The Vimshottari Dasha Order

Lesson 2 of AstroWord's free Vedic astrology course · about 5 minutes · Parashari system, Lahiri ayanamsa

By AstroWord · Updated 4 November 2026 · Based on Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra

The Vimshottari mahadashas always follow the same fixed order: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, and then back to Ketu. You enter this cycle at a point set by your Moon's nakshatra at birth, and from then on the sequence never changes. A handy way to memorise it is in pairs: Ketu-Venus, Sun-Moon, Mars-Rahu, Jupiter-Saturn, then Mercury closes the circle.

The mahadashas always come in the same fixed order. Learn it once and you can read anyone's timeline.

Lesson notes

  • The order: 1 Ketu 2 Venus 3 Sun 4 Moon 5 Mars 6 Rahu 7 Jupiter 8 Saturn 9 Mercury After Mercury the circle starts again with Ketu.
  • Tip - learn it in pairs: Ketu-Venus, Sun-Moon, Mars-Rahu, Jupiter-Saturn, then Mercury closes the circle.
  • Not everyone starts life in Ketu's mahadasha. You join the circle at a point set by your birth (Lesson 5 shows how). After that, the order never changes.

Practice questions and answers

Which mahadasha comes right after Venus?
Answer: Sun. Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon...
Put the first four mahadashas in order
Answer: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon. Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon.
Put the next four in order
Answer: Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn. Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn.
Which mahadasha comes after Mercury?
Answer: Ketu. Mercury closes the circle, and it starts again with Ketu.
Which mahadasha comes just before Jupiter?

True or false: Everyone starts life in Ketu's mahadasha.
Answer: False. You can be born into any of the nine - but the order after that is always the same.

The order of the mahadashas

PositionMahadashaYearsNakshatras ruled
1Ketu7Ashwini, Magha, Mula
2Venus20Bharani, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha
3Sun6Krittika, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha
4Moon10Rohini, Hasta, Shravana
5Mars7Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishta
6Rahu18Ardra, Swati, Shatabhisha
7Jupiter16Punarvasu, Vishakha, Purva Bhadrapada
8Saturn19Pushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada
9Mercury17Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Revati

After Mercury, the cycle returns to Ketu and repeats. The order matches the order of the nakshatra lords, starting from Ashwini, the first nakshatra.

Why is the order not the weekday order?

The weekday order (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn) comes from the planetary hours. The Vimshottari order comes from the nakshatras: the 27 lunar mansions are assigned to the nine grahas in a repeating sequence that starts with Ketu ruling Ashwini. Because the Moon moves through the nakshatras in order, the dashas follow the same order.

That is the deep logic of Vimshottari: the Moon's journey through the stars at birth sets the clock of your whole life.

Memory tricks

  • Pairs: Ketu-Venus, Sun-Moon, Mars-Rahu, Jupiter-Saturn, Mercury.
  • Sentence: "Kind Ventures Seem Most Magical, Rarely Joyless, Seldom Mean" (Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury).
  • Story: detachment (Ketu) opens to love (Venus), which brings status (Sun) and comfort (Moon), then action (Mars) and ambition (Rahu), then wisdom (Jupiter), work (Saturn) and finally skill (Mercury).

Choose whichever sticks; you will use the order every time you read a dasha.

You join the cycle part-way

Nobody starts life at "position 1" by default. Your first mahadasha is the lord of your Moon's nakshatra. Someone with the Moon in Rohini starts in the Moon's mahadasha; someone with the Moon in Swati starts in Rahu's.

From there the order continues as normal. For a person born in the Moon's mahadasha, the sequence of life is Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus, Sun.

Starting mahadashaSequence that follows
KetuVenus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury
VenusSun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu
SunMoon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus
MoonMars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus, Sun
MarsRahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon
RahuJupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars
JupiterSaturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu
SaturnMercury, Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter
MercuryKetu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn

Which dashas will you live through?

Because the full cycle is 120 years, most people experience five to seven mahadashas in a lifetime. Which ones depends on where you start. Someone starting in Saturn (19 years) with most of it remaining will spend childhood and youth in Saturn and Mercury, while someone starting in the Sun (6 years) passes quickly into the Moon and Mars.

This explains a lot: some people's childhoods are dominated by a single long period (Venus's 20 years), while others change chapters every few years (Ketu, Sun, Moon, Mars).

The same order inside every mahadasha

The antardashas (sub-periods) inside each mahadasha follow the same order, starting with the mahadasha lord itself. Inside Jupiter's mahadasha the antardashas run Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu. Lesson 22 covers this.

Worked example

Riya was born with the Moon in Hasta nakshatra. Hasta is ruled by the Moon, so her first mahadasha is the Moon. Her life sequence is: Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu and so on.

If she has 4 years of Moon dasha left at birth, her timeline begins: Moon (age 0 to 4), Mars (4 to 11), Rahu (11 to 29), Jupiter (29 to 45), Saturn (45 to 64). Lesson 24 shows how to build such a timeline.

How the order connects to the 27 nakshatras

The nine dasha lords rule the 27 nakshatras in three rounds. Ashwini (Ketu) to Ashlesha (Mercury) is the first round, Magha (Ketu) to Jyeshtha (Mercury) the second, and Mula (Ketu) to Revati (Mercury) the third. Each round covers 120 degrees of the zodiac, exactly one third of the circle.

RoundNakshatrasZodiac span
1Ashwini to Ashlesha0° Aries to 30° Cancer
2Magha to Jyeshtha0° Leo to 30° Scorpio
3Mula to Revati0° Sagittarius to 30° Pisces

This is why every round begins in a fire sign (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) with a Ketu nakshatra (Ashwini, Magha, Mula), and ends in a water sign (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) with a Mercury nakshatra (Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Revati). These water-to-fire junctions are the gandanta points, considered sensitive in Vedic astrology. A Moon at a gandanta point means a birth right at the change from Mercury's to Ketu's dasha.

Reading the sequence as a life story

Because the order is fixed, you can read your dasha sequence like the chapters of a book. A few common patterns:

  • Rahu followed by Jupiter: after 18 years of ambition and restlessness, Jupiter's 16 years often bring stability, wisdom and family growth.
  • Jupiter followed by Saturn: expansion gives way to consolidation; what was started in Jupiter has to be built properly in Saturn.
  • Mercury followed by Ketu: busy years of learning and trade end in a short, inward period that can bring a change of path.
  • Ketu followed by Venus: after detachment comes a long period of comfort, love and enjoyment.
  • Venus followed by the Sun: pleasure gives way to purpose and recognition.

These are tendencies, not guarantees. The actual results depend on the strength and houses of each planet in your chart.

Dasha sandhi: the junction between periods

The months around a change of mahadasha are called dasha sandhi. One planet's chapter closes while the next is opening, and life often feels unsettled. Many astrologers treat the last few months of a mahadasha and the first few of the next as a time to avoid big irreversible decisions unless both dasha lords support them. When you know your sequence, you can see your sandhi periods years in advance with the dasha calculator.

Practice: write out your own sequence

  1. Find your Moon's nakshatra with the nakshatra calculator.
  2. Look up its lord in the first table above. That is your birth mahadasha.
  3. Write the next eight mahadashas in order.
  4. Add the years beside each one from Lesson 19.

You now have the skeleton of your life timeline. Lesson 21 shows how to work out exactly how much of the first dasha was left at birth.

More questions about the dasha order

Why do Rahu and Ketu have dashas if they are not planets?

In Vedic astrology Rahu and Ketu are grahas (shadow planets, the lunar nodes). Each rules three nakshatras, so each gets a mahadasha: Rahu 18 years and Ketu 7.

Is the dasha order the same in Yogini or Chara dasha?

No. Each dasha system has its own order. Yogini dasha follows eight yoginis linked to planets, and Chara dasha moves through signs. The order in this lesson applies only to Vimshottari.

What comes after Mercury mahadasha?

Ketu mahadasha, for 7 years, followed by Venus.

The order inside every level

The same sequence repeats at every level of the system, which makes Vimshottari easy to compute once you know the order:

LevelStarts withThen follows
MahadashaLord of the Moon's nakshatraThe fixed order
AntardashaThe mahadasha lordThe fixed order
PratyantardashaThe antardasha lordThe fixed order

So in Saturn mahadasha, Mercury antardasha, the first pratyantardasha is Mercury's, followed by Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter and Saturn.

How long until each dasha comes round?

Because the full cycle is 120 years, a mahadasha never repeats within a normal lifetime. Your birth mahadasha would only return 120 years later. That is why each mahadasha is a once-in-a-lifetime chapter, and why astrologers pay close attention to the one you are in now and the one coming next.

Quick self-test

Without looking at the tables, answer these:

  1. Which mahadasha comes after Rahu? (Jupiter.)
  2. Which comes before the Sun? (Venus.)
  3. If you were born in Mars dasha, which is your fourth mahadasha? (Saturn: Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn.)
  4. Which three nakshatras start Saturn's mahadasha? (Pushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada.)

If you got all four, you know the order well enough to read any dasha chart.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Starting everyone at Ketu. The first mahadasha depends on the Moon's nakshatra.
  • Using the weekday order. The Vimshottari order is different and must be memorised separately.
  • Skipping Rahu and Ketu. They are part of the order and run 18 and 7 years.
  • Forgetting the cycle wraps. After Mercury comes Ketu again.

Frequently asked questions

What is the order of Vimshottari mahadashas?

Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, then back to Ketu.

Why does Vimshottari start with Ketu?

Ketu rules Ashwini, the first of the 27 nakshatras, so the sequence of nakshatra lords, and therefore of dashas, begins with Ketu.

Does everyone start life in the same dasha?

No. Your first mahadasha is the lord of the nakshatra your Moon was in at birth.

How many mahadashas does a person experience?

Usually five to seven, because the full cycle is 120 years and few people live that long.

Where can I see my dasha sequence?

Use the free dasha calculator, which shows every mahadasha and antardasha with dates.

How do I remember the Vimshottari order easily?

Learn it in pairs: Ketu-Venus, Sun-Moon, Mars-Rahu, Jupiter-Saturn, then Mercury. Or use the sentence "Kind Ventures Seem Most Magical, Rarely Joyless, Seldom Mean".

Does the order ever change between astrologers?

No. Every astrologer using Vimshottari dasha uses the same order. Differences in dates come from ayanamsa and birth time, not from the sequence.
