Sign Lords: Which Planet Rules Each Rashi

Lesson 3 of AstroWord's free Vedic astrology course · about 5 minutes · Parashari system, Lahiri ayanamsa

By AstroWord · Updated 5 November 2026 · Based on Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra

In Vedic astrology each of the 12 signs is ruled by one planet: Mars rules Aries and Scorpio; Venus rules Taurus and Libra; Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo; the Moon rules Cancer; the Sun rules Leo; Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces; Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius. The ruler is called the sign lord (rashi swami). Rahu and Ketu rule no sign in the classical Parashari system. Knowing sign lords is essential because it is how you find house lords, judge planetary strength and read dashas.

Every sign has a lord - the planet that owns it. Let's learn who owns what.

Lesson notes

  • The Sun rules just one sign: Leo. The Moon rules just one sign: Cancer. Mars rules two signs: Aries and Scorpio.
  • Four more planets rule two signs each: Venus - Taurus and Libra Mercury - Gemini and Virgo Jupiter - Sagittarius and Pisces Saturn - Capricorn and Aquarius
  • Memory trick: start from Cancer and Leo (Moon and Sun) and walk outwards both ways. Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo, Venus rules Taurus and Libra, Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, Jupiter rules Pisces and Sagittarius, Saturn rules Aquarius and Capricorn.
  • That's all 12 signs shared between seven planets. Rahu and Ketu own no sign in the classical Parashari system.

Practice questions and answers

Which planet rules Leo?
Answer: Sun. The Sun (Surya) is Leo's lord. Leo is the only sign the Sun rules.
Which planet rules Cancer?
Answer: Moon. The Sun and Moon rule one sign each.
True or false: Mars rules two signs.
Answer: True. Mars rules Aries and Scorpio.
Match each sign to its ruler
Answer: Aries = Mars; Taurus = Venus; Gemini = Mercury; Cancer = Moon. Mars rules Aries, Venus rules Taurus, Mercury rules Gemini and the Moon rules Cancer.
Match each sign to its ruler
Answer: Virgo = Mercury; Libra = Venus; Scorpio = Mars; Sagittarius = Jupiter. Spot the repeats? Mercury, Venus and Mars each rule two signs.
Which planet rules both Capricorn and Aquarius?
Answer: Saturn. Shani owns signs 10 and 11.
Jupiter rules Sagittarius and ___.
Answer: Pisces. Jupiter owns signs 9 and 12.
Venus rules Taurus and ___.
Answer: Libra. Venus owns signs 2 and 7.
Which planet owns the signs on both sides of Cancer and Leo?
Answer: Mercury. Gemini and Virgo sit either side of Cancer and Leo.
True or false: Rahu and Ketu own a sign of their own in this system.
Answer: False. In the classical Parashari system they own no sign.

What is a sign lord?

Every sign has an owner, a planet that is "at home" there and is responsible for everything that happens in that sign. This owner is called the sign lord, rashi swami or rashi adhipati.

Think of the signs as twelve houses on a street and the planets as landlords. Seven landlords own the twelve houses between them, so five of them own two houses each.

The easiest way to memorise sign lords

Start in the middle of the zodiac, at Cancer and Leo, which belong to the Moon and the Sun. Then walk outwards in both directions, giving each next pair of signs to the next planet in order of distance from the Sun:

PlanetSign on the Leo sideSign on the Cancer side
Sun / MoonLeoCancer
MercuryVirgoGemini
VenusLibraTaurus
MarsScorpioAries
JupiterSagittariusPisces
SaturnCapricornAquarius

Mercury is closest to the Sun, so it gets the two signs next to Cancer and Leo. Saturn is furthest away, so it gets the two signs furthest from them. This mirror pattern is ancient and makes the whole table easy to rebuild from memory.

Each planet's two signs feel different

The five planets that own two signs express themselves differently in each one, because the elements differ:

  • Mars: Aries is fiery and direct (open courage); Scorpio is watery and hidden (secret strength, research, intensity).
  • Venus: Taurus is earthy (comfort, money, food, possessions); Libra is airy (relationships, balance, social grace).
  • Mercury: Gemini is airy (talk, communication, curiosity); Virgo is earthy (analysis, detail, service).
  • Jupiter: Sagittarius is fiery (teaching, religion, philosophy); Pisces is watery (compassion, spirituality, imagination).
  • Saturn: Capricorn is earthy (work, structure, ambition); Aquarius is airy (society, groups, ideas, reform).

Moolatrikona: a planet's office

Besides its own signs, each planet has a moolatrikona sign, a portion of one of its signs where it works most officially and effectively. Parashara gives these ranges:

PlanetMoolatrikona sign and degrees
SunLeo 0° to 20°
MoonTaurus 3° to 30°
MarsAries 0° to 12°
MercuryVirgo 15° to 20°
JupiterSagittarius 0° to 10°
VenusLibra 0° to 15°
SaturnAquarius 0° to 20°

If a planet is in its own sign it is at home; if it is in its moolatrikona it is at home and at work. Both are strong placements. You will meet the full strength scale in Lesson 16.

What about Rahu and Ketu?

In the classical Parashari system taught in this course, Rahu and Ketu own no sign. Some later texts and some astrologers assign them co-rulership (for example Rahu with Aquarius and Ketu with Scorpio), and some give them "exaltation" signs, but these views differ between schools.

Because Rahu and Ketu own nothing, they act like their dispositor: the lord of the sign they sit in. Rahu in Taurus, for example, behaves partly like Venus, the lord of Taurus.

Why sign lords matter so much

Sign lords are used in almost every technique you will learn later:

  1. House lords: the lord of the sign on a house rules that house (Lesson 8).
  2. Strength: a planet in a friend's sign does better than one in an enemy's sign, and you find out whose sign it is from the sign lord (Lessons 15 and 16).
  3. Dispositors: a planet's results depend partly on the condition of the lord of the sign it occupies.
  4. Dashas: when a planet's dasha runs, it delivers the houses it owns (Lesson 23).
  5. Yogas: combinations such as Raja Yoga are built from the lords of good houses. See the Raja Yoga calculator.

Worked example: finding a dispositor

Suppose your Moon is in Sagittarius. The lord of Sagittarius is Jupiter, so Jupiter is the dispositor of your Moon.

If Jupiter is strong (for example in Cancer, where it is exalted), your Moon is supported: the mind tends to be optimistic and guided by good values. If Jupiter is weak, the Moon has less support. This is one of the first checks a Vedic astrologer makes.

Sign lords and the 12 houses: a preview

Because each house of your chart holds one sign, each house also has a lord. With an Aries Lagna:

HouseSignHouse lord
1AriesMars
2TaurusVenus
3GeminiMercury
4CancerMoon
5LeoSun
6VirgoMercury
7LibraVenus
8ScorpioMars
9SagittariusJupiter
10CapricornSaturn
11AquariusSaturn
12PiscesJupiter

Notice that Mars rules both house 1 and house 8 here, Venus rules 2 and 7, and so on. For every Lagna the pattern of house lords is different, which is a big reason two people with the same planets in the same signs can have very different lives.

Planets in their own signs

When a planet sits in a sign it rules, it is in its own sign (swakshetra). It behaves confidently, like a person in their own home: it can act freely and protect the matters of that house.

Examples of own-sign placements:

  • The Sun in Leo: strong self-belief, natural authority.
  • The Moon in Cancer: emotional depth, care for family.
  • Mars in Aries or Scorpio: courage and stamina.
  • Jupiter in Sagittarius or Pisces: wisdom, faith, good judgement.
  • Saturn in Capricorn or Aquarius: patience, endurance, organisational skill.

Five planets in their own signs or exaltation in a kendra form Panch Mahapurusha Yogas, a famous family of strong combinations described in our Panch Mahapurusha Yoga guide.

Key takeaways

  • Seven planets share the twelve signs: the Sun and Moon own one each, the others own two.
  • Memorise the lords by walking outwards from Cancer (Moon) and Leo (Sun).
  • Rahu and Ketu own no sign in the Parashari system and act like the lord of the sign they occupy.
  • Sign lords are the key to house lords, planetary strength, dispositors and dashas.

Sign lords in action: three quick readings

Sign lords let you read placements more deeply with very little extra effort:

  • Venus in Leo: Venus sits in the Sun's sign. The Sun is an enemy of Venus, so Venus feels a little uncomfortable: love and beauty are expressed proudly and dramatically, sometimes with ego clashes in relationships.
  • Moon in Capricorn: the Moon sits in Saturn's sign. Saturn is neutral to the Moon but cool and serious, so feelings are controlled and practical; the person may find it hard to show emotion but is deeply dependable.
  • Jupiter in Gemini: Jupiter sits in Mercury's sign. Jupiter treats Mercury as an enemy, so wisdom is spread thin across many ideas; a great communicator and teacher, but one who should guard against overthinking.

In each case you simply asked: whose sign is this, and how does the planet feel about that owner? That question becomes second nature with practice.

A short history of sign rulership

The sign-lord scheme is one of the oldest parts of astrology, shared by the Indian and Hellenistic traditions. Parashara's Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Varahamihira's Brihat Jataka both list the same seven rulers used here. The symmetry around Cancer and Leo, with the planets taking signs in order of their speed and distance, is what made the scheme easy to teach and remember for over two thousand years.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Giving Rahu and Ketu signs in a Parashari reading. Stick to the seven classical lords unless you are deliberately following another school.
  • Forgetting that Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn rule two signs. This is why one planet can rule two houses at once.
  • Using Western rulerships. Western astrology often gives Scorpio to Pluto, Aquarius to Uranus and Pisces to Neptune. Vedic astrology keeps the traditional lords.
  • Confusing own sign with exaltation. Mars owns Aries but is exalted in Capricorn. Only Mercury is exalted in a sign it owns (Virgo).

Frequently asked questions

Which planet rules which zodiac sign in Vedic astrology?

Aries and Scorpio: Mars. Taurus and Libra: Venus. Gemini and Virgo: Mercury. Cancer: Moon. Leo: Sun. Sagittarius and Pisces: Jupiter. Capricorn and Aquarius: Saturn.

Which planets rule only one sign?

The Sun rules only Leo and the Moon rules only Cancer. Every other classical planet rules two signs.

Does Rahu or Ketu rule any sign?

Not in the classical Parashari system. Some later traditions assign them co-rulership of Aquarius and Scorpio, but this course follows Parashara, where they own no sign.

What is my rashi lord?

Your rashi lord is the planet that rules your Moon sign. If your Moon is in Virgo, Mercury is your rashi lord. Find your Moon sign with the Moon sign calculator.

What is a dispositor in astrology?

The dispositor of a planet is the lord of the sign it occupies. A planet in Gemini is disposited by Mercury, so Mercury's condition affects how well that planet can deliver its results.
