How Long Each Vimshottari Dasha Lasts

Lesson 3 of AstroWord's free Vedic astrology course · about 5 minutes · Parashari system, Lahiri ayanamsa

By AstroWord · Updated 4 November 2026 · Based on Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra

In Vimshottari dasha each planet's mahadasha has a fixed length: Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17, adding up to 120 years. Venus has the longest mahadasha and the Sun the shortest. Because a full cycle takes 120 years, nobody experiences every mahadasha in a single lifetime, and the first one is usually only partly lived because you are born part-way through it.

Each graha's mahadasha has a different length. Together they add up to 120 years.

Lesson notes

  • Mahadasha years, part 1: Ketu - 7 Venus - 20 Sun - 6 Moon - 10 Mars - 7
  • Part 2: Rahu - 18 Jupiter - 16 Saturn - 19 Mercury - 17
  • Check the total: 7 + 20 + 6 + 10 + 7 + 18 + 16 + 19 + 17 = 120 years. Few people live through every mahadasha in one life.

Practice questions and answers

Long and short dashas

GroupMahadashasEffect on life
Long (16 years or more)Venus 20, Saturn 19, Rahu 18, Mercury 17, Jupiter 16Define whole decades: education, career, marriage, middle age
Short (10 years or less)Moon 10, Ketu 7, Mars 7, Sun 6Bring quicker changes and transitions

The five long dashas take up 90 of the 120 years, which is why the big chapters of most lives are shaped by Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Mercury or Jupiter.

Why do the lengths differ?

Classical texts give the lengths without a full explanation, and astrologers have proposed several reasons. One view links them to the planets' symbolic "maturity" and influence; another notes that the slow, karmic planets (Saturn, Rahu) and the benefics of lasting value (Venus, Jupiter, Mercury) receive the long periods, while the luminaries and the sharp malefics Mars and Ketu bring short, intense chapters. Whatever the reason, the numbers are fixed and used identically by all Vimshottari astrologers.

Antardasha lengths come from the same numbers

Every mahadasha is divided into nine antardashas in proportion to these same years. The formula is:

Antardasha length (years) = mahadasha years × antardasha planet's years ÷ 120

For example, Venus mahadasha (20 years), Venus antardasha: 20 × 20 ÷ 120 = 3.33 years (3 years 4 months), the longest antardasha in the whole system. Sun mahadasha, Sun antardasha: 6 × 6 ÷ 120 = 0.3 years (about 3 months 18 days), the shortest.

Example: the antardashas of Jupiter mahadasha (16 years)

AntardashaCalculationLength
Jupiter16 × 16 ÷ 1202 years 1 month 18 days
Saturn16 × 19 ÷ 1202 years 6 months 12 days
Mercury16 × 17 ÷ 1202 years 3 months 6 days
Ketu16 × 7 ÷ 12011 months 6 days
Venus16 × 20 ÷ 1202 years 8 months
Sun16 × 6 ÷ 1209 months 18 days
Moon16 × 10 ÷ 1201 year 4 months
Mars16 × 7 ÷ 12011 months 6 days
Rahu16 × 18 ÷ 1202 years 4 months 24 days
Total16 years

(Traditional calculations use a 360-day year with 30-day months; software using the solar year gives slightly different day counts.)

What the lengths mean in practice

  • A 20-year Venus mahadasha in early adulthood often covers education, love, marriage and setting up a home.
  • A 19-year Saturn mahadasha in mid-life often covers steady career building and heavy responsibility.
  • An 18-year Rahu mahadasha can bring major worldly ambition, foreign links and dramatic changes.
  • A 6-year Sun mahadasha is short but can bring a clear burst of recognition or authority.

When you know someone's dasha sequence and lengths, you can sketch the rhythm of their whole life.

Your first dasha is usually shortened

You are rarely born at the very start of a mahadasha. If your Moon was halfway through its nakshatra at birth, half of that mahadasha had already "passed" before you were born, and you only live the remaining half. This remainder is the balance of dasha, explained in Lesson 21.

Worked example

Born with the Moon at the start of Pushya nakshatra (ruled by Saturn), with almost the full 19 years of Saturn remaining:

MahadashaAge range
Saturn0 to 19
Mercury19 to 36
Ketu36 to 43
Venus43 to 63
Sun63 to 69
Moon69 to 79

This person's childhood and teens run under Saturn (discipline, responsibility, perhaps a strict upbringing), their twenties and early thirties under Mercury (education, career, business), and their forties and fifties under Venus (comfort, relationships, enjoyment).

The longest and shortest sub-periods

Because antardasha lengths are products of two planets' years, the extremes are easy to find:

Sub-periodCalculationLength
Venus-Venus20 × 20 ÷ 1203 years 4 months (the longest)
Saturn-Saturn19 × 19 ÷ 1203 years 0 months 3 days
Rahu-Rahu18 × 18 ÷ 1202 years 8 months 12 days
Mercury-Mercury17 × 17 ÷ 1202 years 4 months 27 days
Sun-Moon6 × 10 ÷ 1206 months
Sun-Ketu6 × 7 ÷ 1204 months 6 days
Sun-Sun6 × 6 ÷ 1203 months 18 days (the shortest)

So a whole Sun mahadasha of 6 years runs through all nine antardashas quickly, while a single Venus-Venus sub-period lasts longer than half of the Sun's entire mahadasha.

A shortcut for antardasha lengths in months

There is a handy mental shortcut: antardasha length in months = mahadasha years × antardasha years ÷ 10.

Example: Saturn mahadasha, Mercury antardasha: 19 × 17 ÷ 10 = 32.3 months, about 2 years 8 months 9 days. Moon mahadasha, Mars antardasha: 10 × 7 ÷ 10 = 7 months.

This works because 120 years is 1,440 months, and 1,440 ÷ 120 = 12, so the result in years times 12 equals the product divided by 10.

Pratyantardashas use the same rule

Each antardasha is again split into nine pratyantardashas (third-level periods) in the same proportions:

Pratyantardasha length = antardasha length × planet's years ÷ 120

Inside a 7-month Moon-Mars antardasha, the Mars-Mars pratyantardasha lasts 7 × 7 ÷ 120 = about 0.41 months, roughly 12 days. Astrologers use these short periods to narrow an event down to a few weeks.

How old will you be in each dasha?

A useful exercise is to write ages next to each mahadasha. Start with the balance of your birth dasha (Lesson 21), then add the full years of each mahadasha in order. Across a typical 80-year life you will usually see:

  • One or two long "decade-shaping" dashas in the years from 20 to 60, when career and family are built.
  • A short dasha or two (Sun, Ketu, Mars, Moon) acting as bridges between big chapters.
  • The planet ruling your Moon's nakshatra dominating your earliest years.

Seeing your life laid out this way makes the dasha system feel concrete rather than abstract. The free dasha calculator prints every date for you.

More questions about dasha lengths

How long is Venus mahadasha?

20 years, the longest of all nine.

How long is Ketu mahadasha?

7 years. Ketu's antardashas inside it are short and often bring sudden changes or a spiritual turn.

How long is Jupiter mahadasha?

16 years, divided into nine antardashas from Jupiter-Jupiter (2 years 1 month 18 days) to Jupiter-Rahu (2 years 4 months 24 days).

Do all astrologers use the same dasha lengths?

Yes, for Vimshottari the lengths are standard. Small differences in dates come from the year length used (360 days or the 365.25-day solar year) and from the ayanamsa used to fix the Moon's position.

Seeing the 120 years as a pie

GroupYearsShare
Venus, Saturn, Rahu (18 to 20 years each)5747.5%
Mercury, Jupiter (16 to 17 years each)3327.5%
Moon, Ketu, Mars, Sun (6 to 10 years each)3025%

Nearly half of the whole cycle belongs to just three grahas: Venus, Saturn and Rahu. That is why so many people describe one of these three as the planet that "defined" a decade or two of their life.

Practice

  1. Write the nine mahadasha lengths from memory, in order.
  2. Check that they add to 120.
  3. Calculate three antardashas for your current mahadasha using the months shortcut (mahadasha years × antardasha years ÷ 10).
  4. Compare your answers with the dasha calculator.

Dasha lengths and the stages of life

Because a mahadasha can last up to 20 years, a single dasha can cover an entire stage of life. Astrologers often think in terms of four stages:

StageAgesWhat a long dasha here shapes
Childhood and schooling0 to 18Family environment, health, early education
Early adulthood18 to 35Higher education, first career steps, marriage
Middle life35 to 60Career peak, children, property, responsibility
Later life60 onwardsHealth, wisdom, spirituality, legacy

A strong planet's long dasha falling in early adulthood or middle life is considered especially fortunate, because those are the years when most life-shaping decisions are made. A strong planet whose dasha only arrives after 70 may still give comfort and respect, but its worldly promise has less room to unfold.

Why the numbers matter for rectification

Because the lengths are fixed, a known event date pins down the dasha timeline. If a person married in what should be a Venus-Venus sub-period but the calculation shows Venus-Sun, the birth time may be a little off. Astrologers use these fixed lengths, with several known events, to rectify uncertain birth times.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Mixing up Saturn (19) and Mercury (17), or Rahu (18) and Jupiter (16). Learn them in order: Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17.
  • Assuming a long dasha is better. Length only means duration; quality depends on the planet's strength and houses.
  • Forgetting the balance of dasha. Your first mahadasha is usually only partly lived.
  • Rounding antardashas too roughly. Use the formula for accurate timing.

Frequently asked questions

Which mahadasha is the longest?

Venus, at 20 years. Saturn (19), Rahu (18), Mercury (17) and Jupiter (16) follow.

Which mahadasha is the shortest?

The Sun, at 6 years. Ketu and Mars are 7 years each and the Moon 10.

How long is Rahu mahadasha?

18 years.

How long is Saturn mahadasha?

19 years.

How is antardasha length calculated?

Multiply the mahadasha years by the antardasha planet's years and divide by 120. For example, Saturn-Mercury is 19 × 17 ÷ 120 = 2.69 years (about 2 years 8 months 9 days).

Why does the total equal 120 years?

Vimshottari means 120: the system is built around an ideal full human lifespan of 120 years.

How long is Mercury mahadasha?

17 years.

How long is Sun mahadasha?

6 years, the shortest of all. Its nine antardashas range from about 3½ months (Sun-Sun) to 2 years (Sun-Venus).
