Most people know their solar birthday. But in Vedic astrology, there is a deeper birthday — your Janma Tithi, the lunar day on which you were born. Your birth Tithi is determined by the angular relationship between the Sun and Moon at birth. It reveals your emotional nature, relationships, karma, and spiritual path in ways that planetary positions alone cannot.
A Tithi is one lunar day — the time it takes for the Moon to move exactly 12° away from the Sun. There are 30 Tithis in a lunar month: 15 in Shukla Paksha (waxing Moon, 1-15) and 15 in Krishna Paksha (waning Moon, 1-15). Since the Moon's speed varies, a Tithi can last 19 to 26 solar hours — sometimes two Tithis fall in one day, sometimes one Tithi spans two days. This is why your birth time matters for Tithi calculation.
✦ Nanda (1, 6, 11)
Joy, new beginnings, creativity — these natives are enthusiastic starters
✦ Bhadra (2, 7, 12)
Stability, foundation, journey — these natives build lasting structures
✦ Jaya (3, 8, 13)
Victory, competition, overcoming — these natives are fighters and achievers
✦ Rikta (4, 9, 14)
Introspective, intense, releasing — these natives process deeply before acting
✦ Purna (5, 10, 15/30)
Complete, abundant, spiritual — these natives carry a sense of wholeness
Born in Shukla Paksha (waxing Moon, Tithis 1-15): outward energy, visible in the world, expressive, building phase karma. Born in Krishna Paksha (waning Moon, Tithis 16-30): inward energy, reflective, depth-seeking, releasing phase karma. Neither is better — they are different orientations of the soul.
In Vedic tradition, the Tithi is governed by Venus and the water element — both connected to relationships and emotions. Your birth Tithi reveals how you relate to others: your giving and receiving patterns, emotional needs in partnership, and even the karma you carry from past relationships into this life.
Each Tithi has a ruling deity and planet. These govern the nature of the day's energy and the native's spiritual inclinations. For example: Pratipada (1st Tithi) is ruled by Agni (fire), Panchami (5th) by Naga (serpent wisdom), Ekadashi (11th) by Vishnu — fasting on your Janma Tithi's ruling day deepens the spiritual benefit.
In classical Vedic tradition, your birthday is celebrated when the Tithi returns — not when the solar date returns. This is called Tithi Pravesha, your true Vedic new year. Many traditional families still celebrate it this way. Knowing your birth Tithi reconnects you to this ancient rhythm. You can also track the current Tithi in your daily horoscope.
