nakshatra and its lord (your first mahadasha), calculate the balance of that dasha at birth, then add each following mahadasha's full years in the fixed Vimshottari order. Reading the timeline alongside the strength and houses of each dasha lord gives a map of your life's main chapters, from childhood to old age.

Put it all together and you can map a whole life in dashas.

Lesson notes

  • Example: born in Mercury's mahadasha with 5 years left. Ketu's 7 years follow: age 5 to 12. Then Venus's 20 years: age 12 to 32. Then the Sun's 6 years: age 32 to 38.
  • To find the mahadasha at any age, add the years in order from birth until you pass that age.
  • When one mahadasha ends and the next begins, life often turns a page. This junction is called dasha sandhi.

Practice questions and answers

In that example, at what age does the Moon's mahadasha begin?
Answer: 38. The Moon follows the Sun, which ends at 38.
And at what age does that Moon mahadasha end?
Answer: 48. 38 + 10 years = 48.
Born in Saturn's mahadasha with 10 years left. Which mahadasha runs at age 20?
Answer: Mercury. Saturn ends at 10, then Mercury's 17 years run from 10 to 27.
Born in Rahu's mahadasha with 2 years left. Which mahadasha starts at age 2?
Answer: Jupiter. After Rahu comes Jupiter.
True or false: A change of mahadasha can feel like a new chapter of life.
Answer: True. That's dasha sandhi - the dasha junction.

Why build a life timeline?

A single dasha reading tells you about now. A full timeline shows the shape of a whole life: when the big chapters open and close, which planets rule your education years, your career-building years and your later life. It is the backbone of every serious Vedic reading and the best way to test the system on your own past.

Step 1: gather the inputs

InputWhere it comes fromExample
Birth dateYour records15 August 1995
Moon's sidereal longitudeYour chart18°40' Libra
Moon's nakshatra and lordLesson 20 tableSwati, ruled by Rahu
Balance of dashaLesson 21 formulaCalculated below

Step 2: calculate the balance

Swati runs from 6°40' to 20°00' Libra. The Moon at 18°40' has 1°20' left.

  • Fraction remaining: 1.333 ÷ 13.333 = 0.1
  • Balance: 0.1 × 18 years (Rahu) = 1.8 years
  • 0.8 × 12 = 9.6 months, and 0.6 × 30 = 18 days
  • Balance: 1 year 9 months 18 days of Rahu

Step 3: add the following mahadashas

MahadashaYearsStarts (age)Ends (age)Approximate dates
Rahu (balance)1.801.8Aug 1995 to Jun 1997
Jupiter161.817.8Jun 1997 to Jun 2013
Saturn1917.836.8Jun 2013 to Jun 2032
Mercury1736.853.8Jun 2032 to Jun 2049
Ketu753.860.8Jun 2049 to Jun 2056
Venus2060.880.8Jun 2056 to Jun 2076
Sun680.886.8Jun 2076 to Jun 2082

This person spends childhood in Jupiter, early adulthood and career-building in Saturn, mid-life in Mercury and later life in Venus. That is the rhythm of their life.

Step 4: judge each dasha lord in the chart

Now apply Lesson 23's method to each planet on the timeline. Suppose this person has a Capricorn Lagna:

MahadashaHouses ruled for CapricornLikely tone
Jupiter (childhood)3rd and 12thLearning and growth, but also changes of school or home, expenses
Saturn (ages 18 to 37)1st and 2nd (Lagna lord)Self-made progress, building wealth and identity through hard work
Mercury (37 to 54)6th and 9thMixed: luck, higher learning and travel, with work pressure or competition
Ketu (54 to 61)Acts like its sign lordTurning inward, research, possible change of path
Venus (61 to 81)5th and 10th (yogakaraka)A rewarding later life: status, children's success, comfort

Then check each planet's strength. If Saturn is strong in this chart, the person's 20s and 30s will be productive; if weak, the same years will feel heavy but still formative.

Step 5: mark the key antardashas

Within each mahadasha, note the antardashas of planets ruling key houses:

  • Marriage: antardashas of the 7th lord, Venus, or planets in the 7th, often during a supportive mahadasha.
  • Career rise: antardashas of the 10th lord, the yogakaraka, or planets in the 10th or 11th.
  • Property: antardashas of the 4th lord or Mars.
  • Children: antardashas of the 5th lord or Jupiter.
  • Relocation or foreign travel: antardashas of the 12th lord, Rahu or planets in the 12th.

The dasha calculator lists all antardasha dates so you can mark them on your timeline.

Step 6: test it on your past

The fastest way to trust (or rectify) a timeline is to check past events:

  1. List 5 to 10 major events with dates: moves, graduations, jobs, marriage, children, losses.
  2. Find the mahadasha and antardasha running at each.
  3. Ask whether the dasha lords rule or occupy the houses connected with each event.

If most events fit, your birth time and timeline are reliable. If they consistently fit a few months earlier or later, your birth time may need adjusting. This is the basis of birth time rectification.

The shape of a life: common timeline patterns

PatternWhat it looks like
A long benefic dasha in youth (Venus or Jupiter from about 15 to 35)Comfortable education, early marriage or relationships, smooth start
Saturn from about 25 to 45Hard-earned career rise, responsibility early, slow but solid gains
Rahu in the 20s or 30sAmbitious, unconventional or foreign-linked career, rapid changes
Short dashas clustered in mid-life (Sun, Moon, Mars)Many changes of direction in a short span
Ketu around 50 to 60Reassessment, spiritual interest, letting go of old roles

None of these is fate in a fixed sense. They describe the weather of each chapter; how you act within it still matters.

Dasha sandhi on the timeline

Mark the year either side of every mahadasha change. These junctions (dasha sandhi) are often times of transition: a move, a job change, the end of a relationship or the start of a new phase. Knowing them in advance helps you plan big decisions, such as starting a business, for periods when the incoming dasha lord is strong.

Adding transits to the timeline

A timeline shows when a promise is open. Transits (Unit 4) show when it is triggered. For each important antardasha, check where Jupiter and Saturn are moving. When both support the house in question during the right antardasha, the event becomes very likely. Lesson 31 explains this "double transit" method.

Key takeaways

  • A life timeline = balance of the first dasha + each mahadasha's years in order.
  • Judge each dasha lord by its lordship, placement and strength for your Lagna.
  • Mark key antardashas for marriage, career, property, children and travel.
  • Test the timeline on past events to confirm your birth time.

Planning with your timeline

Once your timeline is ready, you can use it practically:

  • Education and career: plan major study or job moves for antardashas of strong 4th, 5th, 9th, 10th or 11th lords.
  • Big financial decisions: prefer periods of strong 2nd and 11th lords, and avoid committing everything during a weak 8th or 12th lord's sub-period.
  • Relationships: marriage windows open in 7th lord and Venus periods; see Lesson 31 for the transit triggers.
  • Health: be extra careful during antardashas of the 6th and 8th lords, especially if they are weak or afflicted, and during dasha sandhi.

Astrology at its best is a planning aid: it helps you choose the right season for each effort.

When the timeline seems wrong

If your past events do not fit the timeline, check in this order:

  1. Birth time: an error of even 30 minutes shifts dates noticeably.
  2. Ayanamsa: make sure the calculation uses Lahiri, the standard in India.
  3. Time zone and daylight saving: births abroad or during war-time daylight saving in India (1942 to 1945) often need correction.
  4. Interpretation: an event may fit through a planet's aspect or a dispositor rather than its own houses.

Example: how one timeline reads as a story

For the Capricorn Lagna example above, a one-paragraph summary might read: "A childhood under Jupiter with learning and some changes of home; a long, self-made rise under Saturn through the twenties and thirties as the Lagna lord builds identity and wealth; a busy, mixed Mercury period of travel, study and work pressure in mid-life; a brief inward turn under Ketu in the mid-fifties; and a rewarding later life under yogakaraka Venus, bringing status and joy through children."

Writing your own timeline as a short story like this is one of the best exercises in the whole course. It forces you to combine everything: dasha order, lengths, balance, house lordship and strength.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Treating the timeline as a fixed script. It shows tendencies and timing, not unchangeable events.
  • Skipping the balance calculation. Starting the first dasha at full length shifts every later date.
  • Judging dashas by the planet's reputation alone. Use house lordship for your Lagna.
  • Ignoring dasha sandhi. The junctions between mahadashas are often the most eventful months.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make my dasha timeline?

Find your Moon's nakshatra and its lord, calculate the balance of that dasha at birth, then add each following mahadasha's years in the Vimshottari order. The free dasha calculator does it instantly.

How accurate is a dasha timeline?

As accurate as the birth time and Moon position. A birth time error of an hour can shift dates by several months, so testing the timeline against past events is important.

Which dasha will I be in at age 30?

Add the balance of your first dasha and each following mahadasha's years until you reach 30. The calculator shows this directly.

Can a dasha timeline predict marriage?

It shows the periods when marriage is most likely, usually during the antardashas of the 7th lord, Venus or planets connected with the 7th house, triggered by Jupiter and Saturn transits.

Do all people experience Saturn mahadasha?

No. With a 120-year cycle, most people live through five to seven mahadashas. Whether Saturn's is among them depends on where your cycle starts.

Can two siblings have very different dasha timelines?

Yes. Even twins born minutes apart can have different balances of dasha, and siblings born years apart usually start in completely different mahadashas.

Which is the most important dasha in a person's life?

Usually the one running during the working years (roughly ages 25 to 55), especially if its lord is a yogakaraka or strong 10th lord. That chapter tends to define career and status.

How far ahead can I plan with a dasha timeline?

As far as you like: the dates of every future mahadasha and antardasha are fixed at birth. Planning becomes most useful when you combine those dates with the slow transits of Jupiter and Saturn.
