How to Judge a Planet's Strength

Lesson 8 of AstroWord's free Vedic astrology course · about 5 minutes · Parashari system, Lahiri ayanamsa

By AstroWord · Updated 4 November 2026 · Based on Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra

A planet's strength in Vedic astrology depends first on the sign it occupies, ranked from strongest to weakest as: exalted, moolatrikona, own sign, great friend's sign, friend's sign, neutral sign, enemy's sign, great enemy's sign and debilitated. Astrologers then refine this with directional strength (dig bala), combustion, retrograde motion, the planet's position in the D9 Navamsa and the full six-fold Shadbala calculation. A strong planet delivers its significations and its houses clearly; a weak one struggles.

Put it all together: a graha's strength depends a lot on the sign it sits in.

Lesson notes

  • From strongest to weakest: 1. Exalted 2. Own sign 3. Friend's sign 4. Neutral sign 5. Enemy's sign 6. Debilitated
  • To rate a graha, ask who rules the sign it sits in. Example: Mars in Leo - the Sun rules Leo, and the Sun is Mars's friend - so Mars is in a friend's sign.

Practice questions and answers

Put these from strongest to weakest
Answer: Exalted, Own sign, Enemy's sign, Debilitated. Exalted, own sign, enemy's sign, debilitated.
Venus is in Leo. The Sun rules Leo and is Venus's enemy. What is Venus's condition?
Answer: Enemy's sign. The Sun is Venus's enemy, so Leo is an enemy's sign for Venus.
Saturn is in Taurus. Venus rules Taurus. What is Saturn's condition?
Answer: Friend's sign. Venus is Saturn's friend.
Jupiter is in Sagittarius. What is its condition?
Answer: Own sign. Jupiter rules Sagittarius.
The Moon is in Taurus. What is its condition?
Answer: Exalted. The Moon is exalted in Taurus.
True or false: A debilitated graha is weaker than one in an enemy's sign.
Answer: True. Debilitated is the weakest of all.

Why planetary strength matters

Two charts can have the same planet in the same house and still produce very different lives. The difference is usually strength. A strong 10th lord gives a smooth career; a weak one gives the same career themes with more struggle.

Strength also decides timing. When a strong planet's dasha runs, its houses flourish; when a weak planet's dasha runs, its houses are tested.

The dignity scale (sthana bala in simple form)

RankDignityWhat it meansExample
1Exalted (uchcha)Peak strength, best resultsJupiter in Cancer
2MoolatrikonaWorking in its office, very strongSun in Leo 0° to 20°
3Own sign (swakshetra)At home, confidentMars in Scorpio
4Great friend's sign (adhi mitra)Very comfortable (compound friendship)Varies by chart
5Friend's sign (mitra)ComfortableMars in Leo
6Neutral sign (sama)AverageMars in Libra
7Enemy's sign (shatru)Uncomfortable, holds backMars in Gemini
8Great enemy's sign (adhi shatru)Very uncomfortableVaries by chart
9Debilitated (neecha)WeakestMars in Cancer

For everyday reading you can use a simpler six-step version: exalted, own sign, friend, neutral, enemy, debilitated. Lessons 13 to 15 gave you every piece you need to place any planet on this scale.

How to rate a planet in three questions

  1. Is it exalted or debilitated? If yes, that decides most of the answer.
  2. If not, who rules the sign it sits in? Find the sign lord (Lesson 3).
  3. How does the planet feel about that lord? Use the friendship table (Lesson 15).

Example: Saturn in Gemini. Not exalted or debilitated. Gemini's lord is Mercury. Saturn's row: Mercury is a friend. So Saturn is in a friend's sign: reasonably strong.

Directional strength (dig bala)

Each planet also gains strength in one particular house, its direction of power:

House (direction)Planets with full directional strength
1st (east)Mercury, Jupiter
4th (north)Moon, Venus
7th (west)Saturn
10th (south)Sun, Mars

A planet with dig bala gives strong results for its house even if its sign is ordinary. The opposite house is where it has no directional strength: the Sun in the 4th or Saturn in the 1st, for example. Saturn in the 7th (its dig bala) is one reason Saturn there can give stable, long marriages despite delays.

Combustion (asta)

A planet very close to the Sun is said to be combust: its light is swallowed by the Sun's glare and its significations weaken or become dominated by ego (the Sun). Commonly used combustion distances:

PlanetCombust within (approximately)
Moon12° of the Sun
Mars17°
Mercury14° (12° when retrograde)
Jupiter11°
Venus10° (8° when retrograde)
Saturn15°

Rahu and Ketu are never combust. Many astrologers treat Mercury's combustion lightly, because Mercury is so often near the Sun.

Retrograde strength (cheshta bala)

Retrograde planets are closest to the Earth and appear brightest, so classical strength calculations give them high motional strength (cheshta bala). In practice a retrograde planet is intense and internal: it revisits its themes, often delivering results after reworking or delay. Lesson 27 covers retrograde planets in detail.

Navamsa strength and vargottama

The D9 Navamsa shows a planet's inner strength. A planet that is strong in both D1 and D9 is reliable; one that is strong in D1 but debilitated in D9 can disappoint later in life.

A planet in the same sign in D1 and D9 is called vargottama and is considered strong, almost like being in its own sign. See the vargottama guide and view your D9 with the D9 chart calculator.

Shadbala: the six-fold strength

Classical astrology combines all these factors into Shadbala, six sources of strength:

BalaWhat it measures
Sthana balaPositional strength: sign dignity, D9 and other vargas
Dig balaDirectional strength (above)
Kala balaTemporal strength: day or night birth, lunar phase, year, month, day and hour lords
Cheshta balaMotional strength: retrogression and speed
Naisargika balaNatural strength, fixed for each planet (Sun strongest, Saturn weakest)
Drik balaAspectual strength: benefic and malefic aspects received

The result is measured in units called rupas, and each planet has a minimum required. A planet above its minimum is considered strong enough to deliver. You can calculate your full Shadbala with the free Shadbala calculator and read why a planet can still be weak.

Avasthas: the age of a planet

Another classical layer is the baladi avastha, which divides each sign into five 6° segments and gives the planet an "age": infant, youth, adult, old or dead. In odd signs the order runs from infant (0° to 6°) to dead (24° to 30°); in even signs it reverses. An adult planet (12° to 18°) gives full results; an infant or dead planet gives weaker ones. It is a useful refinement once you are comfortable with dignity.

Worked example: rating four planets

Chart with a Libra Lagna:

PlanetSignDignityExtra factorsVerdict
SaturnLibra (house 1)ExaltedYogakaraka for Libra; no dig bala in the 1stVery strong
SunLibra (house 1)DebilitatedCombines with exalted Saturn (enemies)Weak, tense
MoonTaurus (house 8)ExaltedBright? check phase; in a dusthanaStrong but in a hidden house
JupiterSagittarius (house 3)Own signRules the 3rd and 6th for LibraStrong but functionally mixed

Even this quick table already says a lot: a disciplined, hard-working person (exalted yogakaraka Saturn in the Lagna) who may struggle with confidence or authority figures (debilitated Sun).

Strong vs weak: what each planet looks like

PlanetWhen strongWhen weak
SunConfidence, leadership, good health, respectLow self-esteem, trouble with authority, low vitality
MoonEmotional balance, popularity, contentmentAnxiety, mood swings, restlessness
MarsCourage, stamina, decisive actionAnger or timidity, accidents, sibling or property issues
MercurySharp intellect, clear speech, business senseNervousness, poor concentration, communication trouble
JupiterWisdom, faith, children, wealth, protectionPoor judgement, delayed children, lack of guidance
VenusLove, beauty, comfort, artistic talentRelationship troubles, lack of comfort, over-indulgence
SaturnDiscipline, endurance, lasting successDelays, fear, depression, chronic problems

Use this table together with the houses each planet rules for your Lagna: a weak 10th lord shows up as career strain, a weak 4th lord as unsettled home life, and so on.

Practice: build a strength table for your chart

Make a table with these columns for all seven visible planets:

  1. Sign and dignity (exalted, own, friend, neutral, enemy, debilitated).
  2. House, and whether it has directional strength there.
  3. Combust? (Within the distances above.)
  4. Retrograde?
  5. D9 sign and dignity.

Count the strengths and weaknesses. The two or three strongest planets usually describe your biggest talents, and the weakest one or two point to the areas that need the most patience. Then check which of them run as mahadashas in your life with the dasha calculator.

Key takeaways

  • Sign dignity is the first and biggest factor: exalted, moolatrikona, own, friend, neutral, enemy, debilitated.
  • Directional strength, combustion, retrogression and D9 position refine the picture.
  • Shadbala combines six kinds of strength into one classical measure.
  • A strong planet makes its houses strong, whether those houses are pleasant or difficult.

Does a strong planet always give good results?

It gives strong results for the houses it rules and occupies. If those include the 6th, 8th or 12th, the strength also intensifies those matters, so read house lordship alongside strength.

Can a weak planet be fixed with remedies?

Traditional remedies (mantras, charity, fasting on the planet's day and living in line with its qualities) are believed to support a weak planet. Gemstones are more powerful and should only be worn on an experienced astrologer's advice, especially if the planet rules difficult houses.

Which planet is the strongest in a chart?

The one with the best combination of dignity, directional strength, D9 position and Shadbala. Astrologers often call the strongest planet the chart's "leader" and expect its dasha to be one of the most eventful in life.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Judging strength by house alone. Sign dignity comes first.
  • Ignoring combustion. A planet hidden by the Sun can underperform even in a good sign.
  • Treating strength as goodness. A strong planet ruling the 8th or 12th makes those houses' matters strong too.
  • Skipping the D9. Inner strength often explains why a promising planet disappoints or a weak one surprises.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a planet is strong in my chart?

Check its sign first (exalted, own, friend, neutral, enemy or debilitated), then its house (directional strength), combustion, retrogression and its D9 position. The Shadbala calculator combines these into one score.

Which is stronger: own sign or exaltation?

Exaltation is stronger. The full order is exalted, moolatrikona, own sign, then friend's, neutral, enemy's and debilitated signs.

What is dig bala?

Directional strength: Mercury and Jupiter are strongest in the 1st house, the Moon and Venus in the 4th, Saturn in the 7th, and the Sun and Mars in the 10th.

What is a combust planet?

A planet too close to the Sun, whose significations are weakened or overpowered. For example, Venus within about 10 degrees of the Sun is combust.

Is a retrograde planet strong or weak?

Classically it has high motional strength, so it is considered powerful, but it acts in an internal, repeated or delayed way.

What is Shadbala?

The classical six-fold strength of a planet: positional, directional, temporal, motional, natural and aspectual strength, measured in rupas.

Can a planet be strong and still give bad results?

Yes. Strength means the planet delivers its houses' results fully. If it rules the 6th, 8th or 12th, those difficult results can also come strongly, so always read strength together with lordship.
