Upapada Lagna (UL) is the Arudha of the 12th house. The 12th house in Vedic astrology represents bed pleasures, foreign lands, and — most importantly — loss. The Arudha of this house becomes the manifestation point of what you 'lose' yourself in: your most intimate bond. In Jaimini astrology, this is the primary indicator for the quality and character of your marriage and your spouse.

Count 12 signs forward from your Lagna sign.
✦ 2. Identify the lord of that sign
Each zodiac sign has a ruling planet. Find the lord of your 12th house sign.

Count how many signs from the 12th house to where its lord is placed in your chart.
✦ 4. Count the same distance forward from the lord
Starting from the lord's sign, count the same number of signs forward. That sign is your Upapada Lagna.
There is one important exception in the Jaimini system: if the lord of the 12th house is placed in the 12th house itself, the Upapada Lagna cannot fall on the same sign or the 7th sign from it. In this case, count 10 houses forward from that position. This exception rule is what most manual calculations get wrong — AstroWord's calculator applies it automatically.
